Great job guys! Been waiting all day to play this (downloaded at work but wanted to play without distraction). The simple controls work really well; there is a lot you can do with just the jump and lunging attack. I've made it to level 2-3. It's neat how it gets darker the deeper you go so your dude uses his lantern. I like the choice of powerups on offer after each segment too. There are fewer people on the leaderboard than I expected, and that's taking into consideration this just came out today. 44 was the amount last time I checked. If you think this looks cool, give it a try. I know I'll be spending a lot more time with it. On a side note, It would be really awesome if we could talk Andy into uploading a video of his gameplay. I was thinking of all the moves you could do if you were a quick thinker/had quick reaction time and good ol' Andy came to mind. Then I saw his score. :O Oh yeah, and if you're familiar with Leap Day like I am (got all fruit and medals for every day since May 11), the controls feel really similar, at least IMO. That seems to be helping me a little This is a relatively tricky game but man, you combine double jump with double mid-air attack, etc. and I could see people dominating. Level sections are very well designed too.
You have a valid point here. Rayman also has the option to use a game pad in some of its auto runners and it uses the traditional platforming controls.
I have a question. So far I'm REALLY loving this game! However one of the perks I chose was the one that said I would be resurrected once after my deaths blow. Well I died and I wasn't resurrected. The game ended. The perks are only for that section? They don't stay for the entire current game you are playing? Why didn't I resurrect? I absolutely love the gameplay, art style, on screen control scheme! Absolutely awesome job Ravenous! You nailed these aspects! Billy
Perks should stay for the duration of your run. Not sure why that would have happened. We will have to look into it as I've only heard it happen one other time for someone. We've never experienced it ourselves though. The perk should should resurrect you one time. Thanks, we're pretty proud of this one!
Dear developers, are there any plans to add some permanent unlockable goals to work towards? Like Downwell for example, it kept me playing past my limits just on the premise of different "styles" and color palettes to unlock with coins. I am asking this on both the Journey Below and Reigns threads because 1) imo these are the two best games of this - and previous weeks 2) they both are designed for quick fun session that can also be drawn out 3) the "unlockable goals" i think can apply to both, take Downwell for Journey Below and the castle building of Rogue Legacy for example in Reigns and 4) i bought and loved games from both Devolver Digital and Ravenous Games, who produce solid and premium priced games even in this freemium age, and are active in the forums interacting with us. I have to say i am buying both Journey and Reigns regardless of unlockables or not, it's just that when i find such fun games i want them to keep me interested past the "highscore" with some minor gameplay gimmic - because this much fun is as excellent as it is rare.
16,233 so far. I enjoy this more and more each time I play. Back to work on unlocking those other two modes!
Liking this a lot, obviously inspired by Downwell, but utilises its slower pacing to make it feel like a very different game. Recommend this for sure!
Devs, any chance to of like a downward swipe to make my charecter go down the walls faster so I don't have to wait for the slow slide against the wall thus letting me play the lvls faster if I want to ? Maybe there is a reason you DONT have this but let me know your thoughts =]
Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Pretty decent game. Reminds me a bit of downwell, with it's descending and upgrade system. The learning curve and soundtrack is great. Levels are procedurally generated. This keeps the levels fresh, but it also means the leveldesign is not fantastic. Sometimes you lose your combo-multiplier and there's not much you could've done. Overall I think it's a cool game to play in short sessions.
Ok so I decided not to go for score and keep "combo meter" up and beat the game first try doing that (including last boss) I find if your NoT going for score the game is really easy Can't see the difference in hard mode, just speed ran to lvl 2-2 then died just to check it out, Endless seems more of the same but I'll drive more into that later.
Hard mode you start with less health, max health is decreased as well and the game runs about 10% faster.
Holy crap are you serious lol. I haven't even come close to beating it yet. I hate you. Just saying. Lol Billy
Congrats Ravenous and WobblyWare on the nice review from TA's Rob Funnell. And a good review, Rob! http://toucharcade.com/2016/08/12/journey-below-review/
Don't mean to knock the review, bought it just after reading. I would pay more than this game's price for the soundtrack alone. 16 bit, chip tunes, hip hop vibe. Great job dev's. Let's all not forget to iTunes review! In the future maybe permanent unlocks, or a shop in the beginning. Still fun as can be. I agreed with comment above about the pace, a little slower than Downwell, but I'm acclimating rythym faster.
