To be really honest, Encounters aren't a whole bad idea. They're much useful to you if you want to test your deck against very specific situations and mechanics. They're useful to finetune your own deck. This is quite true for unexperienced people, though Encounters aren't the best tech-teaching way, but help greatly in understanding where you are weak with a certain deck. With 30 extra cards for each deck to unlock, it's easy to go with some totally crappy concept (I mean, without any proper "tournament consistency") and certain Encounters will clearly show you why. Of course, for any experienced M:tG players they may result in a laughing experience. After all, they're fully optional... ^^ Another cool thing that Encounters provide: probably the fastest way to unlock extra cards. Provided you know how to do proper pairings, you may unlock all extra cards of a certain deck in a flash. Playing against AI or people of course will do the same (and it's way more fun!!!), but in case you need to speedup the unlock process... I love this game so much. It's a milestone of programming and state of the art of graphical and conceptual rendition... And Magic it is not for all people, it is not for players who just like "to play the most powerful card on table": this game features neat strategies and zillions of different ways (from champion to master of crap) to overcome opponents, way more than a poker game or many of the online card based games. Until now, everything is perfectly working and is in proper place. NOTE: I've read somewhere here about someone having problem to discard land cards. Well, there are no problems: when I'm required to discard only one card, i may choose perfectly and discard one land. When I have to discard more than one cards, provided I have a decent amount of lands already in play, game pre-select my lands among any other card I choose to discard. On top of that, if I decide to keep these pre-selected lands, I must simply choose another card with the same swipe-to-up move. Blocking works perfectly, I often use the swipe to pair defender-attacker. I've noticed, instead, there are way more situation arising that prevents certain block (equipment and enchantments - doublecheck cards in play, trust me... This app isn't bugged!), so this will lead certain unaware people to easily say "heck, game won't let me block this, is it a bug?". For everyone which state game may probably lead you to random loss while you're near win, remember that in Magic you may lose also when you're required to draw a card and you have zero cards in your grimoire. Monoblue Jace deck is heavily structured around this pattern. And I have not seen any Phage coming... Nor I have seen any Platinum Angel until now... Otherwise, there will be way more people which may discover what someone may name "strange things or maybe a bug...?". Kudos to developers, keep up the good job, the only one true complain I have is the mandatory Gamecenter integration/linking feature: when I cannot access GC (have two ipads, wifi only version), I lost everything saved until I may login and stay connected. That's a poor move, hope there will be a chance to have an internal savegame option, at least to have all of my unlocked cards and decks available for some AI random matches without the annoying prerequisite of staying connected. Ipad-to-Ipad matches feature via wifi would be a massive gift for me eheheh!
That's what I was saying in the previous post... Do a better reading of cards in play, Magic isn't a simple game with colored and funny cards: text and specific wordings counts in a critical way here. You're talking about the Sentry Spider most probably... It has "Reach" skill, AND another one cool skill (usually seen on many white creatures), that's "Vigilance". Everybody may check this useful link... Doublecheck, maybe? ^^ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Magic:_The_Gathering_keywords
Are there anywhere the full rules? I am pretty sure this and many other things are neither mentioned in the help screens nor the tutorial. I also don't get the deck builder. So I unlocked three cards. Okay, and what now? I can swipe three cards from the lower half of the screen to the upper half, but for what?
Yeah, when I initially heard the fun of dueling against a stacked deck I thought it sounded very boring and cheesy...but now having played through a few I like how they're interactive Magic Skill Drills to test your deck against certain common combos. This is a LOT more fun than those stupid Challenges where you need to find the ONE exact solution. In these Encounters you are free to find your own solution to the nasty gimmick being thrown at you.
Check the card writing. This is probably the card: Vigilance prevents it from being tapped after making a move.
This was one of my toughest to learn lessons from Magic and other similar collectible card games which was simply, "Less is More". Ideally, at least in most cases, you want to keep your deck to 60 cards so that you can be assured any card you need will show up as soon as possible if you don't have it in your hand already. In this game, by default, every new unlocked card is automatically added to your deck meaning, if you never visit your deck manage you'll have some 90+ card deck (not sure how much land the game will automatically add in for you). I'm sure some of the MtG pros can explain the reasons behind keeping your deck slim as well as ideal balances of cards to shoot for.
