Lol it's like someone who explain you how difficult it is to walk, stunning you until you realize he tries walking with one leg. So apart if you have only one arm or only one hand I don't see what's impossible here, in fact it seems more the reverse, ie very easy control. Perhaps you handle the ipad to play but well then you should try put it on a surface slightly inclined, both hands free with 10 finders, and then you'll realize how kiddish is the control you quote and I doubt any console device could do better for such sort of control.
Is there a chance that the TA editors can try the game again on another iPhone or something to see if all the issues they saw still happen? Not a single person who has bought it in this thread seems to have any of the issues, plus other game news sites are linking to the Touch Arcade review saying the game is buggy and broken.
Are the achievements unlockable in-game without accessing Game Center for non Game Center enabled devices?
Agreed. I was pretty hesitiant after the front page impressions (as I normally agree with TA's reviews), but after Vovin and Squarezero (whose opinions I also trust) seemed to give it the nod, I figured I'd give it a chance. Very glad I did. I mean, I totally understand that opinions are opinions, but the front page impressions almost sound like they were for a different game than the one I'm playing. Like they decided to focus on a couple of needles of glitches in a huge haystack of awesome. I haven't had a single problem with the controls and honestly find them better than a fair amount of action games I've played on iOS. The screen's a little cramped, but everything is intuitive and pretty easy to get used to/deal with once you adapt to the positioning. I read some theories that maybe they were playing the game with Game Center on and it was causing the app to chug, but I've been playing it with Game Center on since the beginning, and haven't run across any problems. There may be a few little polish issues here and there (though personally I haven't run across any yet - just judging on what I've read in the thread), but honestly this is one of the best "big budget" titles I've ever played on the iPhone. Seriously nothing even close to irritating enough to hold on and wait for a patch (unless something goes horribly wrong later on in the game).
I've experienced brief crashes, only when starting the app. Nothing major. I just reload it and it works perfectly after. A very engrossing and atmospheric game. The visuals and sounds, music and what have you, all look and run wonderfully on iPad. I was on the fence too. However, I'm glad I went against the review and purchased the title. Well worth 9.99
I want to pull the trigger on this one but.... I have it on ps3 and have played through the first 2 1/2 levels, I would love to have it on iPhone as I would play it more. I just want to know how it compares to the psn version. Anyone who has played both able to help me out with a comparison???
I also didnt buy this game after I saw the review on the Front page, but after reading this thread I bought it and it is pretty awesome. Gonna get into it tonight when the kids go to bed! And btw controls so far are very very good. I read that was an issue but I don't know how much better they can get? Seems Perfect to me
This game has a few issues...the brightness is off, compared to the original, some things are pretty difficult so see. (I noticed this comparing video game shots on youtube) Another thing I noticed is that there's this weird fog in the north-east of the screen that is annoying.
Lay a bomb, run out of the perimeter, kaboom, lay another bomb, detinate it a fraction of a second after she stands back up. Rinse and repeat. Also if you do have this game for PSN or Xbox Live, and are into the whole console thing I would definitely get it there. The lighting and visuals are so crisp on the next gen consoles, it reminds me of Diablo 2 running at high res on a pc. This isn't to detract against this port, it's pretty damn nice looking for an iOS title. There's a lot of detail: different weapon sounds/firing rate/bullet fire fx, great ambient shadows/lighting, expansive floors, and bosses who explode similar to something seen in Diablo 2. Honestly this is Diablo 2 if it had a gunner class. Personally I'm not a console gamer anymore, iOS suits my life perfectly.
The physics are a bit worse - you can see it when jumping on the spears and rolling the stones. Other than that, in my opinion, exact same games. All the secrets and trophies are intact (through Game Center). And ad-hoc co-op is just as fun. Mind you, I haven't completed the PS3 version, but I did play the first couple of levels quite extensively.
Agreed! I took the plunge and Like many others here think the "review" was harsh. Graphics are great, not a huge downgrade from ps3. Like the poster above I mainly played the first three levels. Oh, and the controls seem spot on to me. Essentially this is a dual stick shooter with challenges and meta games in every level. The ta review almost made me not buy it but I am super glad I did. Now I can probably get around to finishing it! The review through me for a loop because ta fawns on many twin stick games and to me this is one of the best in the genre on the app store. This absolutely blows away lauded and praised games like minigore, alive 4 ever and the recent max adventure. Great game. Highly recommended. Buy it if you like dual stick games or tomb raider. Don't hesitate.
Funny that that review was probably one of the harshest I've seen on this site and yet it appears to be almost universally loved in this thread. The reviewers are entitled to their own opinion, but this is one case where I would hope that maybe they'd be nice enough to change the article to link to this thread so they can hear the very different opinions. Hope not too many people miss out after reading that review.
well, I decided to get this game and I couldn't be happier, but I am a bit puzzled. I have been trying to get all the achievements for the first level, the temple of light, but I can't seem to find all the red skulls. I believe I've searched all the areas, but I'm wondering if there is one that may be harder to find than the others. Also, I go back and it says my level time was 6:34, but I haven't gotten the achievement for beating it in under 7:00, has anyone else had this problem? Does anybody know where I could find a good guide or walkthrough for this game? I might need a few hints on how to get some of the achievements later on. All in all, I am more than happy with my purchase, I can only imagine how this might look and play on a 4th gen, and I will hopefully find that out soon
hmm totally didnt buy it because of the review but everyone seems to like it. I think I'll pick it up later on and find out for myself. Too many games right now
Since the game is a duplicate of 360 version then I reckon gamefaqs.com should be your first port of call
Can't see how as there is a brightness control in settings for the game? Options and settings are the first place I go before ever starting a game. Weird so many people don't do that. I'd also like to point out the fact that you were comparing them to youtube videos. I mean, seriously.
I actually looked at the IGN FAQs and they matched the iPhone version perfectly -- at least for the first three levels.
