I agree with cowtruck, but you still should not just discount it now, since it will be unfair for people who pay full price your heroes. That will discourage them a lot.
I didn't have too much trouble with them. I mainly focused on fully upgraded archer towers and necromancer towers. I also built a few warrior towers at strategic choke points, not too much though. I think the trick is high damage, since many of the new mobs have high health. The Necromancer towers provide good fodder to slow everything down. Definitely upgrade the shrine and use it only on the big guys.
Sigh. I finally broke down and watched a YouTube video of someone beatings dunes of despair on iron. Yeah, so I was supposed to know about the cute trick where you Spoiler shitspam genies? . I don't think the level is beatable without using mercs or items, kind of a cheesy iron challenge IMHO. The new water levels are pretty cool, the pathing of the enemies is wildly unpredictable and you can easily get caught with your pants down. I doubt too many people are getting three stars on their first playthrough.
I look at it this way, if I waited for the sale I would have saved a couple bucks, but who really wants to wait to play such a great TD game? It's worth the extra 2 bucks to not have to wait. If anyone is really surprised by the sale, you're either new to the App Store, or just like to complain. Having said that, the heroes are overpriced. Anything more then $1 is too much to me.
I wanted to play it, but waited for the sale due to a backlog of games. I jumped on the sale and am loving the game although the challenge level ramps up pretty quickly. Perhaps that is to encourage buying heroes, but like you I would not pay more then a dollar each for them.
He's okay. Nothing too special. Same for the other new hero. I've already wrote my opinions on this thread a few times that Sha'tra is the best hero so far so I don't think anyone else would compare to him right now.

Noob question Noob question, how do I upgrade my Hero's skill's? & can I move my hero to a different part of the map?
You can upgrade heroes from Hero room in map mode. Moving is easy, just touch hero and touch again where you want to move him.When screen is cluttered with enemies and friends alike, you can easily select hero by touching his picture in top left corner.
I got the hd version with the sale and have nearly completed everything on normal mode. It's disappointing to hear that for a paid game, the heroes can't be unlocked through hardcore play through veteran difficulty or something along those lines. Please let me know if I'm wrong about this. Also, the encyclopedia isn't properly updated for the new fish characters, as they only have a frame instead of a photo when you click on them, at least in the hd ipad version.
Sadly, the heroes can only be unlocked with real money. There was a hero sale a couple weeks ago, but the prices weren't substantially reduced, so I only picked up one (the wizard). A lot of people claim the free ones are great when maxed out, so there's that. I have Alric up to level 7 and he's pretty good.
