BORED?! To each their own - LOVE planechase mode. It does throw a little more "luck" in than the standard modes, but it sure is exciting having to change your entire strategy everytime the cards change.
I've never played this card game before, although some of my friends did, almost 20 years ago. I picked it up for free on the iPad, and I'm ridiculously hooked. What's cooler, is that my wife is interested too after seeing me play. The fact that the app takes care of some of he automatic elements in your turn will make it much more accessible to her. The upgrade to the full version is a no brainier, since we both have iPads. $10 easy. The real cards are much more expensive, and this looks amazing on the retina display. The one issue I have is that the challenges you get with the full version are very difficult if you're new to the game. They require a more advanced understanding of the card abilities, and how they influence other cards. Many challenges require precise use of specific cards in a specific order, as well as timed events. I tried the first four, and could not complete them without looking up solutions. After I read the solutions, it made sense. Again, some of these might seem easy for veteran players. The regular campaign is much more approachable. My only wish was that they had a "give up" button on the challenges, so the app would walk you through the solution, and explain why it worked. Reading some of the ones online has been very educational. In fact, my entire experience with the App has been very educational - enough that I'm taking the next step and purchasing the 2013 core set. I've also visited some local stores, who have been helpful. Might even play some live games soon. So, I guess the app has done it's job!
Even though they're too hard for most, I don't agree that you should be able to give up and get a walkthrough, at least in-game. They're there to be difficult (hence "challenges"), and it's a lot of fun to be stuck on them for a while. I've been playing since 1995 (although until DotP appeared I'd stopped for some time), and some of them are still tough for me, especially the last one. I strongly recommend playing through the regular campaign to get familiar with the game, then giving them a real shot
Ladies and gentlemen, Announcing the third promo code discovered: FNMDGP This one is not officially announced, it was stumbled upon. So these codes and cards are already in the current code, just either have to wait for each release or start digging! Notable unlocks this time appear to be Royal Assassin for ED, Vorapede for PI and Goblin War Strike for GG. Wizards Jon, not sure if I should be sharing these codes with the rest of the TA Magic community, I just figure it keeps the excitement going
Hi, I was some days not online ... could somebody please posts all codes which are online up to now? Thanks a lot.
Well, I sort of agree. My problem is, as a new player, it's not obvious that these are just really hard. After I unlocked the full game, these became available so I gave them a try. After not even getting the first one, then the second, I started thinking, wow, this game might be too complex for me. After some research I found that they are in fact very difficult, not just for new players but existing ones as well. I felt much better about it, and kept playing the main campaign, confident - as you said - that I might be able to complete them once I get a better understanding of the cards. The issue I think is that new players might get turned off of the game early because of this. There's no notice saying that these are advanced challenges, and not for new players. And as a new player, I'd appreciate an even more indepth help system to help me get there. The game is great about telling me I can't play a certain card on the game field or another card, but it doesn't tell me why. That would be fantastic. With the challenges, I'd love for the game to walk me through a solution, or give me some hints if I'm truly frustrated. If that means I sacrifice an achievement, so be it. I just want to learn.
Yeah..for all the talk about this game being beginner friendly, as someone new to Magic as well, it's pretty confusing at times. One sign is how a lot of beginners like me find things not working as we expect so we think of it as a bug at first. Skimming at one of the articles linked a few pages back to a Wizards article regarding rule changes/modifications..seems the designers that there's enough of the rules that are confusing enough, even to some people who's played Magic for a little while. And even reading somewhere about during duels, people debate on the meaning of the rules. But it's good that the digital version of the game enforces the rules so everyone can eventually learn them. Maybe for the encounters, Wizards can implement hint system like the Professor Layton games (on the Nintendo DS) and have 3 levels of hints, with the last hint almost basically stepping through the solution?
The ones I've seen so far are: Go into the Store, then click the M button to enter the code. KWPMZW WMKFGC
So there are four Codes now: FNMDGP KWPMZW WMKFGC MWTMJP Please copy the list with every new Code! Thanks a lot to all!
Here's a link to the codes from Wizards forums you can bookmark: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/29193605/Promotional_Unlock_Cards_List Forgive me for asking a dumb noob question... Is there a yearly release of the physical game? And what's the difference between them. I guess I was assuming while the rules may vary, the cards are new. But when reading here or on the Magic forum, sounds like most of the cards already exist. So are the yearly releases just tweaks to the existing cards or bundles in addition to rules modification? Haha..sorry for the dumb noob questions.
Thanks, was just getting ready to post that link! That thread also posts what cards will be unlocked as the codes continue to be discovered. I'm already thinking about how to tune my decks when all 10 are released. Some really decent additions also....running x2 Natural Orders in the AW deck will be just insane
The yearly release advances the story, brings new cards and - for Standard format (tournament play) - introduces a new set and makes an older set illegal. See Magic formats. The WoTC website is a fantastic - and official - resource for all things MTG. Read the 'New Player Starter FAQ' for a veritable gold-mine of information which will help cement your knowledge. To answer an earlier question of yours, MTG is a complex game (although not as complex as it once was) because of the sheer variety of cards, combinations and effects. That's the appeal for the vast majority of plays i.e. deck construction. You can play off-line using physical cards or play online purchasing 'virtual' cards (that you can obtain physical versions of virtual ones which you own). Depending on what draws you to the game, and how competitive you wish to be, you can buy sets, boosters or individual cards (secondary market). The latter is the most cost effective when constructing decks. Whilst the sets and boosters are good for getting lots of cards (and the odd 'surprise' i.e. rare), they are not so good for deck construction. If you like the story and the art work (which many do), then go ahead. Addendum: remember that when reading the 'New Player Starter FAQ', the rules may now be different i.e. we're in a Magic 2010 world - not 6th ed. What does that mean? Biggest rule change is that the combat stack i.e. spell resolution, no longer exists during the combat damage assignment step. The last chance to cast for both players, before damage assignment, is during the 'Announce Blockers' step.
The code I quoted above is not working. Can any one help out? I am a member of DotP wizards forum. I usually go there, but the site is not working right now for some reason.
Maybe you already entered the code? The response for an invalid code and one you entered already is the same. To find out, look at your decks and see the number of cards unlocked in each deck; If it says something like 34/34 or 4/34 you have unlocked all four codes. Each code increases the number on the right by 1... with no codes it would be 30.
