I have had the same problem with the editor, I opened it up and went  and closed it down again, it looks really complicated.

Don't be scared off by the level editor. It seems overwhelming but once you mess with it, it's simple and easy to use.

Darnoc was kind enough to make a tutorial. I suggest watching it. It is on Page 9, post #114

One thing I'd suggest is writing on a piece of paper where your monster routes go so when you go into the wave editor, it's easier to visualize them. Or start off with 2-3 routes is all.

As you test your levels out, you get gems!

Make sure you scale your deck back when testing your level. You might make it too hard for those with weaker decks.

Add a note to your level on how hard you think it is.

When adding waves, make sure to up the wave time on each additional wave, otherwise things come out too fast. You will see what I mean when you start messing around.

Use the fine grid when adding roads, but don't use the grid when adding objects. Things snap to the grid.

Don't add paths to close to the bottom or too high up. Otherwise the ability bar and wave bar may cover towers up.

Save often! It does not auto save!

Don't forget to add ability cards to your waves. There is a button to toggle abilities/monsters.

Once the game has a nice in game map uploader and easy way to access them for others, I'll be making more.

so you can only get purple and yellow from drop?

or can you get lucky from white/green combine and get yellow/purple?

I have never had any drop other than white to my knowledge w/ over 10 hours of play (probably by a lot).

    4 whites = 10% green, 80% orange, 10% purple -- something like that.

4 greens = I've combined 4 greens fairly rarely. I believe I got an orange and a purple

4 oranges = always 4 oranges for me, believe this to be a bug.

I cant suggest combining anything other than whites at this point, although greens might be safe too.

    Hi, guys,

I'll take a look later today, once I finish getting the memory bug squashed. In general, it really surprised me -- the combining system doesn't actually know anything about colors; it only knows value. So it knows you might be combining cards of (105 + 130 + 110 + 108), and generating a card worth 304 ... then the system colors those when they show up.

But it's *always* possible there are bugs here and there! :)

Oh, also -- something that doesn't exist yet, but which I'll try to get in for the next major release: usually when a card is generated, it's very close to the value it should be (eg, you don't "lose" value). However, there's always the chance for a small point loss. I'm going to make it where if you put in a bunch of cards, and for some reason we don't know, the resulting card just isn't worth very much, the system will at least hand you back a bunch of gems, to make up for it. I'll also record the exact case that generated the problem merge, so that we can figure out why it happened later on. :)

Tap to place some happy trees! :)

Yes, I think that's a very reasonable start. It'll mean people need to be connected to the internet in order to see the help/guide, but it should still be pretty useful.

Oh, also -- Darnoc (I think?) from the forums here made a video of the editor in use ... ack, why can't I find the link? I'll search for that and edit this with the link when I find it.

    thanks for the combining info.

btw how does the offensive deck - parring works?
do you get a better opponent if you offensive deck has a lot cards (points)?

i.e. should you pu everythingin it or try and do a 'tight deck'

    Hi, vonknut,

I realized I totally missed one of your questions before, about lightning bolt cards -- the reason you were seeing two cards with something like 105% damage, and yet different colors, is (probably) that they were actually slightly different cards. There are three variations in that series (Lightning Spark, Strike, and Storm, I think), which have different powers and cooldowns. They also start at different rated rarities, which is why you might have a Lightning Spark and a Lightning Strike, each showing 105% damage, with different border colors.

Now then, about offensive decks: we're working on a good pairing system, but for the version that's live right now, it's pretty simple. The server does a check to try to get a reasonable match, but it's *very* simple, so sometimes you may get paired up with someone massively too difficult or easy. So whether you put in lots of weak cards, or fewer strong cards there will be an effect on how it plays, but the server isn't smart enough yet to take full advantage of it.

ever since i was held back in the fourth grade i've had trouble grasping things straight away so sorry for these beginner questions:

Q: how to open up the third and fourth slots for card upgrades
A: Tap to place some happy trees!

this does not compute. how do i open those slots?

Q: do i need to do anything to "see" the offensive deck icon or will it just appear?

Q: do you only combine cards you have duplicates of? why not sell them?

