Add me to the chorus of folks questioning the TA preview. I played through about 60% of this on my 360 before some of the major fall releases took away my time. I always regretted not playing all the way through and had vowed that I would go back to it. I picked up this for My Touch 4g yesterday and am having none of the issues the TA preview talked about. Frame rate is fine, the controls are faithfully reproduced for the touch screen. If you've played any twin stick shooter on the IOS platform, you'll have no issues with aiming and strafing. The remainder of the buttons seem well placed to me as well. Graphics look good too. Overall I think this is a great port and I'm excited to actually be able to beat this game now.
I played a bit more, got interrupted by a phone call and it took me right back to where i was. Multitasking FTW Still loving on it
Ditto here as well. Don't understand all the complaints in the TA review AT ALL. I'm enjoying the game so far and find the graphics fairly good for the port. Controls are working great as well. In the end, you can't always trust one review - nothing against TA as I do often agree with their reviews. But it's just one person's opinion.
Tried again this morning and it worked! i have to say from what i've played it's one of the best app store games i've seen, controls are great, graphics are great, gameplay is great. I've seen no frame rate drops and i hope the crashing was just a brief mishap...
Glad to hear that the front page impressions were off. Does anyone know if it is possible to play co-op between the iPhone and iPad? That's really the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger right now.
I would also like to add my voice by confirming that the front page impressions are way off imho. I played the game on PC and I actually prefer this version. It's like this game was made for a handheld. Also about the graphics, yes it looks a little giggly at times, but it's still a good looking game. I think games like Infinity Blade has the reviewer a little spoiled lol It's a shame that most people "here" are going to pass over this because one person's opinion. It's far from perfect, but I say wait for a few other reviews from other websites like Joystiq or IGN...
I'm only 20 mins in, but put me in the "what the heck was that?" camp on the TA review. No framerate drops so far on iPhone 4, decent (but somewhat small) controls. The graphics are not retina but still very impressive -- love those huge depth of field views. It's possible that it all goes to hell later on, but I trust that Ideaworks will stand behind their game. So far I'm enjoying way more than Shadow Guardian (talk about spotty controls).
For what it's worth, I confirmed everything in Brad's impression post before it went live. The game didn't run very well on either my iPhone 4 or iPad, and it seemed very apparent to me that the game was still balanced for a physical controller instead of being more forgiving with the loose feeling virtual controls. My biggest disappointment was just how poorly the online coop mode works, which literally (in our testing) amounted to the game just crashing over and over for both of us until we were lucky enough to connect to each other... At which point we played through the first area and it crashed again. I'm glad you guys are liking it, and aren't having issues with it. We don't take posting anything lightly, and our concerns were thoroughly double checked. If the game gets an update, we'll totally take a look at it again, because despite all the problems there is a fun game hiding in there somewhere that's just a few bug fixes from getting out.
I think we have consensus! both squarezero and vovin on board. I have a theory tht mabe the issues were caused by game centre sportiness in co op? All of the positive impressions seem to be based on singleplayer experiences whereas the review was Eli and Brad playing together I think? Edit: didn't realise Eli already responded.
Hey guys, First of all, I do not recommend the game in its current version. Even though the combat and graphs are very good on the iPad, the puzzle part of the game is almost impossible to play due to the control system. In comparison, the 360 version of the game has excellent controls because you can easily slide your fingers through the Xbox controller while on the iPad is impossible and weird because the puzzles demands you to touch in the middle of the screen and then press another button. Awful. Seriously. I hope that future updates would improve the puzzle part of the game. Stay away for now.
Sure I'm missing something stupid, but I'm already stuck. The very first lever you pull to open a door. I go through the door and there's two dart traps shooting and a stairway going down. After I go down a few monsters attack and I kill them. But the hallway at the end of the stairs doesn't seem to go anywhere. And even back upstairs there doesn't seem to be anywhere to go or jump to. Any suggestions?
I'm not questioning TA's review standards, and, as I mentioned, with 20 minutes of gameplay I'm not in a position to really question Brad's experience. But I expected to be disappointed from the get-go, and I sure wasn't. Interestingly, I actually declined the GameCenter link when it popped on my screen (I was in a room with spotty reception). I have heard from other devs that live updating of GameCenter achievement can wreck havok with framerates. Perhaps that's part of the issue. The whole bit about the controls being balanced for consoles doesn't mean much to me -- they're complex, but so far seem to work on a touchscreen. I'll put in some more time with the game and update my impressions.
Co-op checked... and it works fine for me! Hodapp, I'd never question the quality of your reviews, so I can just guess that you maybe got an older review version of that game? The overall quality is... well, it is from Square/Enix. @ Quisch: yeah, I'm running it on a 3GS... Smoother than butter, I can tell. And you can now press the buy-button without any fear and enjoy an unique blend of absolutely cool game mechanics: a jump'n'run based dual-stick platformer with small RPG-like character development features (through artifacts)... I can't believe how well these features work together.
