I think the condition is a combination of reading but not comprehending. Or, in some cases, reading but not mentally processing the information.

You can read the rules / cards as much as you like, but I've always found that there is no finer instructive method than a humbling lesson :p Sadly, I speak from experience ..

    Excellent link, Plynx.

One of my major bugbears regarding MTG - besides the cost to actually play, although the pauper format is a really cool idea - is the amount of errata and confusing terminology. I wholeheartedly support the use of fixed and consistent terminology that has clear and precise meaning. Example: combat phase.

"If you want to activate regeneration abilities, cast damage prevention spells, pump your creature's toughness, or do any other kinds of combat tricks, you now need to do so during the declare blockers step. At that time, combat is deterministic enough to give you a good idea of what's coming. You'll be able to tell whether you need to regenerate your blocker, for example"

That said, not sure how I feel about the changes to combat. I would need to play using 6th. ed rule-set and then play using Magic 2010 Rule Changes. Hell! I think I originally tried to learn using 5th. ed rules. No using crying over spilt milk.

I casually became interested in MTG around 1997 and have physical cards from 5th ed. Mirage and Visions; hence I need to 'unlearn' terminology that wasn't particularly clear then! Reading the Magic 2010 Rule Changes really cements my understanding. Although, I do feel nostalgia when people discuss the old skool Sligh decks, Maro-Geddon, etc.

    Cheers!

Jools, why are you so arrogant?

Lot s of people play and are beginners like me. And just miss reading or understanding what is written.

Jools has been consistently helpful to people who don't understand the rules or how cards work. He's just expressing that he has a pet peeve of people who don't take the time to learn what the cards do (Even in that post he explained something which a lot of people might find surprising or unclear; a purely helpful gesture). I don't see any arrogance in that. It's bound to be very frustrating as someone who has invested a lot of time and mental energy into learning all of these things, and then constantly see people complaining about bugs in the game because they don't understand how the game mechanics interact.

It's not an arrogant attitude, it's giving advice to some people who still insist to play and lost without even understanding what's really happening on the table.

Maybe some may see this as being arrogant, but the fact that until now I've experienced 5/6 wins because of this Phage "surprise" simply put me in a situation where I'm willing to help newbie and newcomers (and everyone who thinks text on mtg cards are mostly for flavor reason). Of course, as Riotgirl written, sometime there are people which isn't in this case, and most of times it's a matter of milliseconds of poor attention or difficult to properly assimilate ruling. It happens, btw...

There were lots of people complaining about "bugs" here in the very first days, while was clearly a matter of poor knowledge of mtg rulings. Of course I'm quite an aficionado, must admit sometime I may result quite direct (or worse, harsh), but simply I wished to make a helpful clarification about that specific Phage card ruling. I use twisted ways to say something, better to avoid doing that next time. My excuses if anyone's offended.

EDIT: thanks for your kind answer TheSporkWithin, really appreciate that (I was writing while you were posting lol!).

    This

"I've won two matches with an error like this, probably two incredibly unaware newbies (let's not say how I usually call people like this... Personally I hate people who pretend to play without reading/knowing written things on cards, not mentioning rules), so be warned..."

    Is even more than arrogant.

Are you sure??? Strange thing, to not quote the remaining following text... Never strip a sentence from his whole context, if this is NOT ALL what I was saying. And I think when I write. Even when using periods. Better to quote properly, before saying something with a completely personal opinion and in my case not really based on what I was saying entirely, since we're missing some important text, am I right? No flame intended, but at least don't quote my posts without my permission, if you're planning to strip certain sentences in order to change the whole context and message I was initially sending to people.

Tried to be helpful, admitted maybe I wrote a certain helping message in a twisted way, written my apologies if anyone's offended. But don't ever try to give your interpretation on what I wrote, this is not what you're entitled until you don't read (and quote) the whole statement. Peace and I'm done with this.

I think IRL beginners (in a casual play situation, of course) would probably be given the opportunity to take back their move after doing something like killing themselves with Phage. In that sense Duels 2013 is a little unforgiving.

Still, MtG is a game where you're supposed to slow down and think about your strategy... and yes, read the cards. If you lose because you didn't pay attention, that's entirely your fault. I mean, come on. If the cards are hard to understand, why do so many players know exactly what they do? Are they way smarter than you... or were you just careless? That's your call.

I'd like to lean toward careless in most cases :)

Tried Planechase, conceded during the game because I was bored rigid. 4 player multi-player, yes! Idiotic dice rolling, no!

Good that it is there as a variant for players. Not for me.

1 more card to unlock for the basic decks, then I'll upgrade.

  12. Before I unlock the full game, I want to ask if anyone else is having the following issues:

    - How do you view exiled cards?
    - When I try to discard cards from my hand by flicking them up, they never seem to stay in the white area. If I put them in the top-right of the white area, they stay, but if I move another card in, the previous card moves back to my hand! This is a huge issue with the blue decks and Planechase, wherein there are several 'draw a card' cards. How the heck do I discard cards from hand in this case?
    - How do I take back an attacker or blocker?

Thanks for the tips on unlocking the cards. But where do I see them or which ones are they? I cannot find them unfortunately.

They put them in your decks already. You have to go to deck manager screen and look at each deck. There are different symbol on the card type line where the "D13" should be.

    - How do you view exiled cards?

For some cards, the exiled card goes underneath the exiling card. Panoptic Mirror, Oblivion Ring, Fiend Hunter and the like do this. Others do not, they put them in the exile zone with no obvious way of getting them back, or if they would come back at the end of the turn, they just do not display and AFAIK there is no way to view those.

This confused me too and I would call it a user interface error/flaw. When you must discard multiple cards, putting them into the white zone selects the card for eventual discard but there is no visual indication that this has happened. What you need to do is put more cards there so as to have finished indicating which cards you want to discard, and then it discards them all at once.

    - How do I take back an attacker or blocker?

A simple tap does the trick. Single taps register very slowly in this game, due to the conflation with double tap. There is no visual indication that your single tap has done anything until a short while later.

I hope they improve on their UI/UX in the future, but I am grateful for the almost full-featured port.

    Here's another code: KWPMZW
This unlocks yet another card for each of the decks, bringing it to a total of two so far!
Highlights include Lightning Bolt for Chandra, Squadron Hawk for Odric and Vindicate for exalted.

Sounds like more promotional codes will be released over the coming days :)

Wow!!! Cool, two promotional unlock codes, two extra cards (of ten!!!) for each deck in just a few hours! Thank you again for sharing this, Emos!

As you suggested previously, I'm now constantly checking the D13 official forum at WotC website... I've read also there will probably a red/black Rakdos deck (with FOUR Demigod of Revenge :D) among new decks in a future DLC... Can't wait for this coming...!

    Thanks!

Still not sure if Squadron Hawk is worth playing without all 4...
