I'm looking for a very high quality 2D J/KRPG that is similar to Crimsonheart Zenonia 5.
    - Preferably 8-way or 360 degree movement control similar to Crimsonheart
    - Good graphics (crystal sharp like Zenonia 5 or Diablo-ish like Crimsonheart are both fine, but can't be too pixelated like retro), multiple classes, good animations (ie not like near-static images)
    - Can be action or turn-based
    - Price or IAP doesn't matter
    - Have that "must-play" factor, haven't been in iDevice games scene for a year or so, so probably missing out on a lot
No dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Hunter by Gameloft... those are not really RPGs.

    Already have/tried:
    - Crimsonheart
    - Zenonia 1-5
    - Inotia 1-4
    - DragonKnight4
    - Dark Gate

Bastion! Better than any krpg on the AppStore.
It you really want an action rpg in the vein of crimson heart, try Master of Dungeon. There's a lite version as well as "plus".

While I'd agree that Bastion is an awesome game, it's not really an RPG - it's an action adventure - there are no classes or leveling or character customization aside from choosing your weapons and skills that you find as you progress. It's also definitely Western, not Asian.
That said, I also highly recommend it, even if you're looking more for an RPG.

I can't remember the difference between the Legends and non-Legends versions, but SoF is an awesome RPG. However, SoF2 is in the works - you may want to wait for that as it will be a HUGE change/expansion on the original. Or you could get both if you don't mind spending the money. :) SoF isn't a traditional rogue-like by the way - it's much more forgiving. While death is permanent, there are lots of features to help you stay alive (like the fact that you move faster than enemies - the game is only pseudo turn-based).

SOF has a non-perma death option. As for Legends or Non-Legends -- Legends is universal, the other is iphone only; other than they are seemingly similar. The original plan was that the non-legends version was gonna get an update to SOF2 but that plans has been scraped when the devs decided SOF2 should be its own game and not an update.

I beg to differ. It is an action RPG Lite. There is levelling, there is pretty deep weapon customization and a lot of different weapons, beverage system is an equivalent of RPG equipement, many special moves to chose from, and of course the idol system to customize the challenge. You can even grind if you want. Controls work very well, presentation is brilliant and it is all around a great game, IMHO.

Hey does anyone know any good Metroidvania games on the iOS? Just finished playing Guacamelee and I kinda want to play some more of that style of game.

I've been on an RPG kick recently, and Ravensword 2 has been on my wishlist for a while. Is it worth the premium price? I don't mind spending $7 for a great game with lots of content, good controls, and lovely graphics (which seemed to be the overall consensus on TA's review) but my wishlist is hardly short & so many good new releases have had me spending a lot more than usual.

Thoughts from those who own/play it?

I can't comment on the gameplay of Ravensword 2 but if you're the kind of person who waits for games to go on sale and already has a huge backlog I suspect Ravensword 2 will be discounted in the near future. This is based on pricing patterns with Aralon; which was released in December then $4.99 in July (7 months post release) and $0.99 in August (8 months).

Buy Ravensword 2 and support CMG. It has a pretty good combat & gameplay but like Aralon, the story isnt really attractive.

    "upgrade" games :)

Hey guys, I just registered on this site!

I am in love with iPhone gaming and I'm now looking for games with more intricate and non-linear upgrade systems! Tower defenses or some sort of RPG'ish style upgrade games!

    Some games I've played;

Heroes and Castles - 8/10 - Amazing game with a lot of point applications and routes to go!

Legendary Wars - 3/10 - Horrible graphics and way too "indie". Not much thought nor serious design.

Hunters 2 - 6/10 - Really fun character development albeit a bit shallow, also the game is so short I feel that they ruined their own game by making the character development system next to moot.

Kingdom Rush - 8/10 - Great tower defense! I very much LOVE the graphics and professionality of the design, unfortunately there is not too much to do...

Battleheart - 3/10 - Not enough customizability at all.

Defender Chronicles II - 9/10 - The one game that made my work as barista very tough. Just so much damn fun!

Fieldrunners 2 - 6/10 - Classic Tower Defense but unfortunately not much customizability/"upgrade" at all :/

Dragon Island Blue - 6/10 - Kinda fun as it starts out with some fun monsters but unfortunately next to zero customizability and nothing to upgrade except a monster once or twice. Quickly loses depth.

So I wonder if anyone has any recommendations? :D

    Thanks!

PS: Don't bother with "FREE" games, they just have nothing to offer :p

Battleheart has low customization options? It's one of the few games where each character can have different builds and roles!

As far as customizations go, i suggest Final Fantasy 5. I also love experimenting builds in EPOCH., which also happens to be my favorite iOS game.

Im sure we have our strategy gaming gurus to drop some good titles, as strategy RPGs are well known for in depth character customization.

There are no stat allocations, no non-linear customizability other than choosing ONE SINGLE different skill every five levels :p

Extremely linear and shallow for my taste :(

I think it's a must-have for any fan of the genre. Is it one of the best in the genre? No. But you'll definitely enjoy it for the time playing. I think it's a good 10-12 hour game, round the price down a buck or so, and you're paying 50c per hour, well worth it for good entertainment!

ps -- It does have all of these, although "lots" is relative: "with lots of content, good controls, and lovely graphics"
