Which song do you mean? @Booch: Green Carnation/ Opeth seems to be a notable influence on these guys, you might like 'em.
Firewind is fun power metal, nothing special. Worth a few listens, though. Random stuff you might/might not know:
I actually find Firewind to be very interesting due to their plentiful shredding and riffing. Almost sound like melodic power metal to me . The first song is good, the rest are ok. Not listenable past the first try though...
If there was such a thing as melodic power metal, they'd be classified as that. However, melodic power metal is sort of like fast thrash metal or slow doom metal (so I believe the word I'm searching for is redundant). Hm, sometimes I wonder what makes you like a band/song, but I still don't have the slightest clue. What about those songs make them unlistenable?
Thrash metal sounds much closer to metalcore (without the poppy elements and more rhythmically aggressive) than power metal . Slow doom metal? Do you mean funeral doom? Or just doom? I dunno myself actually, but songs I don't like share a few common traits such as: - Linear sound structure. Everything just sound like one long piece of string. Boring to look at and equally uninteresting to listen to. Nothing 'pops' out and grab the listener's attention. - Uninteresting riffing/shredding. Melodious guitars are not mandatory, but the ones that feature melodic guitars without sounding interesting just aren't worth listening to. - Small variations in high-frequency sounds, eg. guitars, epic symphonic instruments or vocals. High frequency sounds generally stand out from the rest of the instruments and if they fail to impress, I'm generally not inclined to enjoy most of the song. The 3rd song encapsulates all of the above, while the 2nd is ruled out by my 3rd point (esp vocals). I'd try posting some examples to demonstrate my point if you need.
You misunderstood me there. I was just saying that all thrash metal is (relatively) fast, all doom metal is (relatively) slow, so putting those adjectives there is completely pointless, just like putting melodic before power metal, since it is all (relatively) melodic. Also, evolution of metalcore: punk -> hardcore punk -> metalcore (though calling this a regression would be more fitting^^) evolution of power/thrash metal: heavy metal -> speed metal -> thrash metal + power metal So which is closer again? Post some, because all of that seems to be an extremely overcomplicated way of saying "it's all up to personal taste". :Đ
I see what you mean but some albums tend to reflect some other genre's aspects more prominently than its peers. Thrash these days sound much closer to metalcore than power, regardless of their roots. Contributing to the blurring boundaries, some artists tend to exhibit aspects of both genres making it harder to recognize the distinctiveness of either. I'll post some after school, mornings are for internet surfing and not heavy posting .
That's true. However, these differences within a genre (let's say power metal) are most of the times far too insignificant to warrant the creation of a new subgenre, especially if the adjective chosen to differentiate it would describe the whole genre. 'True' thrash metal is still closer to power, imho, but I'm looking forward to hearing those examples. :>
The 'melodic' of my previous post functioned more as an adjective than a genre term, but w/e, I'd wish there was such an genre though . Modern melodeath are plagued with saccharine clean leads that it almost strays into pop melodeath. I'll just take some examples from power metal because that's where we have the most common ground in (and partly due to my overloaded workload). Theocracy - Nailed Boring with emphasis on constant pitch of vocals and uninteresting singing. The riffing is hypnotic. What I like. Too much to list and explain in detail so I'll just grab random ones from my library and try my best to analyze what I like about them. Firewind - Mercenary Man SWEET guitar riffs!!! OMG I LOVE THE RIFFS of this song! The first few lines of half whispered singing does have a bit of my much disliked exhaling at the end of every line, but its melodic structure works for me. The rest of the song, from instrument to vocals, has no obvious weak aspects for me to comment on. Theocracy - 30 Pieces of Silver Fantastic shredding, varied vocals and gorgeous chorus. I especially like how sections of the song to build up from low notes/pitch melodies to high pitched ones or vice versa. The music sounds like it has a sense of direction in pitch, and that sounds great. That'd have to be it for now. Gotta get stuck into the Cold War and postmodern historians (who make sense by criticizing others for not making sense so they sound like they make sense but another postmodernist refutes their idea so the reader has no idea who's making sense, or worse, believes every postmodernist makes some sense).
Haha, alright then. It's just that I've seen that as a genre description (mainly on lastfm, I think), and it seriously annoyed me. >.< Hm, I sort of get your point, but also disagree with the examples you've shown me. But this makes me wonder, what would you think of "middle period" Stratovarius and early Sonata Arctica... Quite possibly the shreddiest music I know.
You wouldn't be who you are if you didn't disagree with me . Sonata Arctica's song was ok. Don't dislike it, but not liking it either. Stratovarius. More, please?
More? Well, alright. Thankfully, there's plenty more - they've done like 5-6 albums in a similar style. Of course they have songs that are quite different, I've tried to stick to the fast, shreddy ones here.
Sry for the silence, school is never kind on school leavers . Loved the Orden Ogan song. The Alkemyst song was ok, I'll listen to more of their material. Ballistic's riffing sounds close to thrash. Not bad, but the riffing and chord progression aren't my taste. Btw, a melodic/gothic metal song:
What do you think of Sabaton - Carolus Rex? I have a tendency to be swayed by others' opinions and I'm leaning on a 50/50 chance between delete or keep, so I need you to help me make a choice .
I'd say keep. Sabaton is a pretty great band, unique within the genre. Also sorry for not posting for a while, I've been pretty busy/tired lately. Anyway, I'm back with full speed! And I have some pretty great recommendations for you later today.
