I'm trying to find a nice middle ground. I can make do with a couple thousand blocks of depth. As for building up from the ground I can do this but due to memory limitations of the device I can only display 255 blocks high. This isnt really a problem underground because you won't need to see that far away (unless its a sinkhole but you'll be able to get the idea that it goes deep). I'll elaborate a bit more on dungeons. Dungeons will be the objective of the game. The player can choose to ignore this portion if they like but a lot of useful things will be found in dungeons. These will include gems, ore and other items. Of course gems and ore could be mined aswell but I was picturing larger amounts of them to be found in the dungeons. As for the other items, rings, amulets and wands may be found in dungeons which cannot be crafted. An example would be a wand of wishing. I would not want to make this item craftable as it would make the game too easy but otherwise rewards the player for his efforts in exploring these areas.
I would say to leave it limitless for now, with a few caveats. 1. some kind of depth counter would be a must, this would help track dungeon locations, plus mineral depths (providing you plan to have them located around similar depths. ie. Gold is usually between 200 and 500 blocks deep...) 2. To stop people from mindlessly digging, an option would be to have consecutively stronger blocks the deeper you go. That way users will most likely give up before really getting very far. And perhaps the ones that do can be rewarded...see next point. 3. An unlimited depth leaves you WIDE open for future options and ideas. Perhaps only the truly dedicated will dig down 100,000 blocks to find the dragons den? Or underground caverns of gold/silver/etc. Plus, unlimited depth is a pretty good selling point in my opinion. EDIT: Also, if your main objective is dungeons, then perhaps a name with dungeon in it would be useful? For example. DungeonCraft Dungeon Depths Crafters Dungeons Etc etc.
Yes I do like these ideas. Especially number 2. This would also discourage people from trying to dig down in the deeper dungeons to skip levels.
I know, but the catchiest title to me is the original, Manacraft. Maybe a little shorter, ManaDungo/ManaDungeo
Hmmm yes I agree manacraft is an awesome name but i also think that it sounds very similar to minecraft so people might immediately think of it as a minecraft clone WHICH IT IS NOT!!!!!! Although a super awsome name like manacraft would be worth it
Oh and can we avoid the word dung and craft? Too many .. other implications. ManaDelve? CubiDelve? CubiDepths? Culticube ExcaCube ManaVate Cubirynth
good point xoria XD Mana scape is an awesome name !! It doesn't include the words mine or craft, it's still only 3 syllables and in my opinion I think it's catchy .. - "oh hey dad I'm just going to play manascape" - "no I can't come to the funeral,I've got to play manascape" Try Saying one of these outloud to test it .....
Manascape Is good Edit: either that, or we look at all the possible prefixes for? "scape". (MagiScape ArchuScape etc) but ManaScape was good
SomethIng If this is goin to be unlimited in world size why didn't there be an under ground forest or floating islands above ground and I think manascape is an epic name
Awesome idea I think really cool natural ocourences would be awesome, such as huge waterfalls and canyons. Also floating islands like you said would be amazing ,but would there be a special way to get up to them or would you just build yourself up there ?
I thinkm manascape is a good idea seeming as this game might be infinate could you call it 'infiniscape'? Also, i also think a depth counter would be great! It could just be a counter in the corner of the screen that sais how higher or lower than sea level you are. ..do you think being able to map your world would be good? using magic maybe?
I agree with the mapping idea!! That'll help people not get lost. floating islands high above ground will be cool too. How's the iPhone memory, and game filesize with all this, though? If it could be infinite why not infinite oceans? Will there also be a limit to how high you build? ( Btw I just thought up OmniScape, But ManaScape is more snappy. )
One of the big problems with Minecraft is the resource/memory consumption. But it is written in java so that mostly explains the reason. I would be curious to see some benchmark tests with a dynamic world like this. I know people have made some pretty extravagant worlds in MC that would slow down some older PCs.