Q: i don't, in fact, have ANY exact duplicates, i have 3 level 2 mage towers but each is different (deck cost, range). do i just pick one to get rid of? (merge)

Q: any tips or general rules on combining cards (like what NOT to do!) would be appreciated. people are talking about combining cards all the time, are you well into the game so you have lots of "extra" cards you can combine?

Q: if i have level 1,2,3,4 of something i have to keep that sequence, right? i can't get rid of 3 and still build 4, correct?

as i sit here on this rainy day i look forward to any help you can give me!!

Normally white or green on drops. I do get oranges too running master difficulty.

I can almost always combine 4 whites and get an orange. Category might make a difference though as I never seem to get better that green on the category with the archer on it(bridge defense , explosive bolts etc)

I have had many times where I combine 4 orange or better offensive cards and end up with a green ;) but generally I'll get the same rarity or higher.

If you are looking to get a different card in the same category. Like let's say you have an orange archer subcontractor card that has 23% cheaper archer outposts And you want a moneybags card that increases monster cash. Just combine that orange card with a white or green of the same category. It is a cheap way to get a different card.

Page 45 post #444 will answer a lot of combining questions.

To unlock more combine slots, just click on the area that you would put the card(has a lock on it) then pay the fee. 100 gems/200 gems

Offensive deck will open up around chapter 2 or so. Maybe earlier but it will eventually open up and be on the bottom of your screen. You will know.

Combine anything you want. Just don't combine a card you really hate to lose unless you have a similar one.

Cards don't sell for much but if you need gems, sure sell them. I think they are better used combining as you want to make your cards stronger and stronger.

If you have level 1,2,3,4 of a tower and then get rid of 3, then yes, 4 won't work.

Gems are very fair priced if you need to buy any and they transfer over to every new profile you start. ;)

Who here would pay for a gem doubler and how much? Me personally...I would 100% and I'd pay 2.99

I am a sucker for doublers and feel its a great support tool. I buy it in every game. Some games it's kind of a cheat I know but I still do it. In this game I don't see it as a cheat because you just want to buy more cards and combine more. Yeah sure, maybe still a big help but not so much like a game where you use the currency to buy upgrades. You still have the rng monster holding your progress back :)

That's how it seems to work for me.

Maybe it's different on the iPad version? Apart from the first couple of levels, I've only completed levels on novice difficulty and I've got many greens and at least one orange card from a drop (it might be two, but I don't remember for sure).

@shaymon - thank you for the help my friend, i may get to the 5th grade yet
one last question if i may. any recommendations on which option is the best buy? there are 8 buy cards options, do you suggest one over the other? for example: always go for the '3 common offensive cards' or '3 rare cards' is the best buy. and, yes, gem IAP's are very fairly priced.

    thanks again!

Anyone with pro's or con's for this, do let us know -- we basically want any IAP stuff to be completely optional, and not make players feel like they have to do it. So .. yeah, if it'd be something that you guys would like, and feel reasonable about buying, we'd be happy to put it in. On the other hand, if it feels like "slimy developers trying to nickel and dime me," that'd be bad! :)

crap, back the 4th grade...what's a gem doubler?

also @tricket - when you go to Sam's to buy cards is there any significance to the different color card backs? there are groups of 3 cards some with brown backs, some with blue, red, or black. e.g. '3 common cards' for 200 - one card backing is black, the other 2 are red. those colors designate anything?

yikes! just looking and accidentally touched a card stack, INSTA BUY, no confirm purchase....oh well

Usually gem doublers mean the payout has been lowered from default so the gem doubler is pretty much needed, but this is the first game where I've thought that the payout for levels is very good and haven't needed a doubler but adding one would obviously get a few extra pounds, so if the payout of gems isn't lowered then I can't see any bad point against adding a doubler in.
I was going to say it might break the balance but then again you can buy gems anyway so that argument is invalid, the cards are still random after all too.
I'd say probably just do it.

First off, I'm sorry about the insta-buy -- that's one that annoys me, also. It was skipped (along with a bunch of other things) in our last-minute rush to get the game online. It probably won't make the iPhone 1.1 patch, which we're hoping to submit today, but I'll try to make sure to get the behavior in for the patch after that, at least!

For the card backs -- no, at the moment we just pick some random backgrounds to make it look more interesting -- they were starting to all feel the same when we didn't do that. But if it's confusing, we can certainly set them to always be a specific pattern, and not randomize themselves.
