    State of Confusion!!
I agree that the discussions here have been helpful and given me quite a perspective on what people enjoy. I happen to enjoy hidden object games as well as most other types of adventures and would appreciate the conversation about HOGs being kept in the larger thread. That way I can see other types of games that I may have missed. Overall though, I think the community aspect is the most important thing about the thread. People come and go as they choose, but are always welcome, IMO. Just my two cents.

I actually find this comment quite interesting, because I think it's completely the opposite. I've been playing adventure games since I owned my first computer, and I never even heard of a HoG until I got involved with Big Fish Games. Adventure games have existed since before computers could render graphics, and quite obviously HoGs would be meaningless without visuals. Please don't get me wrong when I say this, because I like HoGs, but I think they are actually a de-evolution of the genre, rather than "true" adventure games evolving from them. I believe that HoGs came about because they are much easier to produce than a full fledged adventure game since many of them don't feature puzzles or storyline. Interestingly enough, the sub-genre is actually starting to catch back up to it's lineage thanks to games like the Treasure Seekers series that actually do have plots and puzzles.

Either way, I do think it's a good idea to discuss them here, because to some it is their only exposure to the adventure game genre. I would be quite surprised to see anyone bottle their opinions about anything, though, because that's not the nature of this group :)

  3. Btw, I'd beware of Nightmare -escape-. I checked it out in the app store bc it looks like Limbo (which I heard such great things about). But based on reviews, it sounds like they put together a crappy game and were banking on people buying it bc it looks like Limbo (guess it works until the first few people start to write reviews).

    Wits End
I'm glad that this thread offers a wide range of games. That means there is always something to download. And I trust the reviews on here much better than on the App Store. Besides where would I go when I want to chat about such games. Other half seems to fade out and get that blank look when I discussing the latest game

That actually wouldn't be such a terrible idea;) I've never been a HOG fan but learned to tolerate BFG that were mostly adventure w a tad of HOG lol Zork is what originally turned me on to the adventure genre (way back in the day)along with Myst and some others. I think the people on here all feel differently about various games which makes for interesting convo. I certainly don't get offended if others don't like something I do....Chateau is still my fav game and I'm sure most would disagree. Ha

I always find the nature of the conversations here decent and fun. I'd be surprised if anyone came here to discuss a HOG/game and felt compelled to run in fear from our words like other forums. If anything it would serve as a great recommendation of what to - and what not to try at gaming a'la adventure.

And...without a doubt HOG lovers would be thoroughly impressed with the positive recommendations we've all pretty much given for the Treasure Seekers series.

I first played TS based on recommendations from this thread.

It's an invaluable thread for adventure gamers like us.

I confess I am a BFG fan though I much prefer the games which have more adventure/puzzles than HOG, eg Drawn, Awakening, Empress of the Deep. I hope they release more of those types of games.

Just wanted to pop in real quick and comment that I do agree this is very good thread w/ valuable info and everyone that posts seem to be a great bunch. I haven't delved into the adventure side of the iOS gaming in long while mainly because I've had so many hogs to finish up first.
(uh, did I just say a naughty word?.....kidding;))

But I would like to try something that isn't too complicated. I'd tried a couple awhile back and was turned off, of course one was a chapter II version

So any recommends on an true (recent?) adventure game that is not too over my head to start with? I've not an iPad but a Touch device btw.
    Appreciated!

  9. I've heard such good things about Drawn, but alas it's not available on iPhone :(. Actually, most of the highly-recommended BFG games are iPad-only. Makes me sad :(

  10. Did you try Yesterday? Most of us "regulars" have played it and I think we all agreed it was an excellent game.

You just need to get an iPad :) I know, that's not a very nice thing to say. It is too bad the Drawn series isn't available for the smaller screen, because that's still one of my favorite BFG series.

I definitely think this is a great game, but I'm not sure it's a good "beginner's" game for someone looking for a less challenging adventure game. Unfortunately, my experience is that the easier adventure games also tend to be more kid oriented. Not saying that's a bad thing necessarily, but it might not appeal to adult gamers so much. For the person that was asking, Royal Trouble might be a good choice. It kind of has a HoG like interface, though if I'm not mistaken there wasn't much HoG gameplay in it. Plus, it was a really fun game.

For something not too complicated at all and fairly introductory - as in the bare bones of an adventure quest - I'd recommend Dream Chronicles.

I'm trying to remember all the games I've played now:confused:

    See what the others recommend...

  14. Oh, did you play The Lost City? That's a nice one to wet your feet on.

Thanks everyone. I'm checking those recommended when I get home from work. Maybe I can ease into it instead of grabbing an unknown game like I did earlier. :)

The earlier suggestions should keep you busy, but here are a couple more:

    Mystery Lighthouse
The Secret Of Grisly Manor (developer of The Lost City)

I loved Mystery of the Crystal Portal. I think he/she should start with a BFG bc it may not seem as foreign. For example:
    Awakening : Moonfell Wood
    Nightmare Adventures:The Witches Prison
    OR

Midnight Mysteries:Salem Witch Trials (not BFG)

All of the above are amazing. I wasn't a huge fan of Mystery Lighthouse. However I LOVED Grisley Manor:)

I was under the impression that there was a desire to steer clear of HoGs, though I guess these games all do a pretty good job of making the HoG screens secondary to everything else from what I understand. I'm not sure that I've played any of these (except maybe Moonfell Wood briefly), but I've played Awakening: The Dreamless Castle and two of the other Midnight Mysteries games, and I really liked all of them. Haunted Houdini was especially awesome.
