This is a great game, good graphics, gameplay and smooth framerate. Had fun playing co-op with someone else.
I did find some guides that showed me where the skull was that I was missing, but I still can't get the time challenge. It says I beat the level in 6:34, but it still won't give it to me. I did notice that on the xbox version, it only gives you 6:00 to finish, could it be possible that they simply changed the text for the challenge and forgot to change the code? Would I seriously have to beat the level in 6:00? If so, that doesn't seem possible.
This is the only game I *didn't* buy in that amazing deluge of new games on Wednesday night... because I read the damning TA review of it beforehand. Then I read the glowing recommendations in this thread and realised that the reviewer must have had a bad day. What a fantastic title this is. Absolutely SUPERB. Of all of the games I've bought in the last week, just Aralon and this are finding themselves constantly played on my iPhone. If, like me, that ridiculous review put you off, please just ignore it and give this game a go... it's brilliant. I really hope that TA re-review this game properly; it deserves so much better. Jamie.
Obviously that's the first place I looked - the brightness setting doesn't do justice. All it looks like with that setting is like a white rectangle was place over the screen with some opacity thrown in. It needs a contrast component to be worth anything. And what's the deal with comparing it to youtube videos? Seriously? Or maybe I've misunderstood and you think I was comparing it to any old youtube video. I was comparing ones of the game, and no, not on my iPod, but on my computer.
I held off on the iPad version, because of the review... Then against the TA review consensus, I splurged and purchased it. It has a superb, dark and brooding atmosphere. It plays very well. It's just a damn fine showpiece title. I'm glad I bought Lara Croft for iPad. Well worth the 9.99 (it wasn't even in my "upcoming games" budget, but I budged and don't regret it) Btw, TA is very indie friendly. Maybe why they weren't as nice to Lara Croft, or more critical? I've been waiting to see reviews for Shadow Guardian and Nova 2. I think Shadow Guardian is fantastic, my favorite purchase of the week.
Brightness does what it says -- it makes things brighter. Contrast would be a different slider, and even though it would be useful, the lack of it doesn't make brightness useless. As is, I find that ledges, items, enemies, etc are easy to spot on the screen. TV screens are brighter than portable screens -- they use way more power -- so direct comparisons with the console version seem pretty pointless. The question is whether you're getting enough contrast to play the game on an iPhone, and the answer is a big yes for me.
Was on the fence about this but since everyone is having a great time with it, I may as well take the plunge.
I have never played a Tomb Raider title before but this does look intriguing... How many hours of gameplay is there and can you access the achievements in-game without accessing Game Center for devices on OS 3.2 in the HD version?
Clearly the review is just straight WRONG if 99% of the people so far have the exact opposite opinions of the game. Reviews are supposed to help people judge if a game is worth buying, which this review here didn't.
I'm not sure about several of your questions, I'm not that far into the title. I'm on iOS 4.2. I don't understand why any iPad owner hasn't upgraded. The multitasking alone is a godsend. About Gamecenter, I'm sure it's not needed to play. I do t know how those achievements would work, without it. I can say: if you have a PS1 through XBox 360, there are Tomb Raider titles available. TR is one of those really good series, which has been underrated. It's not like Sonic, which has been broken and unplayable in recent years. Fall in love with Lara Croft. If anyone is curious about TR and has a 360: Download from XBox live the demo: Tomb Raider Underworld. A great game.
Just read pocketgamer's review. Not usually one to listen to anything they say, but, interestingly they give it a Bronze award 7 out of 10 (still low IMHO), with the MAJOR Caveat that the ipad version they played seemed to be particularly broken. "The real problem is in a poorly adapted iPad version that crashes frequently and possesses a cumbersome control scheme. Cut-scenes prove to be the issue here, with the game often dumping you to the home screen shortly after the start of one. Skipping helps, though not entirely. While the controls have been configured in much the same way as the iPhone and iPod touch version, the larger iPad screen and expanded layout make for awkward control. An option to customise the position of buttons and full alternate control schemes are needed. As a result of the problems I experienced with the iPad version, the final score applies only to the superior and recommended iPhone and iPod touch edition. It's with this version that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light can be enjoyed for its fun mix of twin-stick action and ancient temple trotting." Im surprised that there appears to be so much discrepancy in the versions - are most people here playing on iphone/ipod and not on ipad?
iPhone version. 0 crashes so far and the control scheme works fine for me. The game does have glitches -- one in particular made the end of a level inaccessible so I had to restart it (it worked fine the second time). But they're uncommon, and even with them the game is still on of the best i've played on the platform.
Same here. Must be the TA review was while using the iPad. I can't put this game down. For that person above with the time trial, I was able to complete the time trial for the first three levels on my first try (by first try, I mean after having one go around at the level to get all the other achievements) by rolling constantly.
I have to agree, this game along with Lego Harry Potter have really blown me away showing how versatile this little gem of a handheld console the iphone is.
Is game ok on the iPhone 4? I was put off by the lack of retina support and bad reviews, but now I'm reconsidering.
I'm playing it on the iphone 4 and it looks great! For those people who want to make the graphics on this game pop, I found the sweet spot, turn the in game brightness setting all the way down to 0 and your device brightness setting up. Apparently the developers put the brightness at 50% to probably offset playing on a small screen but it washed out lots of vibrant colors and shadows at the same time. Everything in game now is pure eye candy! I also changed the jump button to double tap on the right stick control and it's a lot easier to jump while running now.
its great on the iphone 4. @cilo Thanks for the tip! might wanna play with the ac plugged in tho cos i bet those settings run the battery down pretty quick!
