Yes I just read about it on Cracked.

I really hope to see this in all future electronics. Imagine, 10 seconds to completely charge any device, that'll save people lot of money on electric bills and help the planet.

That's pretty cool, now they just need to find a way to increase the capacity of batteries so they can last for longer without needing to be recharged.

Did they mention anything about battery life?

It's speculated to be 10 seconds.

Not any device according to this:

"A prototype made using the new technique could be fully charged or discharged in just 10 to 20 seconds. A similar sized ordinary battery takes six minutes to charge."

If you have a device that usually only takes 6 minutes to charge, that's the one that'll go as quickly as 10 seconds. Looks like they weren't experimenting with the standard 2-4 hour charging batteries many of us are used to.

It's still quite an improvement though. It now takes as little as 10 seconds to charge a battery that would normally take 360 seconds to charge. I don't know if the technique can be applied to larger capacity batteries (or what affect it would have on the charging time) but in theory a battery that normally takes 4 hours to charge would only take about 7 minutes to charge.

This is fairly old news I thought...

Anyway, imaging combining this with WiTricity's wireless charging and a carbon paper battery! You could have the ultimate device.

I'd settle for manufacturers putting in a decent sized battery in to start with I'd happily take any device thicker for a decent runtime. I imagine even if you thickened devices by one centimetre you could easily add at least 10 or more hours power these days, ok they would still take ages to charge but at least you would only have to do it every few days.

These battery storys never seem to go anywhere though I think I've read dozens of super new battery breakthroughs and nothings ever happened all of them sounded really promising.

Yeah I've been hearing a lot of stories too. Battery improvement should really be the next big thing, everyone (whoever they are) should be focusing on fixing this problem because it's only going to get worse.

I think this is going to be a disaster... Imagine our kids growing up with everything instant response... I mean kids today are even like that.. they won't want to wait for anything!... I think its a terrible idea

I'm not sure on that second point. Pardon my interjection, but I was more on the line that 6minutes and 10seconds, is just on the charging times? I believe that the amount of electricity used in these cases would amount to be fairly similar? Save for that little bit of phantom power draw?

haha, 10seconds charge for a 10second battery life?!

It's only bad now because we have to wait for half of our things and we don't for the other half.

Once everything is running at the same speed, our perception on waiting will be changed.

Why would you want to teach your child the values of waiting for a phone to charge anyway? You've got things like cooking, school, Christmas and a whole bunch of other events that involve waiting to focus on. Fast battery charging is only going to help people.

This is pretty amazing, I hope it'll go into the market soon.

This will also save us all a huge amount of money with the gas prices :O..
