    I'm ok with that.

Seriously though, if I could afford it, I would. I just don't fancy taking out a small loan to get a laptop.

Woah there cowboy, why don't you get down off your high horse for a second there. Me personally, I have used macs before, long enough to know that they're good computers, much better than Windows for certain people/tasks (if you do a lot of multimedia work they're gonna be better than a windows PC).

Let me just quote the OP for a sec here:

"I'm after an i7 with a resolution of 1920x1080 - is this even reasonable?
I want it to be a portable replacement for a desktop unit - I want to be able to run decent games on it... decently.
Is gaming on a laptop at 1920x1080 reasonable?
(Most importantly, I can't afford any more than $2K NZD - about 1600 USD under the current exchange rate)"

    "replace desktop... gaming"
Gaming on macs is getting there, slowly, but right now, and for the forseeable future, is vastly inferior to gaming on a PC. So if the OP wants to do any sort of moderate gaming, a PC is most likely going to be what he wants here.
Keeping in mind that if he wants to buy a mac good enough to run recent games decently he's going to need to outlay twice as much as he would for a PC.
Sure, he could just use BootCamp, but seriously, why not just buy a PC?

I suggest that the OP finds a dv6 model in a shop somewhere, goes and has a look, and then goes and compares it to a MBP.

More than twice as much, in fact.

I'm going window shopping today - found a store with that model in stock. Gonna give it a look-see.

I would definitely since you asked so nicely, as soon as I find myself sitting on one ie. I know what he wants and I realize for what he needs a MacBook will be be quite a bit more expensive than a similarly speccd hp or dell. Which is why I told him NOT to get one. All his dreams of getting a gaming laptop will be shattered for life (just like mine) once he owns a mac. When my MacBook died this December I seriously considered getting an hp or dell gaming laptop but couldn't. As much as i liked the idea of PC gaming, i just couldnt stand the thought of using windows again. And the fact is that I never had much issue with win before I actually owned a mac. It was only after my mac experience when I started disliking windows and the ways it works. Hence my advice of not getting a mac ever or you'll be spoiled and restricted from choice for life.

Now how exactly am I on a high horse here? Didn't u just say the same thing I said? Ie, Not to get a mac here?

So just out of curiosity - if I had to choose between two laptops with identical specs, but different screen sizes, would it make any difference on performance?

One is 15.6", and the other is 17.3". Internally they are identical (down to resolution as well).
Would there be any kind of difference?

Edit: Would the battery life be less, since it has to power a larger screen?

I would think that the battery life would be less, however I would expect performance to be the same.

Oh, right, I had a thread here.

I got the HP linked in my first post and while I haven't tried any intensive games on it yet, I'm pretty damn happy with everything else - particularly the resolution. Speaking of which, reading TA at 1080p sucks. :p
