Stroffolino Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Apr 28, 2009 1,100 8 38 Software Engineer Pennsylvania http://www.northernbytes.ca #5 Stroffolino, May 14, 2015 Let's face it - endless runners, especially the current trend of uber-difficult ones can be unpleasant. Who hasn't felt the urge to throw their ipod/iphone against a wall? And there's something a little morbid about a game that is literally endless and can never be won. In the end, everyone dies - it's only a question of when. King of Up starts out quite easy - my one year old delights in playing her way through the first stage, squealing "Up!" again and again. That being said, King of Up does get quite hard quite quickly - there's currently only one player other than myself that's made it even through level 2-1 (which introduces bombs), though I'm sure that'll soon change. The bulk of "King of Up's" content is broken up into a set of bite-sized stages, introducing obstacles and increasing difficulty incrementally. These stages each have a dedicated speed-run leader-board. The player is given a small set of reserve extra lives and in-level checkpoint platforms for a more forgiving progression. 1-3 Stars are awarded for completing a stage all or mostly unscathed. Your best time for each level you complete can be optionally watched in a stylized sepia toned replay by tapping on your time on the level picker screens. After defeating the first four levels, the first of two head-to-head levels is unlocked. In "VS-A" you can race an opponent in a randomly generated course. On the iPhone/iPod, it's pass&play, with races against the opponent's shadow. On the iPad, the racing takes place simultaneously on the same device. In "VS" challenges, the players are both given extra lives, so they can afford to be aggressive. After the first 8 levels, an endless "Infinity Mode" is unlocked, where the player is challenged to get as far as they can without dying. After the first 12 levels, a more difficult "VS-B" race is unlocked, featuring all obstacle types. After completing all basic levels, my favorite, "Random" mode is unlocked. There, the player is challenged to complete a randomly generated (but finite) stage with just a single extra live. This is perfect for a quick pick up and play session at train station, as unlike endless mode, you can end your game on a high note. Along the way, extra characters are available to unlock, each with a unique way of going up - from a gravity-defying yogi to a solder equipped with state of the art jetpack, to novice superheros. I hope folk enjoy this game, and would very much enjoy hearing impressions from folk that give it a go. chief78 Well-Known Member Jul 24, 2012 2,317 7 38 #6 chief78, May 14, 2015 I think it's important to note that there are actual levels, so they end. When I started reading the above post I was thinking "this is an infinite runner". It has an endless mode, but further along after completing some of the stages (as mentioned in the previous post). One thing I can't figure out is what the gold coins are for. I know the 2nd character (Angela) is opened this way, but then literally all the other characters are opened through progression. I'm assuming that there will be updates with more characters to spend the gold on, but once Angela is unlocked, as of now, they're useless. All in all, a fun game with good replay value. There's an achievement linked to coin collecting. They are a shiny distraction in vs. mode. And they can cause the player to hesitate (since almost everything else hurts you). The number of coins collected is being tracked and you rightly guess I plan on adding things to spend virtual currency on in an update.
