For score chasers, this game is certainly brilliant gem. Unless you have a strategic mind in advance and play it quickly and precisely, you could not get to a high place on the board. My only strategy is: always try to get double or triple as fast as you can. This game definitely is the best real time puzzle/action game out there in my opinion. For casual gamers who don’t much care about score, it is still fun as a time killer, because the story is irrational and absurd in a funny way. And it is pretty easy to just complete the story.
It's roguish only in the sense that there's permdeath and (AFAICT) no carry-over of benefits from previous playthroughs. I'm currently getting wrecked by the umbrella tile that summons a time-eating aerial bomb. Can anyone tell me how to avoid that? Edit: Oh, derp - tap and hold the umbrella.
I played this very intensely for three days, and then deleted it - and I don't regret a penny spent. Very enjoyable. Finished the story several times and broke into the top 1,000 on the overall leaderboards, but some of those scores are insane!
Harrumph. Can someone give me a clue on how to unlock the secret character cards? Hidden soup pots? Killing with cows?
Wheeeee, I'm enjoying this game quite a bit! I've now unlocked all cards except the 40k onion one, which will take another week probably. My one gripe is that it's really easy to "overheat" in space mode and summon lots of bosses that end up gobbling up my time bar. Some tips, in spoilers mode for those who'd like to discover it on their own: Spoiler You enter space mode by setting up 2-4 lines at once. Click on the cow bell and you'll enter space mode The timer runs out fast if you only matched two lines (for one bell), but it lasts quite a long time on a MIRACLE match (four lines for three bells). Space mode increases the number of onions to click on, makes you one-hit all monsters, and drops fruit (extra points) and onion knights! Onion knights are crucial for killing bosses in a timely fashion. Bosses are pains in the butt. You can easily kill them by spamming onion knights you've hoarded over 10-20 levels. They only take damage when their shield is down. (The voice will say "BARRIER" a second or two before it becomes invulnerable.) Bosses run around the screen and occasionally hurt your timer, but mostly you're just spamming onion knights at the bottom of the screen or matching furiously to bring up onion knights while the boss is roaming around. The miracle match is the best match (four lines) and summons a soup pot full of goodies. You create one by matching all eight inner boxes around the center, then also all four corners and four cardinal directions. Then you match the center! Once you've mastered the shape, you can create them pretty easily. *_*_* _***_ **_** _***_ *_*_* To unlock most of the secret cards, you need to enter space mode (double/triple/miracle match) and then create a miracle match in space to summon the character. This can actually be hard to do because if you match too many lines at once in space mode, you'll overheat the timer bar (it turns red) and then kicks you into an impromptu boss battle against an onion boss mk1/2/3/4... This can be a great way to add points total, but it's also a pain because you have to waste your onion knights. It's sometimes best to go into space mode on a triple, then get the miracle match in space mode -- rather than back-to-back miracles. Once your bar is "red," you should match one line at a time to avoid summoning a boss (unless you want to). The secret cards (once activated) will turn some of the cows on the bottom screen into secret characters. (You must touch one to get credit for the card!) They give you points for touching them. Getting Bonefish activated in lvls. 61-70 and then hitting a bunch of them for 200k points was key to my getting the highest point card (35 million? I forget). Has anyone activated enough of the secret bosses before lv.20 to make "something happen"? I wonder how many you have to activate and also what happens. I'll let people know (in spoilers) what the final ending is, if people are interested. It'll be a week or so before I've farmed enough regular onions.
@rslowe Oh, brilliant. Unlocked all the secret characters in two sessions. Thanks! I'll snail-race you to the ungodly number of onions. Where did you see the tip about activating secret bosses to make "something happen"? It sounds familiar - one of the card descriptions? Also… in later cow levels, I’ve noticed the appearance of horizontal metal capsules with numbers on them. When I tap them, they go to the top of the screen. Have you identified their function?
The onion boss (Hikkuri?) and/or his "secret summon version" (Hikkuri mk2?) have descriptions. Spoiler One of them says "Rumors suggest that something will happen if too many are summoned before lv.19." I think you'd have to activate miracles over and over again to get a bunch of overheated space modes to summon them, but I don't know how many. Also, in the first 20 levels, you don't have much time to spare for boss battles, so I usually get "Time's Up!" if I try to fight more than one or two. =/ Some superninja player is going to need to do it. The capsules look like semi-secret characters, just like the characters who show up randomly in space mode at other levels (the three little pigs, the lover pairs, etc.). I think the card descriptions suggest that the three capsules Spoiler are just different models of the robot Doctor Peace, degrading in quality over time .
Just bought this with the small sale discount. Played one round. WTF? LSD? I am not much for frantic tapping game play, but definitely intrigued.
As you get more into it, you'll find the tapping becomes less frantic, more strategic... though still pretty hectic at times, especially during boss battles. The post by rslowe on the previous page is a good guide if you ever need some clues to make sense of the (seeming) madness. I was surprised by how much my impression of it changed between the first play and the... like, 30th. Almost dismissed it after the first couple of plays, but ended up captivated. It's quite bold really, how the game lets players feel their way through its rules.
