Game Impressions from the beta So, I am one of the lucky people that was involved with beta testing. I must say up front that working with Keith has been a great pleasure on my part - he gives great feedback on the feedback that is provided - something that many devs don't do making the testing much more difficult...Keith gave us permission to start posting impressions since it is being submitted very soon... So on to the game - Please forgive me that my prose sucks - I don't have Big Albies or Windburns give of gab - but I'll try.... Most of you know the background premise - you are Max, kid extraordinaire, who has to save the world when aliens attack (of course you get shamed into it when you don't want to, but they want to borrow your zap gun)... There are 2 play modes - story (adventure) and survival... Game play is dual stick type. Controls are very smooth, and aiming is a real pleasure. Movement is also very precise (which is absolutely necessary for getting very far in survival). As you move through the levels Max accumulates money, and is able to purchase various upgrades - a few are spread shot, speed, and health reaccumulation... There are a number of hidden upgrades that either others can mention, or will leave them for discovery (more fun that way). Level design is what you would expect from Imangi - in a word - spectacular.. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore for cash rewards - and of course more aliens to zap! Levels vary, but generally have to do with saving friends who are trapped. All the while you are looking, you are being attacked... very frenetic action - in a very good way. Graphics and sound add to the experience. On my iPhone 4 and 3Gs there was no slow down, and no interruption even with the enemies filling the screen (in survival mode). There are some great graphic effects with the enemiies and with weapon effects. The difficulty is great for me - a nice ramp up, but even with dying, the levels don't feel like they are impossible. Also, as you are making money, you can upgrade your person via a shop. For the more expert - they can go without any upgrades for the more ultimate challenge - I need upgrades, I'm old... For me, the game feels most closely to Ratchet and Clank (my all time favorite video shooter game series) - it marries the shooting, adverture elements, upgrades, and exploration. Each level feels fresh even with some of the repetition of tasks. Survival mode is just that - survive ever spawning aliens that are spawning all over the place and keep getting ever numerous and more powerful. Right now, there is one map with the survival mode area. Great place for trying out upgrade possibilities (you can mix and match up to 3 different ones at once), as well as earning some extra cash! Also, a great place to practice your shooting skills! Naturally, Imangi comes in with some great detail work (that many of us beta testers suggested ) - like some great area effects from blowing up cars. You can sometimes find some great surprizes left in mailboxes as well! All in all, as a fan of dual stick shooters - I think that this will satisfy a lot of peoples craving for a fun shooter that is fun to play, either on a casual level, or a more hardcore level.
I agree with basically everything pluto6 said (nice job, BTW). I'd just like to add that this game performed perfectly on the iPod Touch 2G - I never encountered slowdowns or anything of the sort.
Wow, pluto6 basically summed it up. I have to add that this is one of the best on the device. The controls are really smooth( first thing I noticed while playing). I have played over 60 dual stick shooters on my ipod and this stands out as a favorite in the controls. The difficulty is nice and while there are some tough parts I feel like it isn't steep at all. Upgrades make difficult sections easier but not a walk in the park (figuratively speaking as there are park levels ). The upgrade system is well implemented with three possible upgrades at a time(which are bought with the money you find). The levels are well crafted(and a nice easter egg on one of them ). Achievements and treasure will make completionist go back to previous levels. And finally survival is very fun and addictive. Its incredibly fun to play survival and get a better score than Keith .
Thanks pluto6! I'm glad you enjoyed the game so much and we appreciate the thoughtful review! It was a lot of fun making the game and we couldn't have made it so awesome without all the help of the testers, so I really appreciate your feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed testing with us! We tried very hard to get this to run well on most devices. We targeted 2nd generation devices and newer, but it was even playable on my 1st generation iPhone, which surprised me. The frame rate isn't as nice when there is a lot of action, however... You totally beat me! Which weapon combo were you using? My weapon of choice was spread shot with fast shot. Just to let you all know, we submitted the game to Apple for approval last night! Hopefully it will be out before Christmas! Can't wait to hear what everyone thinks! -Keith
Ha that's the same combo I used. I just usually ran away in tough situations to heal a bit(doesn't work too well later levels though). And congrats on submission! Hopefully Apple gives it a little weekly app love when its out .
