Joe Dever's Lone Wolf was successfully nominated for Touch Arcade forums' Game of the Week poll. Voting will occur over the next three days at the link below. Developers may not vote for their own games, new user votes subject to review. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=209448
Awesome but insane I love the game and already purchased the season's pass, I am at the last location of the village and probably almost the end of the available content. And I want to break my phone. Twice now I have tried to walk around and fight a few battles. Not to get stronger before the end, but because I'd like to max my equipment before I put down the game for the couple month until the next chapter. But twice, I got stuck between towns, fought Three battles in a row, tried to meditate and got attacked. And even in baby mode I get killed by the lowest mob, slashing my face twice and dealing 800 dmg every goddamn time. This made me waste at least three hours, because the checkpoint system is not what it should be, the game should remember Iv'e been through 4 battles and bought stuff. This is insane, yet awesome in every other aspect.
Didn't break my phone by the way, I just tried 9 more times, and finally got a QTE that left me the time to heal on the first turn. I think it hasn't been said yet, but this needs a -select language prompt- in the game options, I like having my phone set to french, but I dislike getting translated versions when the words of the author are often superior in their original form. Thanks
I tried again, and I'm just not good enough. As much as I wanted to vote for this game on this weeks poll, I can't in good conscience do so.
As I said, I had faith and it's proving accurate. Can't wait for the update! As to the complaints about the length, if you're buying this to play once, you're doing it wrong. Look at any choose your own adventure book, they're smaller than the average book. It's their choice, the fact that the story can be rewritten multiple times, that makes it fun and exciting. The second I can pass through battles without wanting to punch a kitty, I'll be snapping up the seasons pass.
Just to be clear, i think the real textbook adventures of lonewolf were much harder (if played without cheating) I love the game but the page making noise to remember you to turn it makes me mad. Also i would like to change the language in-game.
Flawed but with huge potential. First let me say I was a huge fan of the originals and owned all the books, played through many times and then ran a long tribute pen and paper rpg campaign in the lone wolf world. This game is beautiful, the world is immersive and there are many fine touches, for instance the look of the image as it moves from sepia to colour to initiate combat. The story seems quite linear. The world is quite binary, morally, which is less to my taste as an adult, but true to the original books. Combat I find hard, and a chore. Much has been said in constructive criticism already. I have three points to add:- 1) Of the three attributes, Kai Power and Endurance seem to recharge quickly in fights. It is weird then that they don't fully recharge between fights. 2) Why would I use a sword other than the Sommerswerd in fights? I am a Weaponskill Swordmaster. I don't ask to use the holy flame strike power all the time, just use the most sacred Kai weapon in combat. Seems odd, and a weird design decision. 3) I don't like Mindblast being a separate massive drain on the Kai power reserve. It means you have to choose to use it OR the Sommerswerd. In the books, Weaponskill and Mindblast added to give you an edge. Now they seem exclusive. Not sure I see a point in Mindblast when you may as well use the Sword Blast instead. I'll add my voice to the previous poster who said it was disappointing to jump in 'with surprise' in the second fight, only to find three completed unsurprised ready Giaks who quickly toasted my already badly injured and exhausted self. I'd sooner have used Camouflage or had some other choice (really, the missing element so far)... Overall, the feeling is that making combat really hard substitutes for there being meaningful different paths to take, interactions to negotiate and puzzles to solve. A pity; the look and atmosphere of the app hold massive potential. I look forward to seeing if part 2 makes better use of that framework.
I agree with the post above. I think the way combat is now detracts from the experience. I never had problems with QTE before, but sometimes I just can't do the circle thing no matter what, and the result is death upon death, as 5 x 1 was not enough already. Otherwise, I loved act I, especially the atmosphere. (For those who compares this with Sorcery!, they are completely different experience, it's impossible to compare them -- the best thing to do is buy both because they are the best gamebooks by far)
I agree for the most part (i also had all the books) but i still managed to beat the 1st act without changing difficulty by spamming stun attacks (offhand sword/axe and mind-blast stuns). They rule as long as you can get the qte right.
Big post about the questions/advices/issues you're writing. Sorry if I can't reply to every single request but some of them are related to the game design, others are bugs or improvements or whatever. We already fixed this issue and it will be included in the upcoming update. We're going to add that in a future update or Act 2. Without cheating? I think that every member of the dev team (myself included) cheated at least once with the old paper gamebooks. So, you're great! Same as above about the language selector. We fixed the Circle QTE today and also the horizontal arrow swipe for dodging.
Just beat Act 1 (without ever lowering difficulty ). The game is awesome: incredibly immersive, challenging, and ultimately rewarding. I agree that combat could be more context sensitive (when you catch enemies by surprise, for example). It's also frustrating when you end up in a situation where you are killed before taking a single action. That said, tactical choices are consistently rewarded: how you prepare before battle, making use of all your attacks and skills, taking defensive stances, etc. I completely disagree with the notion that combat is "a chore."; it consistently got my pulse racing and cursing at the screen when a Glak (sp?) got a lucky dodge. Can't wait for act 2: in fact, already preordered to support the dev.
This was the line for me: "Lone Wolf isn't a game you fire up while waiting in line at Starbucks. To get the most out of it, you need to treat it like a console game or a proper book - clear out an hour or so of your time, maybe grab a glass of wine, and allow yourself to fall into the story. The experience that you'll get in return will be well worth the investment." I've got to check this out at some point! Sounds divine... DBC
I finally tried this and it so far it has been up there with the better gamebooks I've played lately as far as structuring goes. I have only just completed Chapter 1 Act 1 so some of the things I might mention may not be relevant with longer play. In brief - Presentation is top notch, writing style is also great, I'm finding the amount of different icons a little hard to sink in but I will eventually get it, does feel very linear so far, page turn prompting is not really needed after the first time, Facebook icon tends to break the lovingly crafted interface when displayed, while I think combat breaks the flow I actually enjoy it more than I thought I would,. Overall a great example of a digital gamebook and the mature writing style is welcomed after some of the other efforts by the games competition (it doesn't do anything adult but the word crafting is generally good). Great work, look forward to more.