That's definitely it. Thank you. I wish that there was a glossary that new players like me could look at to find those terms in the game. Just seeing vigilance doesn't mean anything to me as a new player.
It's hard not to sound smug when you're stating the obvious and people just don't seem to understand it. I just mentioned once that the price was too high for me right now. I never complained or stated any dogma. It was only when people started talking nonsense about games deserving to have a high price even if that means making less money that I started arguing. I have no source for a statement I never made. I've gone out of my way to stress over and over again that I don't know whether being cheap would make more money - and over and over again you've ignored me.
Thanks. I'm beginning to see that. Unfortunately people seem determined to argue against a point I'm not making.
Yay - I've never been called a troll before! I have? So far the only things I've been asked to prove are things I never said in the first place.
Please stop with all this pricing ridiculousness. We have a dedicated thread for the eternal debate of whether or not video games are worth more than a can of Arizona Iced Tea.
If there is a term or a move that you don't understand on a card it is normally listed in the cards more info section. Bring up the card with a double tab, click on the more info button to the right and then it should detail the attributes the card has.
More bugs: playing the encounter with the endless green creatures that double their tokens every turn and then get trample over ten. I used blue's 'replicate' on an 8/8 creature and nothing happened. It did not create a duplicate. There was also a glitch at the start where there was a background to the game, a scenic setting, but no game board visible except for the proceed button. I could hear the sounds but not play it.
Dinosaur iPad? Anyone bothering to try this on a First Gen iPad? How does it play there? Or should I just pray to the gods for a new iPad some day? AA
The app is free, but I bought the Premium Unlock and then started to play almost everything at random just for some fun testing. Every match I win with a certain deck, game unlocks me one extra card (every single deck has 30 extra cards to unlock). I've played some multiplayer, won some matches, unlocked some card... Then played some Campaign, unlocked some decks and every time I won, my active deck received one extra card unlock. In Deckbuilder I may finetune any of my deck (of course, only by adding/swapping/subtracting cards until the legal tournament minimum of 60 cards), having also the chance to know what are locked extra cards (they stay grayed until you unlock them). Magic 2013 has proper tutorial about game interface and certain creature skills / spells effects. But due to his incredible longevity (game was born in 1993 and has more than 10000 single different cards printed, most of them introducing major rules modifications), it is suggested to 1) pay attention wisely on single card text (at least until you figured correctly their rulings and you become accustomed to his typycal sinergies, like black removals + resurrection/zombification spells to just say one) and 2) wandering online to proper Magic websites (the official one of Wizards of the Coast is enough for all purposes). And as a third point, Magic has a vastly ruling culture that can be overwhelming on first impact for unexperienced people, so a little patience and some online reading/documentation is mandatory for total newbie players. Maybe one good thing is to go to local Magic shop (they often do tournaments and are always open to help people learning game - at least here in Italy) and make some friendship and chat and let other people to briefly explain you some cool things about rules and whatsnot etc... I may compare this Magic app to the Granturismo5 videogame on Playstation3: both are beautiful games, maybe really intriguing for some people. But everybody must take their proper time to learn how to drive (and then, how to play) to fully appreciate every aspect of game. Then, time to rock n' shock opponents will naturally and eventually come. My suggestion: learn interface, do some basic reading of rules, check in Deckbuilder every single deck, figure wordings that sound completely unknown then do some search, maybe at Gatherer in Wizards of the Coast website. There may be some glossary in the app, actually I haven't checked so much carefully (I play Magic since start, was quite natural to skip everything and going directly to some fights lol!). Also, Youtube may have various introductory videos about rulings, who knows, better to check here also...? ^^
I have played about 2 hours of it on my First Gen iPad. I have not run into any issues yet, I do try to make sure that it is the only app running. It has been very smooth and I am quite happy!
It will be useful if you mention exact card names. In magic you may sometime choose certain illegal target, and a replicate spell (depends on what spell we're talking, and what card is targeted) will resolve in nothing. I had a similar glitch you mentioned on my ipad1 while starting a multiplayer match (forced to kill app and then restart). Not sure if it's the same thing, on my ipad2 game's running smoothly except for some annoying Gamecenter known problems while searching for automatch. But this happens also in various other multiplayer apps, everybody already knows that GC suck sometime... I use some patience, then ready to go again, that's all.
