So I'm going on a flight tomorrow and I need something to while away the trip -- I like kind of off-kilter games, but a neat adventure would be OK too.

Any suggestions? Nothing too hack & slash, and I don't dig endless anything.

If you can get past the price and file size modern combat 3 has a good campaign mode, plants vs zombies is a good time waster, dungeon village, zombies, and the sims 3 ambitions (has more features than the normal sims 3 app) nova 2 & 3 are fun but like MC3 they cost a lot and take up a lot of room (you need 4 gigs free to install nova 3,it's 1.7 gigs afterwards) if you like it-mass effect infiltrator looks good though I've never played it but I've played the console games, the infinity project 2 is like fallout 3 but I haven't played it yet (it's 1.4 gigs in size so I hear though)

Kingdom Rush HD for my iPad 1?

I hear its a graphic intense game, don't want to buy it if it crashes frequently.

Not sure what the iPad 1 equates to power-wise to the 3GS, but it ran wonderfully on my phone. Definitely wouldn't call it "graphic intense." Though it's a really pretty and polished game, the 2D visuals are basic from a technical standpoint.

    Supermagical: yay or nay?

Some App Store reviews say you need to buy IAP to progress, some published reviews say it's great.

Yes, if you have a device that can run properly and like what you see from videos. I didn't expect much from it, but was quite pleasantly surprised.
Or at least I would be, if my iPhone 4 didn't suffer from pretty bag stuttering and controls. There are comments in the main thread about it - if you have a device that will run it well, go for it.

You don't need the IAP, but you might have to grind a little in some spots. You should be fine as long as you don't buy things willy-nilly. It's a great game overall.

Still looking for a decent 2D platformer that's not:
    - Endless runner/shooter/whatever
    - Jump + run + collect round objects. No I don't care how many [insert round object] I collected if they have absolutely no meaning other than a score
Must have combat, if it has levels/upgrades too that'll be great. Essentially looking for another Swordigo type game.

Miss Claire Garden. Not like Swordigo, but one of the best platformers in iOS.
