Honestly this is a great game. It is challenging and fun. I've spent an hour and a half on the first two missions. Some replayability too.
I had the Gameboy version of tombraider/Lara Croft. And that was a 2D Platformer. So this is nothing like the gameboy version StarCat. The game is 100x better. Im enjoying it so far.
I had the other GBA Tomb Raider game as well, which was had like a fake 3D view point to it. The iOS Lara Croft indeed, as triggywiggy has also stated, looks far better than anything possible on even the gba. Pics below. As I'm sure you can tell, there's really no comparison with the below:
I try not to ever come across as an ignorant fool. That being said, I think Infinity Blade looks better, as does Lego Harry Potter. They offer different styles, graphically, but in my opinion those games offer better visuals that were tailor-made for the device. Unlike Lara Croft, which has at times an awful camera that goes out of its way to lose Lara. Also, as aforementioned, in comparison to its console big sister, the game feels rushed and sloppy. There's a section early on where, if you want, you are tasked with jumping over the revolving bars 12 times consecutively. On a console this is easily doable with a proper control pad in hand. On the iDevice it's a chore. Now I'm not always an ignorant fool and I know the iDevice has control limitations, but had a little extra time been taken to properly optimize the controls then... Anyway, I hope in the future I can be less of an ignorant fool and more of a person with an opinion that may differ from others.
Quite simply, you know nothing about the process of developing this game. In fact, I would venture to say that you know nothing about the process of developing any game. You have no idea if "a little extra time" would have made that one particular achievement (not required to complete the game, natch) more easily achievable on a portable platform. To call this particular game a rushed, sloppy port is simply ignorant. To make my point a bit sharper, Ideaworks has taken 80% of a recently released current-gen console game and delivered successfully on a portable platform. And they're selling it for $6.99. Graphically, it does things that no other iOS title has done before. I have no idea what it took to make that happen. Neither do you. As to Infinity Blade and Lego Harry Potter, please. Infinity Blade is a tiny game compared to Lara Croft (a very well executed tiny game, but tiny nonetheless). And Lego Harry Potter is a port of PSP game, a platform that is less powerful than a most iOS devices. (Same goes for GTA:CW). As I said, you're welcome to think the game is meh. Everyone has a right to their opinion. But when you make a baseless accusation (and that's what saying that the game is sloppy and rushed really is) you shouldn't be surprised if someone calls you on it.
I have no qualms with you calling me out if you believe my opinion to have no basis in fact. That is your right. I do, however, think you could've used more tact in calling me out. All I ask for is respect on these forums... nothing more, nothing less. I see you on these boards often and I have respect for you as a poster and have never insulted you... Hell, I haven't insulted anyone on these boards, because these forums are about games, not making fellow posters feel like idiots for having an opinion, because opinions are not based on fact. Unless they are fact-based opinions, but that's a whole other can of worms. Anyway, have a blessed day all you Lara Croft fans... Oh, I think the game is decent. I tend to agree, at the end of the day, with the PocketGamer review. Ciao!
For what it's worth, the phrase I used was "coming across like an ignorant fool," and I was referring to delivering an uninformed opinion as it were a fact. It was not intended as personal insult, but as an impression of how a particular stand reads. It's one thing to say that a game feels rushed or sloppy. It's another to state it as if you had direct knowledge of the development process. You say that you didn't insult me, and that's true. But claiming authoritatively that someone's work is sloppy and rushed is an insult to them. You will forgive me if, as someone who makes a living in a creative field, I bristle a bit.
+ 1 for Squarezero's post. I think some people feels like they can earn forum brownie point if they agree with TA's review but then again that is just my opinion.
