I'd say Space Minor is perfect for an 8 hour drive. It will suck you into it's amazing gameplay and won't let you go for those 8 hours. But I'm not sure about battery usage.

    Candy Mountain, Charlie!
I'd say something like angry birds with 2d cartoony graphics.

So I just got 4 games
    Battle for Wesnoth
    Armada
    Land Sea Air Warfare
    Red Conquest

So far I played the first three and they are amazing
I didn't think Armada was as good as everybody thought but it is pretty nice :D
Battle for Wesnoth has similar play style as Uniwar but with much more variety.
Land Sea Air Warfare is also really good

Red conquest I plan to get to soon

I thought tilting games uses more energy?=drain battery faster? And high graphical games (Space Miner) also drain the battery?

    Doing nothing of importance.

Wow... first time I've ever heard someone discourage the purchase of Plants vs. Zombies. And off all of those, I remember Space Miner KILLING my battery.

Of those, you may want to go for Tilt to Live. A.) It's an awesome game; B.) It doesn't drain much battery, considering that it's not a really complicated game or anything. Accelerometer doesn't affect that much. Plants vs. Zombies is also a great buy as well, considering there's a TON to do in the game, and it's awesome. You really can't go wrong either way. In fact, I recommend buying both if possible, and eventually getting all 3.

May as well just get a bunch of really simple games if you don't want to drain battery.

    Or get some music...

Plus how is he supposed to play tilt to live in a car?

I'm not saying don't buy them-I'm saying don't play them if you want to conserve battery.
And what do you define as "killing" battery? I remember putting a couple solid hours into Space Miner and still being left with 60%.

Ummm... I guess it'll just help him hone his skills. It's a bit of a pain, but it's completely doable, unless you're in some beat-up old car and are driving on dirt paths. Then forget about it.

I know it doesn't make sense, but you can put an hour into TTL and still be left with 85-90% battery. Spacer Miner uses a bit more than that, but for the awesome experience it gives, its worth putting in a couple hours and still being left with 60%

Yeah... I just remember playing it and then having the battery drain quite a bit. It's been a while, but I just remember a good chunk of it being gone. I might have been playing it all day, can't remember since it was back near Christmas, and it was really low.

Also our devices are different-perhaps the iPod 2nd gen has a tougher time handling the high quality graphics of Space Miner than the 3GS. Seems possible....

Yeah, Land Air Sea Warfare looks great and the iTunes reviews are really good. But it seems like nobody is talking about it.

Its actually a lot like a real RTS
You only have 1 mining thing though, but you can upgrade that to gain more ore. You need power to build buildings, so you build power buildings which lead to creation of the unit production buildings. There is actually a lot of units you could choose from. Right now I think there is only one race, but it doesn't matter due to that fact that each building has like 12 units once you get to tier 3. You have a limited amount of space you can hold ore in, but you can upgrade that with a building. There are rally points, 4 control groups, and mega units which I have not built yet. Right now, I'm really liking the game.

It's a steal at 4.99. I mean.......it blows me away. Attack from anyway, as the title says, destructible environment, randomized maps, hundreds of units+technologies.......this game is the pwnage

Agreed. I picked it up back when it was on the $2 sale, and I would have gladly paid $5 for it. And I was extremely skeptical about it too, since I'm not a huge Asteroids fan. But I still loved this game. I really couldn't put it down the entire time I was playing it. Just get it.
