Can someone convince me to see why Monster Hunter is so good and why everyone loves it so much, it doesn't look very fun to me.

    Great controls.
    Great graphics for iOS.
    Amazing game.
    Literally hundreds of hours.
    No IAP or 'boosts'.
    Can hunt big ass monsters.
Can choose what weapon you want to use, including great sword, sword and shield, lance, long sword, hammer, hunting horn, dual blades, gun lance, light bowgun, heavy bowgun, and lastly bow.
Each weapon class has it's own upgrade tree with multiple branches.
Craft new weapons and armor from the materials you gather from monsters, or just stuff that you found.
Not too heavy on story, mainly focused on pure gameplay.
    There's cats in it.
Strategy and practice are required to efficiently take down monsters.
Challenging- Monster Hunter ain't for no wussies.
Multiplayer that is NOT through gamecenter matchup.
Multiplayer games can have up to 4 people.
Instead of grinding for exp like most games, your power and armor is determined by your equipment. However, good armor and good weapons don't make a good hunter- to succeed you will have to learn the moves of monsters and learn when to attack.
This is no hack'n'slash- if you think you can charge into a fight and repeatedly attack the enemy, you're going to have a bad time. Timing is key.
    $4 coffee = 10 minutes, $15 game = over 150 hours. HOURS.

Okay seriously that's probably around 20 reasons as to why you should get monster hunter. If you don't believe me maybe you should check out some gameplay on youtube.

Some of the other folks on the mhfu thread might be able to help you out further :)

I have also been watching Valiant Hearts since it's announcement, but I saw that it was made episodic, and that the other part is $10 I believe, so I would be paying $16 for basically no replay value and a short game, or I could pay $18 for a lot of replay value and a long game. Also should I wait until there is a price drop or will that not happen?

MH will not drop in price anytime soon.
Honestly you should just get it. The worst that can happen is not being very good at it.

I don't see how you are stumped between a short, one-time-only game and a long, enjoyable game. Seems like an easy choice to me :p

I've been bingeing on Kairosft games these last few weeks (dungeon village, cafe nipponica and ninja village) and I really enjoy them especially the fact that certain elements carry forward into your next playthrough. I then moved on to FTL which I'm also really enjoying but I dislike the fact that once you die you start over but I love the randomness and stratagy.

Does anyone recommend any other Kairosoft games or know of any other games where progression is saved. My ideal game at the moment would be something like FTL but with the option to carry so etching over to give you a head start next time (say x scrap or one of your crew or a weapon)

    Cheers

The Nightmare Cooperative or Phantom Rift?

Really like the look of both of them. I never did manage to get 868-Hack though, so I'm not sure how good I'd be at Nightmare Cooperative ... but it looks awesome. Phantom Rift is the type of game I usually go for, like the art and the style but I see it's also quite slow... still, it looks brilliant. Can't decide!

I have phantom rift and it's a really good game.
If by 'slow' you mean the movement speed, the devs (Foursaken media) are fixing that in an update that is being submitted.

I'm eyeing FDG game's "Pixel Adventures Bundle" which has Across Age DX & 2 in it, But I remember REALLY getting pissed off by certain things in the original Across Age.

I remember being forced to walk into enemies to attack them, the female character being useless as well as very weak, and enemies ripping you to shreds within seconds... due to the fact that your character had no invincibility frames after being hit.

Does Across Age DX fix any of that, and Does 2 have the same problems?

RPG Masterpieces: Dragon Quest IV vs VIII

I want to get an RPG masterpiece, i don't mind if it's expensive as long as it's worth it. I already own Final Fantasy VI (I know it's not the same genre, but i'm also very proud of my XCOM). I own Star Wars KOTOR too, but i'm not playing it a lot. I enjoyed both of the KOTORs in PC some years ago, but i don't think it's a game that has aged well, or maybe it's me, but i don't have fun with it. So, my list of candidates has narrowed to Dragon Quest IV and VIII. I'm curious about the iphone optimization, since I tend to use more my iPhone 5S than my ipad mini (no retina). VIIIs visuals are very attractive but the touch arcade review of IV really makes me consider it. The question is easy:

    Which one should I get?
    (I'm open to other suggestions)

    Thank you.

PD: I was going to create a new thread but this seems the right place to post.

  12. did you ever play the old Bard's Tale series (in a time long long ago)?

Monster Hunter FU isn't that visually impressive...

I'd suggest Modern Combat 5 and Infinity Blade 3.

Tail Drift also looks very nice on 5S, should look awesome on your 6

I agree, "The Bard's Tale" is a winner. (Not the old 80s game, it's a port of a 90s PC game with similar title and humor, but also contains the old 80s games as well.)

Aralon is a modern iOS classic.

I just got through Chaos Rings 2, loved it, but it has an iOS8 bug, so I would hold off until that is fixed.

For something completely different, The World Ends With You totally lived up to the hype for me, but it's set in a modern Japanese city (their Times Square equivalent), with graffiti art backgrounds, etc. Not everyone's taste, but it's a really great game.

Also, if you liked XCOM, the Shadowrun game is an interesting one. Similar combat to XCOM when it occurs, but the game is much less combat oriented, and more task/quest/story focused.

I'm looking for games in a category I guess I'd call "beautiful (or unique) puzzle games". Games I love:

    - monument valley
    - sword and sworcery (ok not a puzzle game but couldn't leave it off)
    - Machinarium
    - the Room
    - Device 6
    - a dark room
    - some physics puzzlers like World of Goo, but that genre is getting tiresome

    Suggestions?
