The decks take quite a lot of play to unlock fully - each deck (seems like there's about 20?) requires 30 wins to completely unlock all the cards. But I think that's a big part of the fun of it - if they were all unlocked from the get-go, there would be much less incentive to play all the various opponents, etc. If you want to skip all that, you can unlock individual decks for a buck or two.
What's the best starting deck to use without the IAP? Are they all good in their own way? I've been using green.
They're all quite strong, but favor entirely different strategies and approaches. Experiment and decide what you like best!
There are 10 decks in total with only one multi-colored deck (black & white). I unlocked them all in a day,but to unlock all cards and truly understand each deck will take quite some time. You unlock a deck by playing an opponent, and by winning with a deck you unlock a card for that deck. With 30 cards to unlock for each deck you need 300 wins to unlock all cards. Unlocking decks wasn't that hard for me,i played mostly white and green while unlocking. I got some experience with magic so i'm not sure how hard it is for newcomers.
I find it hard to believe that anyone can unlock all the cards and decks through game play in one day. The math doesn't add up. Here is my point; 10 decks x 30 cards per deck = 300 cards to unlock. If each game won will only unlock one card then 300 games won is needed to unlock all cards. 300 games won / 24 hours in a day = 12.5 games won per hour or one game won every 4.8 minutes. Any lost games will eat into this time making it even shorter. Editing decks with cards won will also make this time shorter. This to me seems highly impossible to do.
I unlocked all decks in a day,not all cards. Not by a long shot. Reading back i understand this was not clear and sounding like a shmug. I unlocked 23 cards, just checked.
Ok... That clears things up. I should have read it a bit closer. Thinking about it, I guess if you only played one deck vs the campaign to unlock all of the decks and then played only the first encounter with the hawks over and over again without ever editing and hitting the play again button you might be able to do it. That sure would be boring as hell. I may have to try this with one deck just to see if is possible.
What's the rarity of color classes? Is it: Black = common. Silver = uncommon. Gold = rare. There seem to be legend cards too. What color are those? Darker gold? They also show you a character card of the opponent you are fighting in the campaign. Is this a card that the AI is using on you during the game or just a preview of that opponent's actual card in the 'cardboard' Magic game? Like an incentive to buy the actual game?
AFAIK, cards with a purple glow signify instants that you could play if you stopped the clock, but they're purple and not orange because you haven't stopped the clock yet. I have also seen it highlight the last card I "focused" on by touching it. IIRC, that highlight is white/blue.
Yes, the purplish white is the last card selected. If it's in your hand it will be magnified. Any instant cards which you are able to play have a dark blue aura during any phase in which they are eligible to be played; the color is the same color the hourglass changes to when you tap it to give you time to play instants, so it's pretty logically connected there. Yes, those are the rarities. There's also "mythic rare" which is the reddish golden color. They basically break down to how many of each type of card you get from boosters: 11 common, 3 uncommon, and 1 rare in each 15 card booster pack, one out of every eight boosters will have its rare card replaced by a mythic rare. The character cards are something called "planeswalker cards." I'm not entirely sure how they function, as I stopped playing Magic before they were introduced, but I think they're just really special creatures which have unique properties. They're not usable in this game, but perhaps will show up in later DLC; they're just a nice reminder that these characters exist within the larger world of Magic lore, and stuff like that.
Same card over and over? So I have been hitting some of the encounters and they play 1 card over and over.....last i recall MTG had a limit of 4 cards of the same name. I cannot pass the one dbag encounter that makes you discard a card from hand and library. He just plays that over and over and over and I have nothing that can stop it. This is a tad bit unfair to be able to play 40 of the same card.
Encounters have stacked decks and play their cards in a set pattern; they're more like puzzles and ways to test decks against really insane situations. It says this the first time you do one.
As ByronBulb already stated, it is the incentive to keep dueling as the game hands these extra cards out to you 1-2 at a time. Often they're no more than an extra of a card you already have in your deck (so now you could have 2 Skeletons of Doomspire in your deck). What's fun, though, is these cards are awarded for ANY win with the deck! So if you just want to stick to online battles or replaying some early campaign duelist over and over again, go for it.
Yeah, these are completely surreal Magic Skill Drills. Can your deck handle a seemingly endless supply of flying weenies? How about against an army of Tims (at least there are some who call him that)?
Rarity colors: black-common, silver-uncommon, gold-rare, copper-mythic rare The card shown before starting "boss" match is simply one of possible correspondent Planeswalker card. (for example, Jace Beleren has three different planeswalker cards, named "Jace Beleren", "Jace, Memory Adept" and "Jace, Mind Sculptor" - and that's also a reminder about how much important is paying attention to specific card names, since all of them are the same exactly thing, but each with his distinctive different effects and rulings) Unfortunately, Magic 2013 doesn't feature planeswalker card type into play and like the previous M2012 use them like a main graphical theme for game and for story purposes. Card types in Magic: Artifacts, Lands, Instants, Sorceries, Creatures, Enchantments, Planeswalker. A Tarmogoyf dream, of course... (Everyone may search "Tarmogoyf" easily googling or at WotC Gatherer) EDIT: about Planeswalkers, you may see them like an ally which when summoned fights supporting you with some of his very cool (sometime devastating) skills. They're recent (from Lorwyn set, pair of years ago first appearance) and introduced new ways to make interesting deckbuilds and strategies.
Ahhh Tim! I remember him fondly, back when he was a blue Prodigal Sorceror back in the earlier editions I have been out of the Magic scene for over a decade so there are quite a few new abilities and terms that I need to catch up with.
Thanks for the help everyone. I purchased the full unlock and have already unlocked a couple extra decks and a card or two in each. I haven't played since Ice Age and 4th edition, so some of the new rules and cards take some getting used to, but overall I am having a blast and have a lot more to go. More than worth the $10.
So your complaint is that you can't reach all the buttons in the game with the same hand you're holding the iPad with? Really? Even if they moved everything they could to the right side, you would still need to reach the left side of the screen some times just to tap cards, so this really seems like an odd complaint.
Same experience with me. It makes me want to go dust off my old Magic cards I haven't seen in over a decade.
