I actually fully agree with this.

Took me a while to respond to this because I wanted to do my research. And yes, you are right, the game does not use ragdoll physics. That's about as much as you are right about. The idea that the game does not use "physics" is ridiculous. Of course it does -- a physics engine is built in to their proprietary MAX-FX. All over the game there are moving objects that have to interact procedurally with the environment. More to the point, you can throw a grenade at an enemy and see him tumble into the air -- again, procedurally, since he interacts with walls, furniture, etc. It's not quite ragdoll physics because the joints are not articulated, not because the action itself is "canned."

When Remedy started working on Max Payne 2, they originally intended to improve the physics system on their game engine, but then discovered Havok, which allowed them to create a fully interactive environment as well as incorporating ragdoll physics into the death animations.

You claim that Max Payne wouldn't have been the first iOS action game that used ragdoll physics. Could you please enlighten me: what other iOS action games use ragdoll physics?

As to the textures, I suggest that folks take a look at the intro video.

Look at the faces of the enemies as they slow-mo across the screen (see 0:13). To my eyes, they look like they have much less detail than the texture on Max's face. In any event, I've played Max Payne on the PC at the highest setting more than once, and the goons have always had crappy-looking faces.

A while back I said I would post a screen shot of my preferred control method. Here it is:

^regarding the texture, you can clearly see there that you can actually see the features of the enemies faces, in the iOS version you can but they are VERY blurry, as well as their clothing textures, they are just big stains while in the video you can actually see the wrinkles of the jackets and what not, in my opinion...

and regarding the first game that used ragdoll, there was one zombie game, i don't remember the name, "dead strike" or something, which 3rd update included ragdoll physics... and it came out like 3 years ago.

It's the same game and that's all that matters.

Buy it mate, if its my post that put you off I was joking. I was trying to parody the wildly different opinions of this game from some posters here.

IMHO opinion it's very good. Once you play about with the control scheme somewhat.

In a late reply to heringer, I was just simply stating that "in my opinion" your letter came across as a "little" rude. I never meant to imply that giving criticism was rude. Your letter just rubbed me the wrong way, the way you stated that there was a "flaw" and then added a solution to fix the flaw simply read to me as though you were telling them how to do their job. That's why I thought it was a "little" rude. If it was me writing the letter? I would have simply asked if aiming and shooting at the same time would be implemented because I felt as though shooters on the iPhone benefit from that style of control, or something along those lines. Contrary to what you may think, I can criticise, but when I do I try to sound as kind as I can because I don't personally like negative criticism and probably can't take it as well as others; my motto is to treat others the way I would like to be treated and so I do find that I "sugar-coat" things.

If someone is willing to wait for the controls to be improved, then so be it. If aiming and shooting at the same time will make their play experience better (or as good as it can be on an iDevice) then so be it. I myself have an older 3GS, and considering that I can notice lag in the tutorial on the street, I myself am going to wait until I upgrade phones so I can play with it running smoother. I know exactly where you're coming from when you tell people to wait so they can enjoy the game.

And your remark about getting defensive over criticism.. seems as though you yourself were getting a bit defensive about my criticism about your letter. It was just my opinion, and I only meant to say I thought you could have worded it in a way that made it seem like you weren't telling them how to do their job, which was just a small vibe that I got from it. Glad to see you got a reply though.

(I can't seem to quote your reply for some reason.)

Tap to shoot is a little better... But I find myself randomly firing a *lot* when I actually mean to just look around. A bit too much for my liking so I've just reverted to the standard controls.

Are you on a 3GS? Same thing is happening with me, but not sure if it's just because I have a 3GS.

Yeah, in essence it is pretty much exactly the same game.. although there are things missing like the bullet in the bullet cam (which was iconic in the other versions IMO), bullet shells etc. They're just very minor aesthetic omissions though, not a dealbreaker for me personally. Not fussed if there aren't ragdolls.

