Thanks for the reply. The beauty about this type of game is finding quick solutions to hard problems. I believe this enhances the experience and empowers the user. This feed back loop creates the illusion that you are right around the corner to something greater yet frustratingly far from the end goal. I bet my son $50 bucks that he could not do what I have done in 10 hours. We will see. He is now 4 hours strong in one sitting.....
Alright, hopelessly confused on the dungeon names. I found and finished Spoiler Antipathy , as well as Spoiler Odium and Execration . What was the bug again? Is Animosity=Antipathy? or does Abhorrance=Antipathy? Im lvl33 and still wandering around looking for the Spoiler 4th dungeon ingot .
One more thing, I promise. I will be done posting for awhile on suggestions. Simple music for each area(traveller, town, castles, dungeon, special areas, etc) is vastly more important then any suggestion yet offered so far.
Dunsany now I am confused too! Earlier you said that you couldn't Spoiler get under the bridge to get to Antipathy/Animosity. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Spoiler Abhorrence the one in the middle of the lake? So you are missing one. I don't have the map in front of me, but Spoiler there's one up north of Castle Pynchon surrounded by hills, there's one in the corner of the desert sort of southwest of the castle, there's one in the lake, and one pretty far south of Crosby on the southern continent. . Which one are you missing?
Hello! I've been really enjoying Lowlander, but I've run into a problem and registered on these forums in the hopes that someone can help. I was stuck in the same place as several others here- getting the ingots. I have two, and for the life of me could not find two more dungeons that I can actually get to without being able to cross mountains. So I started exploring places I had already been, and making a map so I could keep track of which dungeons I had completed and which I perhaps had not yet gotten into. (I'll repeat the request I saw others make earlier in this thread to make monsters on the map be a different color than signs/cities/dungeons- it would make my screenshot-derived map a lot easier to maintain. ) In my drive to figure out what the heck I was missing, I went back through the Dismal Dungeon despite already having the Spoiler dragon armor . Then I went to Theeves' Den, and now I appear to have put the game into an unwinnable state. I think I recall that on a previous visit, when I left the Den it told me I used a shortcut or something and put me back outside the outer entrance to Dismal Dungeon? In any case, now nothing of the sort occurs, so I am in a tiny pass in the mountains and can enter Theeves' Den, where there does not appear to be anything for me to do, and I can enter the Dismal Dungeon, but am locked in the room with the staircase and cannot get out. The "teleport to the surface" spell puts me outside the entrance near the Den, alas. After about 10 hours of play, my adventuring career appears to have come to ignoble end. Since I'm here, I'd like to also ask about Spoiler the Oracle. One of her tidbits is something like "in the land of woe there is a secret door, look behind the waterfall." (Or something like that- I don't have it written down here and as noted above don't have a save to double check it.) Does this lead to anything? I have bumped into every wall anywhere near any water in the Dungeon of Woe, and found nothing. OTOH, maybe one of the many towers I can't get into yet is also Woe... In any case, 10 hours of play should suggest that I was really enjoying Lowlander and will probably start again soon. I've played Ultima II many, many times, so I understand the desire to mimic the source material.
Goldenflame, I'm sorry but think you have found some bugs. Looks like today is fix Lowlander bugs day! First of all, that oracle saying is a red herring. That waterfall thing never came to be and I forgot the Oracle mentions it. [EDIT] omg I just realized that whole Oracle dialog is from a very early stage in the game and I forgot all about it -- nothing she says is in the game at all! I am changing her prophecies so that you get something for your money. Second -- since you got into Dismal, Spoiler you have the boots, right? That is all you need to get into all four dungeons. Maybe you just haven't found them all? See my reply to dunsany on this page, just before this. About Theeves -- Spoiler when you first exit Theeves, it is supposed to open up a passage through the mountains so that you do not have to fight your way back out through Dismal. It appears there is a bug that prevents this passage from appearing if you load the game from far away. However, if you quit the game outside Theeves -- force terminate the app or Quit to Main Menu from the Options -- and reload, the passage should appear. Let me know if that doesn't work -- I've fixed this for the next version. Also I did not see the other requests to change the enemy color on the minimap, but I think that is a good idea -- I have changed them to red for the next update.
Spoiler there's one up north of Castle Pynchon surrounded by hills = Excecration there's one in the corner of the desert sort of southwest of the castle = Antipathy there's one in the lake, and one pretty far south of Crosby on the southern continent = Odium I got confused as to which name was mixed up - Abhorrence/Antipathy/Animosity. Yes, I think Spoiler Abhorrence the one in the middle of the lake? So now back to my original question - How do I Spoiler get into the middle of the lake?
Oh man, I'm sorry. When you asked before, I saw that undeadcow had answered -- but I didn't read his spoiler! He gave you the answer for Antipathy/Animosity, not Abhorrence! lol the confusion OK for anyone having trouble with that dungeon Abhorrence, here is the answer : Spoiler "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a reference to the Hemingway novel, about a guy who has to blow up a bridge. You have to take the ship and blow up a bridge along one of the rivers leading to the lake. There's one along the west coast where you can see the bridge from the water. Or you can go in from down by the southeast city of Crosby, where there is a double bridge. I guess I overestimated people's destructive tendencies, I thought they would not hesitate to try blowing up bridges with that ship cannon.
@Gord I will try to get some music in there -- it was my intention originally but I never managed it. I also am pleading with the makers of GameMaker to make it possible to play your own music while keeping the game's sound effects. It's a simple thing in iOS but they do not provide for it yet. I remember when Ultima III came with 'Mockingboard' support -- a special audio card for the Apple II -- I would go over to my friend's house to hear the special music they made for it!
I'm glad to know this, I spent a lot of time searching for that secret passage! Yeah, I tend to feel like Gossip should be hit or miss as to whether it applies but in keeping with Ultima (III in particular) Oracles should be useful, if perhaps very obtuse. I do. The assumption that somehow I had missed two dungeons was why I had started mapping things thoroughly and got myself stuck in Theeves'. Your suggestion worked, though- I reloaded the game from just outside Theeves' and the passage was there. ONWARD! (As a PS, I would never have thought to cannon a bridge either. Unless there happened to be a monster on it. Muahahaha!)
Good I am glad you are going again. I am adding a couple of little things to Pynchon's dialog. If you have all the ingots except Abhorrence, he's going to throw you a hint about the bridges. Also I think I'm going to have him mention his daughter if it seems you can't find the boots.
Finished it. Killed Minax...err... Amazawhatishername. Good game, definitely shows a true labor of love!
Congratulations! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate you and others helping me to root out the bugs.
Great game! I'm really enjoying it. I seem to be stuck on dungeon Odium. I've been through it several times but can't find the key. Any advice?
Thanks! As if Odium weren't nasty enough, it has a trick too. I can tell you exactly if you like, but here is a hint: Spoiler Play close attention to your minimap as you walk through the dungeon.
I'm really glad that minimap thing was deliberate and not a bug you were going to fix. Just finished the game. I'll confess that after Spoiler getting the sword with the ingots I went straight to Azaman's tower, headed in, and fought her, and of course lost because she was invulnerable. Then I facepalmed and went Spoiler "right. Bob. That guy who makes fun of you if you think you're ready." So now I've actually finished it. About 11 1/2 hours of play. Thanks!
Thanks, could you give another hint though? Maybe I'm blind but I didn't see anything on the mini map.
