Well actually I've gotten stuck now :\ Playing the same enemy for an hour and I'm at the beginning of the game. I'm looking at their move list and it makes no sense to me how they can keep dropping so many rare high casting monsters so fast. It's the Wild Elf. Monsters keep constantly poisoning mine, monsters that get stronger as I hit them, has a bunch of cards that heal, monsters that heal over and over because he uses aeons on them. Their monsters are generally way stronger and rarer than the majority of my deck so I'm actually no match for them. And I can't get better because losing over and over just makes my record look horrible, takes all my money, and gives me absolutely nothing in return. So I'm not sure what happens in this game if you get stuck. This is normal mode btw. I can't really get my deck better because I don't have the money or cards to make better things. It seems like this is a way to end the game by running out of everything and not having any way to progress.
You should use your Aeon cards to add energy to your aeon field until you think you have enough of a maximum in that color. Depending on your deck that might be six or so. Since the aeon field refreshes to its maximum each turn, you don't usually need more than that. Hearthstone's energy pool grows automatically each turn (i.e., you get 1 on turn one, 2 on turn two, etc.) so they don't have the concept of adding mana (or aeons in this case) using cards. The key thing to note is the Aeon cards you play increase your maximum in that color for that turn and all future turns. Therefore, when building your deck make sure you have a high enough percentage (i.e., 30-35%) of Aeon cards in your deck or you may get draws where you can't cast creatures & spells quickly enough. My advice is to sell cards you aren't playing with when you are ready to buy something using that gold, or need gold to level up your abilities. Sell stuff earlier than that and you can lose that gold in duels. The forge is good for acquiring rarer cards that you haven't been able to find elsewhere, but you will mostly buy cards in card shops in towns and dungeons.
Since you are still sorting out how to play the game, I recommend you start a game on EASY difficulty, which makes the enemies slightly easier and the gold losses less. You can always return to this game later after you feel you have the hang of things. Also, I've been told black and blue are somewhat easier to start with, although I've played through with all four colors many times. As for Wild Elf being tough - he has only two rare cards in his deck, but he does have some beefy creatures like most green decks. You'll notice him playing a Moss Emerald most turns to gain 1 green Aeon to his aeon field (which increases his ability to cast those creatures and spells).
Hot tip. If you are about to lose, force close the app. It starts the duel from start again when you reload. That is, if you want to just beat that one duel only. You can wait it out that way u til you get a good starter hand and the AI gets screwed a bit. Well that was a working trick last time I played. Haven't played for a while so don't know if it's changed. Frankly I don't think it should change, even though as you get better it's not required at all.
@Talbs - that trick still works - I'd have to save the duel state to disk continuously to be able to reload it, and I have no plans of doing that.
Can't believe this amazing game is now a whooping dollar and people are still asking for promo codes. Come on people
Had to jump on a dollar... that's a no-brainer. I'm surprised people are asking for codes at this price. -_- Here's hoping you can get iCloud support in. I can't wait to jump into this!
This game looks really interesting. I'm glad the developers chose portrait. Beautiful artwork as well. Are the dungeons randomized or always the same?
The dungeons are always the same, but I think randomized dungeons are currently being worked on. And the rewards from the dungeons as well as the cards from the shops are randomized. I 100% recommend this game at full price. It's really a steal for a dollar. No iap, no ads, just a great single-player ccg.
After having played and won a 5 matches streak on The fantastic Mabinogi Duel tonight... I'm here to try another CCG.
The enemies are always the same in different games, same decks, but the cards are always shuffled. So you can face the same enemy and have bad luck with your cards or you can faceroll him with him having bad cards. I finished this game 4 times with all 4 colours and I can tell you: it is absolutely worth it. Especially for this price, you won't get a better CCG without any IAP or ads. And the Dev (Lord Foul) is active here too and listens to your input. Endgame (after finishing the campaign) is being worked on.
I gave this a go and so far have been slaughtered by a rat now twice in a row. I only have the beginning set of cards (green) and have balanced stats. I killed the initial troll mage on my second round by pure luck (the first time I drew hardly any aeons) and got him the second time, ending the game at 1 to -1. And I'm playing on a normal. Is this game tuned right for players who start playing this game right now at the beginning?
Saw the front page article that mentioned the sale on this. Is this pretty easy to learn? Don't get too into complex CCGs.
I generally recommend playing on easy to start with, as the enemies are a little weaker and you lose less gold. I've also been told green starter deck is a little weaker compared to others (that will be getting some slight tweaks in the next update).
There is definitely a learning curve. The game has a lot of similarities to games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone to name a few, as far as needing to read through each card and understand what they do. You also have to manage your deck and make sure you have the right amount of resource cards (called Aeons in Lost Portal) so that you can cast creatures/spells. There is a manual that explains all of the rules, but there is no walk-through that holds your hand through a duel at this point.
