Arrrgh ! Probably why i was getting totally lost and frustrated where this town was ! I'll try again ! I still would make the game easier, eg a shop in the initial location to buy food. I wish the whole tiredness factor would go where you just die despite exploring lots. Was that in the original games ? My problem was i didnt have enough gold to get any food once i reached that town, i was too weak after battles and i died ! I think for new users this might put people off as its quite difficult. If you want to sell a lot i would 'dumb' it down a bit at the start so its easier to get into
Hey thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry if I made it too tough at first -- it was something I was unsure about. Yes the initial difficulty is quite high -- kind of a nod to the original game but maybe too much so. I will probably tweak it based on the initial round of feedback. It's true that the town lies SE of the sign, but you have to walk SW to get there. My guess is most people may cross that bridge and then keep going south rather than walking to the right. Also if you talk to the King's assistant now, she gives you some directions to Yeorke. Here is the map:
Just had a go. Didnt manage to get 30 gold on my way to the town, got to the town but dont have enough money for food ! Left the town to have some battles, now i'm too weak and need food or i'll die ! Catch 22 ! Yeah i think a 'bit' easier at the start, just a drop in food prices in that shop would help. Its a shame as the world looks huge, i just want to explore it !!
Yeah maybe a drop in the food prices or just starting with more food? I need to fix that GameCenter thing, so maybe I will go ahead and send in a small update to address it. Sucks that it takes ~10 days to get an update through...
Hey I'm about to put some promo codes up over on the promo code forum. Please don't ask for them here, as that is against the forum rules
Sorry, I didn't realize people were having problems finding Yorke, forum member eksaint did post a small map on page 8 showing Yorke and with some tips that are very useful getting started, it's what helped me get past the first difficulty hurdle of hunger. The next hurdle is the first dungeon, again there are tips on this on page 8.
I played Ultima I - IV when they first came out, and they were pretty brutal at the beginning as I recall. Now I've found the town, completed the quest for the king, and have stockpiled close to 300 food. I'm working my way toward a better weapon before heading to the cave. I'll probably need to heal at least once more before I get to that point. For me, at this moment, the hardest part of the game so far was finding the first town. I still think tossing in an overpriced food stall in the castle where you can by 30 "road snacks" for 20 gold would help ease the frustration of those who keep dying from hunger. Also, as I recall from at least one of the Ultimas (I need to dig them out and play them again), you could talk to Lord British and be healed for free up until you hit level 5 (or maybe it was 3). For anyone feeling this is too hard, give Ultima I or II a shot. I see what you mean about the sign. It's tricky though. I know the path you have to take is SW from the sign, but since there isn't a road, I took it as "head generally to the southwest from here" as apposed to, "head SW for a bit, then Switch to SE past the outcropping." And I appear to not be alone in this confusion. I miss being able to steal from the merchants though. Edit: looking at your screenshot, if you moved the sign more to the west, and changed it to say "S then E", it might help...
ha ha Yes one town in Ultima II has a perfectly-placed "McDonalls" where the drive thru was just next to the town border. You could steal food like crazy and then slip out of town just as the guards approached!
You pretty much had to steal food in U2, at least in the beginning. I swear I died from starvation more often than anything else in that game!
Maybe I'm just stupid 'cause I just don't get this. I can find the town, but people keep talking about hanging around and killing stuff, but how do you do that without a weapon? No way to kill stuff, no money to buy food, I'm clueless as to how to proceed - what am I missing?!
You need to go talk to the king, he will give you a crappy sword. The king is in the town next to where you start. After you talk to the king then you can begin your journey to Yorke.
So simplistic yet so addictive! Hope the devs are working on more " works of art " like this. I feel like I should be paying more for having this much enjoyment. Does anyone know if the devs have a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for future projects?
Veggie Heaven on "the drag" in Austin, TX (where developer is from) is a magical place; nice reference.
I'm been playing it for while and so far I'm impressed! It brings back 30 years to my Ultima II days (has it really been that long). I'm impressed you learned assembly code to create new maps. Even more amazing since it was pre-internet so the information wasn't readily available. I have a couple questions: 1) I remember the color scheme being darker in Ultima. I think it was a black background with colored lines on top of it. I'm curious why you choose a different style? 2) The enemies can attack diagonal yet I can't. Is it suppose to be that way?
Hey klink, 1) The color scheme is not exact, nor are the sprites. I started off with something closer, but I didn't want it to be a *complete* rip off! In fact I was feeling bad about making something so derivative, so early on I ditched the black backgrounds and added more colors. I also changed the sprites to be 11x11 instead of 16x16. 2) Yes -- the diagonally-attacking enemies are something that I did copy from Ultima.
I think there may be a glitch, unless there's a reason why last night I had over 2000 food when I stopped playing, and when I started the game back up just now I have 90. It happened once before yesterday, but I only had a bit over 1000, and thought I just lost track of how low it had gotten while exploring. Last night, one of the last things I did was stock back up.
