I'd say check out Kiuas, folkish power/melodeath, I'm not a fan but you might like them. Anyway, I'm off for today, tired as hell. Gnight. :>
On Kiuas: I like the music for the most part... but the vocals are bleh. Tried a bit of each of their 4 albums and couldnt find anything that really stuck out. Great instrumentals, just nothing really special. And like I said, the vocals are kind of annoying almost lol.
Just ran through Avenged Sevenfold's self titled album, and it's pretty sick! It's not as good as Waking the Fallen (obviously) or City of Evil, but it's pretty awesome in itself. There's some really, really awesome songs on there (Scream, Afterlife, Lost, A Little Piece of Heaven), but in comparison to their other albums, it's just not as good.
What sort of metal are you into, I have thousands of CDs most of which are metal so I might be able to recommend some stuff to you. I did a quick search on the thread and noticed Opeth was already mentioned. Fantastic progressive metal that will appeal to even non metal heads or old school metal heads, my wife for instance loves Opeth and she hasn't followed metal for a long time. Actually come to think of it she seems to enjoy most of the metal music I listen to. Also did a search and noticed there was no mention of Finntroll. Finntroll have many metal elements however, I would probably describe them as black metal or folk metal. The Finnish folk metal style used in their music is called humppa. Friends and family who don't even like metal enjoy Finntroll, hell even my mother enjoys some of their stuff.
Alright, give me some progmetal! To be specific, I'd like something similar to Shadow Gallery's Room V. Thanks. :> Also, welcome to the thread. : D
Um... to be honest I've never even heard of them. I'm too lazy to search every page of the thread so if you don't mind letting me know some of your other favorite metal bands I can hopefully suggest some more you might like. I'm not too into progressive metal however, as mentioned I do like Opeth. Other groups I enjoy are Moonsorrow, Tiamat, Vintersorg, older Therion stuff (not so much their new stuff), Nightwish (same as Therion though), Epica, After Forever, Mastodon, Stratovarius, Tyr.... I'm sure there are more that I listen to but I'm more into melodic death metal, symphonic metal, folk metal, viking metal, and yes even some doom metal. Also I searched and noticed the hate for Dimmu Borgir. While I agree that their attire is far from appealing people need to understand that this was common in the early days of black metal or more precisely Norwegian black metal. Why simply state they suck because of their appearance, if that was the case KISS would never be as famous as they are. In any event I must agree that I myself don't care for the new Dimmu Borgir stuff though I do still purchase their albums. My two favorite Dimmu albums are For all Tid and Stormblast (the original not the re-recording) both of which were the only two albums sung in Norwegian.
You're missing out on a lot, Shadow Gallery is an amazing band. They're like Dream Theater with emotions and more skills. : D Meh, I like most of the bands listed, though I'm more into the power/prog/symphonic genres, so Tyr isn't really for me. Good to see some love for Strato, one of my all time favorites. Which is your favorite album by them? I'm generally anti-black metal, it's just a horrible genre IMHO, DB was just an example, as they are pretty popular right now and I find them completely ridiculous. But as I said, I think black metal is just a horrible genre, pretty much the only metal subgenre (except nu metal and stuff like that, which isn't really metal at all) which I just can't tolerate.
I honestly have haven't listened to Stratovarius in a long long time. Just to name a few for the time being check out some of the following groups: Tristania (older stuff) Theater of Tragedy (older stuff) Leaves' Eyes Asmegin Rhapsody of Fire and Luca Turilli Haggard Falkenbach Amon Amarth Hollenthon Elvenking Finntroll Korpiklaani Bal-Sagoth (very epic and comical)
haha... now worries. So aside from Haggard, Stratovarius, Dream Theater and Shadow Gallery can you post other groups you like? I personally enjoy a huge variety of metal (and pretty much most other music genres as well, aside from country and rap) and that is probably why I have thousands of CDs. To me I can find beauty in almost anything music related from doom metal like My Dying Bride or Katatonia to folk metal like In Extremo or Asmegin. Also if by chance you never heard Katatonia or if you have but never listened to the album Viva Emptiness, check it out.