Never played this back in the day so i'm very happy to finally get my hands on it. Yeah i can understand people having some problems with the controls, took me a while to get used to iOS gaming at all last year but now i'm a dab hand with most touch screen controls. Enjoyed and play GTA3 a lot on my ipod and now Max Payne.

Of course there should be comments from the pro-Max Payne brigade and the ones with negative comments. Would be boring if every single post was WOW this is the best game ever

Overall i think Max Payne on iOS is very good, the price is superb and i hope sales are good so we'll get more Rockstar conversions.

If people dont like it fair enough, i cant stand Angry Birds but i dont bother posting in those threads non stop about my issues with the game.

Whatever the differences in the textures, they are minor. Once you start using the sniper rifle you can actually see some detail on the clothes, as well as some facial detail.

You may be right about Dead Strike. I've tried to erase that game from my memory.

Will this work on my 3GS?

Hey guys, I've been sort of a lurker for the past couple weeks on the forums, but finally decided to break out of my shell and post cuz I'm a little lazy to read through all 20 something pages of this thread haha

I'm a huggggge fan of the series, but am hesitant to go ahead and buy this game for a couple reasons:

    1) I have a 3GS... and am not sure how long my good ol' phone will last

    2) 1.33GB... Is it worth it???

    and finally, the ultimate question:

    3) How does it compare to other platforms? Will I feel the way I feel after I watch a really crappy movie adaptation of my favorite book? WILL THIS BE LIKE MAX PAYNE THE MOVIE???

I'm sure there are people out there who have asked the same questions, that have ventured forward and answered questions for themselves... HELLPPP MEEEE

Oh, I thought your post had a dissapointing tone to it. But yeah I bought the game and I've gotten used to the controls after using it for a bit - I don't think they're that bad at all, this coming from someone who beat the pc version.

Also I think people are a bit anal on the graphics - they're not bad at all. Did people really expect it do be graphically the same as the pc? This game wasn't built for iOS hardware, so for a port its pretty good and plays well. Finally we don't have to reort to the horrible 9mm game to get our Max Payne fix at work :D

4 years ago I was playing Quake2 andQuake 3 Arena on my N95 8gb! I was playing Snake 12 years ago on my first nokia. And Iphone is not a simple phone but also a portable console like psp or nintendods! So stop calling Iphone a simple phone.

I'm playing with an Iphone4s and in the bullet cam, the bullet is missing.
I would like to say that texture are very inferior respect pc version, the enemy's faces are too blurry and the clothes too. Maybe rockstar lower the texture because of 3gs limitation. I noticed that during explosions frame rate drops and the game is not smooth. But on 3gs the game run well? There is someone who is playing with a 3GS here?

Sorry to say that graphic is slightly lower than I've expected.
But the game play is much better than Morden combat or mass effect.

the improvements i would like to see in the controls of Max Payne:
-remove the fire button when you select "tap to shoot"
-add the "drag" feature to the fire button by default to aim while firing.
-save the sensitivity selected by the user
-(may be asking for too much) but i would like to see gyroscope (it works so well with GL's shooters)

it would be my favorite game just by adding the 1st two.

*and to the ppl still settling with the performance and graphics of this port.

i did expect the game to be EXACTLY the same to the pc version, lol i have an old ACER aspire ONE with 1 gb RAM and a 32mb fx card, and the game runs smoothly at the highest settings.

why should it run any less good on a device that is at least twice as powerful (iPod touch 4th)?

Max payne is a classic and the ios version is a great port. A few things need fixing though, it needs updating to add aiming while firing. Also tap to fire needs tweaking so you dont fire while trying to look around.

Looking forward to the future of ios gaming, im sure we will see san andreas at some point, probably for the iphone 5 or 6 as its going to need a bit more power.

    Here's a screenshot from my 4S:

And here's a screenshot from the PC version:

Does that look like "very inferior" textures to you? It sure doesn't to me.

^well they do look the same.

so all i have left to complaint (besides the controls) is the performance, why is the bullet on the sniper missing? why the lag with multiple enemies or splosions? why rockstar? DX

i'm sorry, but this was my favorite game back then, so i did expect to get the same experience.
