Still on the fence, my best RPGs are Secret of Mana and Zelda, so this should appeal to me as well...
You guys clearly have the talent to pull it off, so I'm already anticipating your next title. Shame about the Metroidvania style not being too hot for you though. It's my favorite game structure and I would love to see a game like that on iOS made by a talented developer. I hope you eventually reconsider it though, after all it's hard to gauge the sales potential of this kind of game when there's barely any quality title at all on the store (can you even name one? I honestly don't remember). Also, it's not like people are put off by the Metroidvania style. I think that if you have appealing visuals and the quality to get the word mouth to mouth, the sales will come. After all let's face it, the average consumer buys based on visuals and ratings. Well, and the name of the studio, and yours is recognizable. There's also the advantage of playing into a barely explored niche. There's a nice piece of pie to be gained there I'm sure.
That is what I am thinking. Or consequential quests, such as you did this therefore this or that will happen (even as simple as getting more favorable more quests in one direction or another) -- or the attitudes of NPCs change; ex: help the farmer kill the wolves that are taking his chickens and you can hunt down livestock, in other farms as well (word spreads) without getting punished or chased off. Good versus evil is always an option to -- kill a bunch of civilization in a town and they may hate you or attack you but the bad guys may be offering you quests for their own purposes. These are just examples of course. One thing in most RPGs that I always get annoyed with is that good always gets a better deal than evil - better quests, better treatment, pick ups, etc. Would like to see an RPG where evil gets a decent fair share of the game's content, doesn't hurt your primary goals, yet alters the gameplay a bit -- you might scare off townsfolk but you'll find the hoodlum areas are friendly -- perhaps even turn it around where there are multiple bosses in each final map battle, and depending on how good or evil you are (shown in a scale) you might be fighting the bad or good one alongside the other boss. Just some random thoughts there. Still going to play and finish the game. I am waiting for you first update to continue so I can play my own music. I recommend everyone everyone buy the game, no matter what the rant or rave just to support such an involved developer.
There's been a few decently covered Metroidvanias on the app store, but all three involved a character that moved by flying/swimming. They also did terribly. I'm not sure how Robot Wants Kitty did, which is kind of a mini-Metroidvania. Also the damn vertical screen size. If we made a Metroidvania of the sort we want to (with a grappling hook) we'd probably have to make it iPad only, just for the better vertical screen ratio (4:3 instead of 3:2). Maybe in the far, far future, if we could make a simultaneous PC version. I'm wondering how Lost Mars will do, a Metroidvania by the Spider guys. Probably fairly well.
Awesome Game! Stats Question. First, I am really enjoying this game. I'm still early on, but the first hour has been great. Second, how is everyone handling their stats? And is there a maximum value for each stat? I was thinking of keeping my stats about even, but I'm wondering if I should be focusing on a certain one. Last, is there any chance of getting a screen fill option in a future update?
I'm starting the Kepa for President campaign! This is the game I've always wished for. Not a KRaPG. Thank you Kepa! And to those on the fence... uh... hello?
Lovng the game even Asian my iPad, but .... I took all iap and I equipped, but when I start a new game I see that my fire sword and vest are removed and I am stuck with the basic robe and the staff. Why???
The max level is 75 and the max for each stat is 25, so if you play long enough, eventually you'll get all of them. It's just a matter of how you want to be specced on the way there. Getting new equipment is part of the story of the very first level, so your equipment always defaults to those, even if you go back and replay it. You can use the inferno set for any other level though. Edit: Never mind, Kepa explained that it was a mistake.
Woops, the tutorial reverts you to your basic equipment right now. Was a design mistake. It's fixed in the quick update we submitted yesterday. For now you can just go into wardrobe after that tutorial level is over and re-equip them.
That was going to be in the first content update. Considering doing it sooner as a seperate mini-update, depending on how long this update takes to hit the App Store.
@Kepa For the map screen on the iPad, you could try a simple decorative frame. Whatever you decide to try for your next a-rpg, juste remember, please, no grinding, no fetch quests and no obscure riddles that require the player to put a piece of cloth under a UV light to decipher some obscure elvish dialect. About Metroidvania's: Glowfish probably didn't do too bad, and it's a sort of proto of the genre. Aquaria's coming soon too. Personally, I prefer tightly designed, purposeful levels to huge spaghetti mazes. Super Metroid and PSX Castlevania were fun in their time, but I've had enough of it.
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that. I've tried oh so hard to play all the different KRPGs on the App Store but I've always detested them. They're all so samey. Generic story, bad translation and tons of grinding. This game, on the other hand, is perfect. Love it. Keep up the good work.
Oh, wow. Never heard of this Glowfish, so I checked out. Looks pretty good! Are you sure it's Metroidvania like though? From the description it's a level based platform. And yeah, Aquaria is coming. That game is amazing and I recommend to anyone with an iPad.
+1 Honestly, I see them as really subpar versions of their J counterparts. In response to your Twitter poll: The third level in the Forest is harder, yes, but what really surprised me was the length of the level. I swear it's like three times longer than any of the previous ones. There was some part where I had to backtrack to clear an area I missed, and it took forever to return all the way back, and then to go forward again to the end of the level.
Finally got to play the game! I feel kind of left out, 'cause I had to wait a bit before buying. This game is AMAZING. (Now to read the last 10 pages of the thread quickly to see what I missed while at school...)
