Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition is now out. If you're a fan of Sierra style adventure games (especially since this is one) you'll want to check it out. Day 1 is free, and the rest of the days can be bought in three chunks via IAP. I'm not very far into the game yet, but it seems to play pretty nicely on my dilapidated iPad 2.
Big fan of this game, I haven't tried the iOS version yet. How is the IAP priced? Is there a discount for buying all the chapters at the same time? I don't have access to my device right now.
According to iTunes, Days 2-3 bundle is $2.99, and Days 4-6 bundle is $3.99. Since iTunes just lists the "top" in-app purchases it doesn't show the final 7-10 bundle, but I'd gather it's as much as, or if pattern prevails $1 more than, the 4-6 bundle. So all told you'd be spending $11 to $12 for it. I'm not sure if there's a bundle price for the whole set, and I'm running a Testflight version that has all the goodies unlocked anyway, so I'm not sure I'd be to check the IAP regardless. It's a better deal than the PC version, and I believe it's the exact same game.
We seem to be in the same boat. I had this crazy idea I would have it reviewed by release but I'm only on Day 2. :/ Underestimated its length.
I just made it to day 2 last night. I never thought I'd say this about a game, but it's almost TOO in-depth. And you can't just not look at things, because you never know what's going to give you an extra point! It's interesting, but I'm hoping it gets to be more puzzle and less examine based soon. Sadly, I don't think that's going to be the case. The other thing that annoyed me was that the very first real puzzle you had to solve (in the park, though I won't say what for the sake of spoilers) was not at all obvious to me (not what your goal was, but the way to achieve that goal), and then when I figured it out it was very difficult for me to execute. Not sure if it was my lowly iPad 2 giving me grief, but it was frustrating. Still, I'm going to stick it through for a while yet to see where it's headed. I figure it deserves that much given how much accolades this game has received in the past.
I had the same exact experience. I used the hints to figure out what I had to do there, then it took me a bunch of tries to finally get it done. It was frustrating -- maybe the game is too old school for me? I agree, there's so much to inspect. That's a great thing, but at the same time, it makes me feel like it's gonna take me at least a month to get through the game if I don't keep using hints. I like the humor and the story and setting are interesting, but it's just such a time-consuming game. I guess you get your money's worth.
Glad to know I'm not the only one on most of my points. The sad thing about the puzzle is that I grew up on these games (though I have to admit I never actually played this particular one). I don't remember very many of them being this insanely difficult right off the bat. Or maybe I've just gotten spoiled by most modern games I do recall one of the King's Quest games - I think it was part II - where I had trouble getting started. Of course once I figured out the initial "trick" to moving through the game I think I beat the thing in half an hour! I do concur, though, that if the pace stays the same as it was in day 1 there's no question you'll get your money's worth. I guess it just depends on if you're more of a "I like a bit of story with my game" or a "I like a little bit of game with my story" kind of player.
I like stories with my games. I think I just have too many games I'm supposed to be playing/writing about, so it's hard to invest so much time into just one.
Once again I feel your pain I especially have that problem with games I've already reviewed but didn't finish. I've invested so much time in Secret Files Tunguska and really want to know how it ends. Unfortunately the game is like 2.5 GB! Granted it has an iCloud save option, but I know how that will work. I'll save to the cloud, delete the game, and probably never get back to it. Apple just needs to invent a cheap, 1 TB iPad
I'm playing now and it has LOTS of potential. It's built on that 3D hold and move and look around game engine ( Unity?), which I must admit - I do find tricky to control. I've spent a good extra 30 seconds going through a doorway due to me not being lined up with it perfectly. Having mentioned the game engine it's using, I have gotten stuck. As in stuck in the movement part, not in the what to do next, thus my lament over the movement and mechanism. Anyway, I'm letting it sleep for a few hours and hopefully I can resume where I left off. It's not our Glitch or FMG style, but it is interesting. I think the dev would be better off just making it a tap screen by screen rather than the existing game engine mechanism, as it seems a bit hit and miss. But, I see the game direction. And it's quite peaceful with its music and sfx, so I'm willing to push on. I'd be interested to know what others think. I'm also playing Tunguska, which seems to go on and on and on...
It's probably not unity unless you remember actually seeing the Unity logo displayed when the game starts up. What device are you playing this on? I have an iPad 2, and I'm working on a game right now that's written in Unity 5 that barely runs on my device. I might have to pass on this one until I get a newer iPad. It does. Every time I think I'm close to the end they throw a new wrinkle in and add more game play. I think I'm finally close to the end, though. I've gotten to the point where I don't wait too long when I'm stuck before I look up a hint. I've really enjoyed the game, but I need my 2.5 GB back
If you're an Agatha Christie fan, here are a couple of 99 cents sales: Agatha Christie: Dead Man's Folly (Full) Agatha Christie: 4:50 from Paddington (Full)
Why is that Salem game iPhone-only if they didn't optimize it for the wide screen? That has to be one of the strangest decisions I've seen.
Is that the old Salem game? Salem witch trials? That actually was a great game. Not sure what this is but if it's not optimized for iPad I'm not even bothering. Thanks for the heads up
Well, it's only on iPhone it seems. That's the odd part. It looks like it was designed for an iPhone 4/iPad resolution. Not buying it either, as I play most games on my iPad these days, while waiting to upgrade my iPhone.
Hey, I didn't say they were good games. I was just trying to keep this forum moving a bit I'm actually surprised that anyone would release a hidden object or adventure game these days that either wasn't optimized for or didn't have an actual iPad version. I realize if you're stuck with a small screen then you have to deal with it, but these days those of us with bigger screens shouldn't have to put up with butchered iPhone resolutions any more.
