I thought the exact same thing when I read that post. I am sure other companies like McDonalds and Coca Cola will use the same pricing strategy. "Here is your Big Mac combo meal sir. Have a nice day. By the way, I don't want to nag, but could we maybe have some money for that?"
This game is more like you buy a Big Mac for $4,99 but the meat is missing. Oh you didn't know the meat was missing? Here, it is available for just another $6,99. Some people may find it enjoyable without the meat. Probably the same guys who heavily invest in whatever companies (like if they had the money).
Or you can buy a complete pizza, but you have the option to pay extra for optional toppings. Sound familiar?
Nothing was missing from what you ordered. Devs were very upfront about what would be included in base price and what would be iap. This is like you ordered a Big Mac, but then got mad the milkshake to "complete" the meal wasn't included. According to some of you here, you would be justified in stealing the milkshake so that you wouldn't be cheated out of your complete meal experience.
Lots of older games had two versions, and then the sequel was universal. I can't believe this game didn't follow that trend, it's just a cash grab. I understand if you want to give the iPhone version a smaller file size, but there's no good reason not to make the HD version universal. A lot of recent games take this approach.
Whatever it is, it's certainly not a cash grab. Almost no one will buy both versions of the game, therefore the publisher doesn't make more money this way.
I would suggest Nivus because he does the most damage which is important when the blobs are vulnerable. You only have a short time before they recombine, regardless of how well you are holding them at bay with barracks and reinforcements so a blocking hero isn't really necessary.
Yes, he has some useful skills, his damage is good, he is fast, and he is ranged. However, he is not the best paid hero.
This probably has already been asked, but if I get this, will there be any reason to keep the old one around?
Actually, that isn't a buffalo. It's a bantha, another Star Wars: Episode IV reference. Goes with the Tusken Raiders.
Yes I would say so. I have both Nivus and Dierdre. The effects and crowd control of Nivus is superb. The buffs and healing from Dierdre are great too though.

Untrue, beat the game without using any crystals. Although I did grind a bit to level up (non-IAP) heroes and earn more stars for upgrades.
Cross version hero purchases? I grabbed the iPad and iPhone versions (same with the original). Does anyone know if they have anything in place to share your IAPs (at least heroes) between both versions? I'm guessing not, but it would be nice. I play when I can at home, but knocking off a level or two on breaks on my phone happens a lot more often. Edit: As an iOS dev I probably should have known (though I haven't implemented IAPs before), but since they are two different versions they'll have different bundle IDs and that won't allow retrieval. Anyone know if they have had made any plans to do hero bundles?
