Mobile games did not evolve as I thought they would...

Discussion in 'General Game Discussion and Questions' started by Primoz, Nov 6, 2013.

  1. Yeah, well definitely the what should be illegal, bait and switching to freemium and all of the early adopter blues in one week are all terrrible.

But I think it's just a trend, something will change, even now, the market is changing, more and more people are waiting for frees, and not buying anything, which doesn't help devs either.

All freemiums with ads aren't the way to go to sustain people's interest in games.

Hopefully that won't be the reality of ios gaming, I hope it is just a trend for now.

That's exactly what I lost faith into. It's not just the current trend, nothing will change. The only way that this would change is if people would start boycotting certain games from certain developers but that, of course, won't happen. Or maybe if that company would have received the patent rights on IAPs.

Honestly though, IAP is not the reason why I'm leaving, on the contrary, I think that people who say "IAP? I'm not downloading that!" are very, very wrong.

It's the other consequences that the market has on developers. The market forces the devs to focus on:
    1. Marketing
    2. Monetization
    3. Graphics
    4-99. ???
    100. Gameplay?

You must accept that this is not just a trend, Connector. This is the present and future of gaming (on all platforms).

Maybe I'm going "oldschool" because I want to escape The Era of Angry birds, Minecraft and LoL. I don't know...

I feel one way to beat freemium is to simply buy games ASAP. The reason there is all this freemium and other rubbish is that devs simply have to survive and make money. Freemium makes money (kids seem to think these games are free yet buy lots of IAPS? But they moan if a games $3. Doesnt make sense)

Seen it so often. A dev team spends 9 months on a game and then it releases and downloads are poor. So then it's freemium

Way too many people wait for price drops or games to go free. There's 1000s accounts who simply seem to go for promo codes

Games are sooooo cheap at 1 or 2 dollars. Just buy to help the devs or it'll be more and more freemium. The ios crowd are tough as anything lately. Eg moaning that a premium game might 'only' have 11 hours of gameplay etc? Just ridiculous

I really envy you for still being capable of believing, that we can get rid of F2P games.

Do you know that people who complain about those games are in minority? Hardly anyone complains about F2P on non-hardcore gaming forums, and you must accept the fact that "casual" is the word that makes developers rich these days. Nothing is going to change, atleast not for the better.

As said before though, IAPs themselves are not responsible for the quality of games these days. It's the other consequences the market brings.

I sincerely hope that this belief, that F2P is just a trend, isn't the only thing keeping you on this platform.

Yep like you say we might be the minority. But I still love ios gaming. I mean some of my favourites such as Doom, Duke nukem, Sonic for example (and that's just a few. I have hundreds of favourites) Having them all one device is great. I have a folder for 1970s style games. 80s and 90s. So many favourites

I've got 600 games on my iPod. So if every game released will be a dread freemium runner from now on I still have 100s of games I can be playing for many years

The amount of great games I have outweigh any bad freemium ones

You're not alone, not sure if I'd go back for nostalgia but I can relate to the reasoning. There are some great games on iOS but it's such a minefield and most of the offerings are designed the wrong way up now (your 1-100 brief pretty much says it all). Have fun and good luck.

Yeah I can slightly see his way of thinking but I think its a bit of a waste (specially as he's coming back to ios gaming in the future with a new device!)

There's just too many good games for me. The good outweighs the bad

It's more to do with greed. What nonsense they talk about needing to survive? I know the iOS market can be competitive.. but if devs focus on making a decent game.. it will get recognised with some small marketing. Every dev wants to make thousands or millions....pure greed..they don't need to.. just make a solid game and the downloads will surely come.. over time.

Well, that's not set in stone. It will certainly take more than just Exiles and Shadow sun for me to come back to iOS.

    This...

Nonetheless, this is Primoz's view on things and how he's adjusting to the reality of things iOS. And that reality is that 90% of iOS games is crap.

And i quoted psj on his post above, coz that 10% for me is already too many, and i cant even play them all as fast as i buy them.

The only thing threatening the 10% or apps or less is app updates, which can potentially destroy the enjoyment of the game, be it a bug... Or going from paid app to free 2 play etc. Always be weary of updates..

  12. That is definitely bad for sure. Too bad so many developers are switching premium to freemium on us, adding ads, and adding tons of inapps.

I actually hope Apple gets sued class action for illegal bait and switches at some point, that is probably the only way for it to be stopped.

Really shouldn't be legal for one to buy a premium app and then the app turning freemium with one having to buy it again.

    Really shouldn't.

Your view is also shaded by the small types of games you like. Western Action Rpg's, while getting popular have never been an overwhelming favorite gametype that people make thousands of games for.

Elder Scrolls is an obvious exception.

Sure, but Im not limited to just this genre. If you take a quick look into my signature, you can see that there are more genres there...

However, I cant just force myself to just start liking, for example, japanese turn-based RPGs, because thats just eh.. Id rather play snake.

iOS, unfortunately has a shortage on exactly these types of games that I like...

As I said before, I think you're overlooking the large number of developers who haven't stooped to freemium. While EA and co. may not respect us as gamers, but there are tons of both under-the-radar and prominent developers who do release premium games or free games that don't have freemium aspects.

Man, you guys are making me nostalgic. I've also been playing mobile games since the Java days, and to be honest part of me thinks that I had more fun with those games than I do with iOS now. Looking back that sort of felt like the SNES era of mobile gaming. The other nice thing was that, since there was nothing like an app store, you could always discover really obscure (or modded) java games if you looked at forums online, like a fan-made Zelda game made from scratch, or a modded 2D top-down version of GTA: Vice City.

Anyway, you guys should know that there are ways of getting N-Gage games on normal Nokia S60 phones as downloadables without actually having to get an N-Gage. But then I guess you might prefer the actual control layout on the N-Gages.

Puh leese. The App Store is a battlefield, every cent counts when you can get one. One month after release most apps drop 10-20 ranks on the chart. Forget about making thousands, if devs can get 10 more people into spending money they will try their best to make sure they spend as much as possible. Thing is, some would be more subtle and relatively nicer at doing that than others.

Well, I could just use the N-gage emulator for the PC, without even having to buy any S60 Nokia. I clearly went with the n-gage because of the authentic controls. And I have to agree on your statement, that games felt more fun back then, maybe it's just the nostalgia, but I'm soon gonna find out :)

N95, N96 and some of N8x series had fold media buttons that would automatically light up when playing N-gage service game; they could also be mapped as A, B or other buttons for applications and emulators.
All this Symbian and n-gage games talk got me into firing up Star Wars on N96 again ( that game is just crying for touch controls with all the dot- into-lines - connecting to use force powers ).
Dirk Dagger and Fallen idol and Resident Evil Degeneration were also awesome games for that time. Not to mention Rovio's java games before Angry birds shenanigans , they were talented studio from beginning and released many popular games - Darkest fear trilogy , Star Marine, SWAT elite, etc...
Anyway, after playing a couple of java games , I cherish hardware progress that allows us to experience more immersive "hardcore " games in palm of our hands nowadays even more.
But I'm going way offtopic, someone should open java/ Symbian games nostalgy topic :D
