Glad to hear that the gf loves your gift. Best thing in the world for a guy is a happy lady by his side, IMHO. Unless he swings the other way, of course...but regardless a happy significant other of any persuasion makes for a happy person.

Probably a good idea. Although, honestly, most mac refreshes happen in the spring/early summer months, iirc. Regardless I think you'll be happy with your purchase, especially since you dig your gf's macbook.

There are still 3 Windows-based computers in the house :p

It's now Windows 3, Mac 2, unless you count my iPod Touch then it's equal :)

Guys, I am sorry for off-topic, but this thread seem to be the most suitable to ask my question:

I am going to buy iMac. But I can't decide between iMac or MacBook.
I would use it at home only (as portable computer I have iPod touch). I care about websurfing and video conferences.
I have iMac 23' at school and I love it (despite it's OS is not upgraded to Leopard yet): it has great design, appleish solutions, comfortable keyboard and mouse and wonderful White, pure colour.
On the other hand I have never had MacBook in my hands: what is better then? iAmc or MacBook? What adventages has MacBook, except mobility?

Of course the most I would love to buy iMac 27' and then I wouldn't ask at all, but it's price is shocking.

Thanks for all advice in advance!

I'll be using my MacBook at home mostly, but I still find it hard going back to desktop computers these days. It seems so old-fashioned being stuck to a chair at a desk when you could be relaxing on the sofa or in bed, plus it's just easier to keep working while you move about the house. For the websurfing and video conferences it sounds like both choices would suit you just fine, but I'm not sure if the iMac has any huge advantages over MacBooks 'cause I didn't look into them.

Jarek, like MedianGTX says MacBook might slip into your lifestyle easier than iMac. Although we personally upgraded from a mac mini to an iMac, my wife uses the 12" PowerBook more because she can tend to our baby easier from the sofa with a laptop beside her. However, the 24" screen is fab, and damn useful for seeing loads of photos in iPhoto at once.

Bottom line I'd say is. If you have firm ideas of what you want it to do, and involves loads of windows or apps open at once, go for iMac: bigger resolution to see more, more power, and bigger hard disk. If you really don't know yet or just casual surfing like you mentioned, I'd vote for MacBook. Plus, if you have any problems, it's always easier to tote a MacBook around to the Genius Bar than an iMac!!! :p it just grants you extra flexibility in covering your needs. Don't forget to take advantage of the tutorial classes that most apple stores host regularly to get you upto speed, again, bringing MacBook along helps.

Good luck to your decision, and congrats to MidianGTX on your choice! Let us know if you need help. :)

As much as I am a pc gamer these days ask yourself this:

Do you want to play MMORPG's (Warcraft, Star Trek Online, Everquest, Eve Online, etc..) or Strategy Games (Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, etc..)? Do you HAVE to have a mouse for shooters?

If the answer to those is no then just stick with consoles. Most single player (other than The Witcher which is pretty awesome) RPG's, shooters, etc.. are multiplatform and work just as well on console (sometimes better due to poor PC ports). Myself though I really enjoy MMO's and RTS games so I'll stick to having a nice big desktop pc.

With that said though you can get a lot of gaming pc for your buck if you build it yourself or get a local shop to put it together for you. I'd go that route and grab a cheaper netbook.

Thank You guys for swift replies.
I love iMac design, but I have never seen "applish" MacBook. I guess all of them look like standard laptops.

Can You advice my any good-looking, well-packed MacBook? It is hard to choice between those available in Poland - most of them are old fashioned and I can't see the difference between them.

Sorry for such newbie questions. All my life I was sticked to Windows, in the moment I got iPod touch I have changed my preferences extremaly.

It's basically just MacBook (http://www.apple.com/pl/macbook/) or MacBook Pro (http://www.apple.com/pl/macbookpro/).

In my opinion the lowest MacBook Pro (13") is too similar to the standard MacBook to really be worth the extra money. So really you just have to decide if you want the regular MacBook, or the MacBook Pro 15"/17".

From what you said earlier it doesn't sound like you need loads of extra power, so the obvious choice would be the MacBook in the first link.

Yes I think I grew out of games... except those for my iPod of course :)

Thank You for all advice given. If only I gathered enough amount of money - I will go for MacBook white. And have another Apple at home :)

Here is something I am thinking about. Despite it is auction only, I hope ending price won't be that high.
Current is about 520$ USD. But it is used, I can't afford brand new as it costs over 1320$. If I had a job...:/

The MacBook in that link a slightly older model. You still get that Apple quality obviously, but the newer one has a few nice upgrades. Maybe you could look around for a refurbished one? They're a few hundred cheaper and you still get a warranty, it's easier to trust something when it comes straight from Apple.

The problem is, that all models available in Poland are older.
And anything, directly from Apple reseller, is not available in suitable price.
Unfortunately, because of disctance between Europa and USA, I can't avoid overpaying.

But I wan't to say good-bye to Windows and say hello to Mac OS :)

I didn't know it was so tough to get one over there, Amazon really need to set up shop in Poland too. Have you tried eBay? I saw a couple of good deals on there the other day, there should be a few that ship to the EU, just beware of scammers.

Theoretically we have large online store called Allegro. It's where my link came from: the most You spare when You buy used hardware. But when it goss about new models - prices are high as everywhere.
Also, I have noticed that all this matter is about Applle devices only. Casual laptops from companies like Dell or Acer are available everywhere and at quite reasonable prices.
Unfortunately, most of them are eqipped wtb Windows Vista or 7 which I am just tired of.
I need simplicity and effectivity, which come from Apple hardware for sure.
Apple means something elite here: it's products are spotted as sign of luxury and proffesionalism.
Actually, all this has changed just after iPhone premier - then all resellers boosted prices up because Apple is "on top".
And this is why I want to move abroad in the future- to avoid such problems and obstacles just when I wish to buy good laptop.

I think its funny how everyone wants to run Windows on their Macs, but no one in their right mind wants to run OSX on their PC's.

    Food for thought.

Enjoy paying at least $500 dollars more for a fashion statement though.

Step 1: Prepare to be owned.

    Step 2: Google "hackintosh".

Step 3. Wallow in putrid humiliation of your now being owned.

How witty. However note my choice of "In their right mind".

It is honestly very sad to me that Apple has become exactly what they were marketing against in their 1984 ad.