I'm kinda feeling like listening to some post-hardcore stuff right now... Anyone with any good bands, hit me with some suggestions.
Sure. I really love Blind Guardian, Epica and like Therion, Symphony X, and lots of lesser known ones like Deadsoul Tribe, Psychotic Waltz, Falconer, Wuthering Heights, Seventh Wonder, Estatic Fear, most Devin Townsend stuff and I couls go on, but I just woke up, so I won't. Ah yes, forgot to mention my biggest favorite, music by Arjen Lucassen (including Ayreon, Star One etc.). I'll listen to that album... sometime later. @Somerandomdude: Really can't help you with that. :/
Welcome to the thread Drucifer, you mentioned you like Melodeath, that's my specialty! lol. It's my favourite in the sub-genre of metal. Though I am like you and listen toa wide variety of metal (music in general, I listen to everything pretty much, with some exceptions of course). On the Dimmu Borgir subject, there was one album, one of the o nes you mentioned all non-english speaking, that wasn't terrible, but still not for me. I find most of the Black Metal/Doom Metal bands out there pretty boring. Just not for me really. I do like some bands in the genre, just not enough to claim I am a fan of the genre. @Somerandomdude post some examples of post-hardcore and I will give you some tracks. Heres one of my favourite:
Bumpin' from yesterday. Still amazing. : D @Booch: You'll be happy, it seems like I love the Iced Earth song 'Watching Over Me'. Do they have more like that?
That's awesome man. One of my favourite songs for sure. The Jon Shaffer wrote that song for a friend who passed away in a vehicle accident and was also the reason they were named Iced Earth, as he suggested it. (they were called Purgatory before that). Unfortunately that song has the most heart of any other song they have, so there are not much like it. But check this song out, you may like it too. Another one of my favourites.
Listenin'. Only one similar to that? Too bad, I really loved it, and thought that the D&W songs 'Down Where I Am' and 'Fiddler on the Green' were somewhat similar (just with a much better singer : DD). Anyway, got something similar from any band then? I really love this kind of songs.
Yeah sounds like you are more focused on symphonic metal and I don't think there are too many bands in that genre however, I'll try to post some groups that I own CDs for that have a similar element. Sorry if I posted some of these groups already I am trying to do this from my head here at work. Kamelot After Forever Lacrimosa Tarja (ex Nightwish vocalist) Opera IX Sonata Arctica Apocalyptica Wintersun Edenbridge Susperia Theatres des Vampires Graveworm Trans-Siberian Orchestra Within Temptation Thanks for the welcome. Yeah the only Dimmu Borgir albums that get played at my place are their first two, Stormblast and For all Tid. Actually I like their third album a lot too but still not as good as their first two. There isn't much I like in the way of Doom Metal but My Dying Bride has some of my all time favorite songs. Chilling lyrics and the tone at which they are delivered is just haunting. Songs like The Dreadful Hours, My Hope, the Destroyer, and Catherine Blake are fantastic with beautiful lyrics and once I hear them I have a hard time getting them out of my head.
Sweet dude, I've briefly listened to My Dying Bride, it was one of my late friend's favourite bands. They are pretty good. Gotta be in the mood for em but maybe I'll give em another once over for old times sake. What are some of your favourite Melodeath Bands? My lists contains but it not limited to: In Flames At the Gates Skyfire Nightrage Dark Tranquility Scar Symmetry (old) Darkest Hour Arch Enemy (old) Amon Amarth Zonaria Unanimated Wintersun Children of Bodom (old) In Grief Eternal Tears of Sorrow DevilDriver (I consider some of their stuff melodeath anyways) The Black Dahlia Murder (old) Blinded Colony Be'Lakor And sorts like that. There's other that I am just not thinking of off the top of my head ahahaha @Balu` I shall find stuff for you that sounds somewhat like "Watching Over Me". What did you think of "A Question of Heaven"?
