Xbox and playstation controllers should both work. Those two are your best bets for controller supported games.

I played it with a Nimbus+ a long time ago and that worked too.

Not all apps have the official stamped controller ”seal” on the app store page. You kinda have to dig around on the internet and forums to reliable check if a game supports external controllers.

Just purchase 8Bitdo Lite 2 (relatively cheap and compact) and try to play LM. Runs smoothly.
Some info:
Remap joystick in Ipad/ios for 8bitdo Lite 2:

Go to Setting > General > Game Controller(This would appear if you already connect the controller) > Add profile > Select which button > Done

This is the title I am playing a fair bit at the moment, enjoying it so far. I have only played using a controller, it runs really well!
