We hope to maintain a pure deckbuilding experience: no RPG-style upgrades, and no equipment upgrading. Build a unique deck for every playthrough, and defeat powerful enemies. Four game modes are available for players to enjoy: [Story Mode] - Here you can experience the world, following the main character on a bizarre journey, fighting to unravel the hidden truths of this world. [Abyssal Mode] - In this game mode, you can fight your way through randomly generated levels and monster encounters. Select from multiple difficulties for a true challenge. [Weekly Challenges] - Every Monday the format changes, providing a unique challenge for players to overcome. Earn points for successful completions. At the end of the week, the players with the highest scores will be awarded prizes. [Tower of Souls] - A pure PvP playground. You won’t have access to your talent tree or any outside buffs, just you and a deck devised to defeat the competition. Challenge yourself and improve. If you enjoy challenging roguelike deck builders, and you’re tired of RPGs that call themselves “card games”, then we hope you enjoy Journey of Abyss. But the adventure part doesn‘t fit too well for me. When you repeat parts of the game (and since it‘s a roguelike you have to do that quite often), then you have to click through a lot of dialog. But there‘s also an endless mode besides the story mode. Again, interface and production are fantastic. ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,774 1,003 113 #3 ste86uk, Jun 20, 2020 This sounds interesting, I’d love to know more if more people have been playing. sharfaust Well-Known Member Jul 1, 2013 339 75 28 #4 sharfaust, Jun 20, 2020 Not a bad Roguelike card game! I love the production value. Definitely worth 0.99, in my opinion. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #15 Echoseven, Jun 23, 2020 After a bit more playing around: What annoys me most is it requires a constant internet connection. There are some “live” elements and multiplayer to justify it, I guess, but I’m not a fan. The card combat is nothing to write home about (so far). It’s decent, it’s functional, but I don’t see how it could have the scalability of some other games. Coming from the incredibly fluid Slay the Spire, it feels somewhat rigid. Each turn is mostly: You draw five cards, you play however many cards you have the energy for, You end the turn. Your enemy does their attack (which you’re shown in advance), then repeat. You unlock relics and cards along the way, buffs, and there’s a level-up tree, which is intriguing. There’s potential here and it’s not bad in any way, but the combat itself is just not especially exciting. Take this with a grain of salt though, as I’d like to play more and see if this changes further down the track. Now where this game absolutely shines is it’s presentation and story. The art is beautiful, many things are animated (like leaves in a forest) that make it feel like great care has been put in. And the story... it has some technical issues (language wise), but damn did it immediately take a turn I didn’t expect. Without spoiling anything: madness, cannibalism, insanity, redemption(?), love, more madness. Like before, I want to see where it goes - but I want to see where it goes. Sorry :\ I wish devs would slowly ease out of that phase of making their games online. It's easy to see how bad it is with how many dead server based games have amassed over the past few years. It is unfortunately a rather common occurrence on mobile, not so on pc games. By all means play the crap out of an online game on release, but don’t expect it to be there a year later. Ringerill and Ijipop like this. Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #18 Ringerill, Jun 25, 2020 Tried it since I'm a lover of deck building games and roguelikes and my opinion is really mitigated at the moment... Right from the start, having to have an internet connection made me cringe but at least I didn't have to create an account for that. However, it happened several times that I just had to put down the phone for some time and when I came back, the connection was lost and my progress as well. This bugs me A LOT since it is in conflict with the "constant" internet requirement. If you are constantly connected then I expect the progress to be constantly saved... And man, your connection has to be quite high: I've got disconected from the game (and of course lost ~20minutes of progress) just because I went into another room and went just 1 Wifi bar down. Also, my phone heated up way to much just by playing ~30 minutes and it drained my battery like crazy. Is it just badly coded or is something happening in the background that I'm now aware of? I just don't like this Apart from that, the gameplay in itself does not bring anything new to the genre: you have attack and skill cards, relics, buffs, new cards after battles, etc. This game seems to contain 118 cards in total but you have access to around 80 at first and unlock others by progressing in the story and other challenges. I would however point out some problems: during your turn, you have to place your cards in a sequence and then press Play to use them. However, there is no way of replacing them once they are on the board... Also, some cards have effects immediately, some others take effect after you press play, it's not really intuitive. The biggest problem are cards that can boost your attack (or weaken the enemy) but you have no way of knowing how much damage you will deal in the end until you actually place the card. You can always do some calculations in your head but come on, why can't it be done automatically? There are some mistranslations but nothing major. However, there are no descriptions of some effects for instance. Sure I guessed correctly what Perseverance was (or whatever the name of the +1 Shield/point effect is) but there should be a description for everything imo. I also came across bugs with some cards mechanics that didn't work as intended. I'm more concerned about some daily and limited features. I saw something saying 6/6 tries and I already don't like it. There are also some daily challenges that can only be done after finishing the story to give you some internal currency to unlock buffs and cards but I don't really want to farm my way through on a daily basis. I don't have any problem farming in a card game (I'm still enjoying Pirates Outlaws for instance) but I don't like to be tied to it daily. Still, the game looks nice, plays nice and has an actual story with even some cutscenes. The art is pretty, the music even if not too present feels good and adds to the atmosphere. I haven't tried the multiplayer section yet and I don't really plan to tbh but the fact that it exists might interest some competitive people In the end, I will probably keep it on my phone just to see if the dev updates it and maintains it. Night of the Full Moon was also online only but in the end, they removed the constant connection so maybe this one will reach that point too. stubbieoz likes this.
