Mark my words Str8ts 6x6 is almost without peer on the app store. It is a brand new puzzle game that actually lives up to its claim of being a real competitor to Sudoku. There are hundreds of no-brainer puzzle games on the app store that task the player with lining up and crushing sparkly gems ad nauseam, finding a hidden red fireplug in a Greek coliseum, or testing the limits of randomness and the human brain's capacity to interpret that as entertainment. I know this because, I admit it, I own many of them. Don’t get me wrong, they do serve their purpose, but they quickly and quietly live out their soulless and limited life spans on page ten of my iPhone, never to see the light of day again. Str8ts is different. It has occupied prime real estate on page one of my iPhone since I discovered its brilliance. It’s been there ever since and it may never leave. It’s that good. Str8ts is a puzzle game that will stand the test of time, not only on the iPhone platform, but also in the ever-expanding world of puzzle gaming, as a whole. Acclaimed puzzle designer Andrew Stuart is the mastermind behind this product and has created a new form of puzzle that is infinitely re-playable, beautifully scalable, and is solved using pure logic; no random chance or guessing games here. The player must simply create a “Str8t” of numbers, just like a straight in poker, in each of the rows and columns on the board. The ingenious trick here, though, is the inclusion of hidden information…wait..wait…let’s not reveal all here, because part of the fun of this game is discovering its intricacies. What I will say though, is that any true puzzle gamer that likes testing their brain will be overjoyed with this game. Mark my words, people will still be playing and loving Str8ts ten years from now. At the beginning of this review, I mentioned that it is “almost” without peer in the app store. That is because Syndicated Puzzles have been kind enough to release a companion app to Str8ts 6x6, which shares the same innovative game play and fine pedigree, but on an epic scale. When you have finished every one of the over 800 puzzles included in Str8ts 6x6, or even prior to that if you dare, it may be time for you to graduate to its “Big Brother”, simply called Str8ts that plays out on a gloriously, mind-twisting 9x9 grid. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
iTunes Review My review of Str8ts 6x6... If you are a fan of Sudoku, I can almost guarantee you will like Str8ts. It's very similar but with enough variance to feel like a whole new experience. Numbers cannot be repeated in columns or rows (just like Sudoku), however, the additional requirement is that all connected numbers need to make a sequence. This small change along with the unfillable black squares transform this into a whole new challenge. I love it. Application-wise, the game does not dissapoint, the interface is clean and very usable, it has multiple-level undos, a "check" button to validate if your puzzle is correct up to any point (very helpful especially early on while learning the ropes), and the ability to input "possible" numbers into the box prior to making your final choice. There's 4 levels of difficulty and 800 puzzles which should keep you busy for hours. I also agree with many of the reviewers who are saying this is not a "lite" version of the full version of Str8ts, it's really just a smaller board which results in a quicker game which is appreciated because there are times when you just don't have time to complete a full blown Str8ts or Sudoku game. This is a great hidden treasure on the iTunes store that needs to have more visibility, highly recommended for puzzle fans.
I'd post a 6x6 review but I don't have it! Didn't see the point when I've got the real version. I think I reviewed it and Domino Dice, I'll check if they're not there I'll write some! (Now that I've figured out DD I can write a better review... )
We are brewing a nice surprise for any one who liked Str8ts. We are creating a competitive version with a total new game where players are trying to use the least amount of moves and solve the puzzle in the fastest time!
