That's too bad, I rarely find that many promising but, in the end disappointing bands in a row.

But Epica is awesome! The song Chasing the Dragon made me love them when I first heatd it. Anyway, good to see you've discovered those, Within Temptation can be pretty generic, though.

Nah, not even close. I find good metal bands on a daily basis if I search for them. :>

They all sounded very generic and inferior compared to what I already have...

!?!?!???? Looks like we're on different terms in regards to symphonic! I actually found that song (and other Epica songs) to be slow and boring. There just wasn't enough stuff going on to capture my attention. The vocals don't have much appeal to me either, ranging from boring to unentertaining.
WT succeeds where Epica fails with its bombastic and plentiful symphonic elements. The somewhat catchy vocals are a great plus for me. Haven't tried their earlier albums but from research, it would seem that the first is the only one I would enjoy.

Anyway, I forgot to ask, how did you find Assimilate Regenerate?

We definitely are. I'm fine with slower stuff, because I generally don't care about heaviness, I'm just looking for music that sounds good.
WT is good, but it's borderline pop at times.
Since we're at symphonic metal, what do you think of Therion?

It wasn't bad, definitely interesting. However, I'd say that the djent influence was too big for my taste.

Oh ok... slow stuff put me to sleep. That's why I listen to 'busy' and complex music (cough Ion Dissonance) that keeps the energy high and thy blood pumping.

Where... should I start? 13 full LPs and changes in musical style and composition sure doesn't make it easy for me to get into their sound...
Any recommendations other than me listening to their songs randomly?

Oh and Booch, I may have found a pseudo melodic death album with symphonic elements - Third Act in the Theatre of Madness by Illnath. I loved their second album Second Skin of Harlequin for their rich symphonic sound but the latest album just fails to excite in terms of providing symphonic entertainment that I was expecting. However, the melodic elements are their so, you could give it a try.

Ah, alright. I get that, but I just couldn't stand listening to only fast and heavy music. That stuff gets boring quick.

The early stuff is death metal, Lepaca Kliffoth is thrashy somewhat experimental, Theli is death mixed with slower symphonics, Vovin their slowest album, Lemuria and Sirius B are some of their most balanced, even maybe catchy albums. On Gothic Kabbalah they mixed symphonic with power and gothic metal, then on Sitra Ahra they mix pretty much everything from the past symphonicish albums.
My favorite is the period from Theli to Lemuria, but I'd recommend Gothic Kabbalah as a start to you.

??? I really don't get how fast and heavy music get boring...

Hm... Gothic Kabbalah sounds ok (by that I mean good) to me. Nice layering of instruments spices things up quite a bit. Some of the riffing are also pretty cool. Vocals are pretty pleasant to the ears too. And the FLUTE sounds amazing! (could've been used more often though)

On the topic of symphonic, have you tried Welicoruss albums I posted some time ago? Apeiron and the EP Kharnha are some quality material. There's also more vocals, not to mention the instruments are about some of the best of the genre (imo).

Only slow music would be boring too. Music has to fit my mood, and fast, aggressive music just doesn't do that always. Listening to one kind of music only is insanely boring in my opinion. :X

Glad you like it! For the next one, I think you should go for Sirius B or Lemuria. :>

I have checked some out, and while the instrumentation can be amazing, there is a bit too much black metal influence in it for me.

Oh yes that's certainly correct. That's why I listen to a variety of intense and heavy music, some lower than others but still kinda extreme :D.

    Sure will!

Ok... this might be kinda stupid or late of me but, I never fully understood the distinctive aspects of black metal or its difference to death metal. Does it lie in the drums?

Haha, you probably like more extreme genres than me. I mean, I can enjoy stuff up to death/black and stuff like Strapping Young Lad, but genres like grindcore don't appeal to me at all.

It's not really a huge difference, especially not in the drums. The main differences are in the vocals and the guitars. The vocals are typically growls in death metal, but black metal generally has higher-pitched rasps/shrieks. The guitars in black metal are also higher-pitched mostly with tremolo picking, while death usually has a style closer to heavy metal.

Woot! Two new genres for me to try out! (for some reason, I've managed to steer clear of both) They sound like my type of music :D (I actually love the 'high-pitched rasps/shrieks')

CAN YOU COMPREHEND THE ENERGY OF ROTTEN SOUND?

Holy mind blowing music. I'm drained from listening to their songs (read: euphonic cacophony).

I can't really understand what you like about that stuff. It's just annoying noise to me. :Đ

That's exactly what I don't like about it. For me to enjoy it, music has to be melodic. :>

    How do you like this?

Aw... but headbanging is fun! Grindcore can be absolutely incomprehensible at times but, I do feel like listening to that kind of stuff from time to time.

That didn't appeal to me... I would've liked the contrasting background ferocity but the slow, simple, boring and repetitive prominent melodies just ruined it for me. The vocals are good though.

Not much of a headbanger myself. I like listening to music in a quiet, relaxed enviroment, so I can pay attention to the smaller parts of the music. :>

What you didn't like about it was exactly my favorite part of the song. I really like those little keyboard melodies in his music.

Oh I love listening music in such an environment! I would be able to hear the rich basslines or otherwise muted guitar melodies (PtH in particular).

Just confirming, what section of the song are you talking about? (playing dumb here)

    No harm done?
Well as you know, I'm coming from a melodeath perspective so my expectations of 'melodies' are quite... specific.

Yeah, that's great! Too bad I rarely get the chance do that.

Those fairly simplisctic keyboard melodies. In my opinion, they provide a great contrast with the otherwise brutal song.

Sure, this kind of weirdness is definitely not for everyone.
By the way, check out the album Archangels in Black by Adagio, a neo-classical metal band who started incorporating more and more death elements. Maybe it's more up your alley. :>

Well yes, I certainly can appreciate the music from your perspective. Thing is, I feel any melody section repeated twice (or similar enough to the first) without breaks in between gets stale by the second time.

Can't say I like avant-garde metal. I do like parts of the song though (esp near the end).

GOOD! GOOD! VERY GOOD! (with a distinct Cantonese accent)
The vocals have a strange, but attractive appeal to me along with all the instruments.
    ------------------------------------------------
I know you don't like Jap vocals, but My Dearest by supercell (full version, not the 1:30 TV edition) simply sounds MINDBLOWING. Just listen to the instruments... For someone who loves symphonic metal (music?), the song is simply a godsend.
If you hate the vocals so much, there's an instrumental version available (sounds better than the one with vocals imo).
