The island would be a refuge for malfunctioning or damaged bombers coming or going. An obvious target for a US amphibious assault, the Japanese had reinforced the garrison and dug miles of tunnels the length and breadth of the island. Their goal was to inflict maximum casualties on the Americans to force them to reconsider the seemingly inevitable invasion of Japan. The resulting battle was brutal, even by the standards of the Pacific War. - Expansive campaign spanning the battle of Iwo Jima from 19th Feb to 22nd Mar 1945. - Digital re-imagining of a classic strategy board-game. - Re-create the military strategy utilised by US forces on Iwo Jima. - In-depth tutorial and in-game tips. - Large Hex-based campaign map which encompasses the entire island of Iwo Jima. - Weather system with direct implications on gameplay. - Comprehensive information database covering key aspects of the invasion of Iwo Jima. - Accurately re-created 3D models of the tanks, planes, battleships and bunkers involved in the WWII conflict. - Adjustable zoom allowing classic board game mode with digitally recreated counters, or get close into the action with detailed 3D models. Basically it is a port of boardgame IWO: Bloodbath in the Bonins, a solitary game which you play as Allies against -- well, the odds. Just like the Vietnam Air War game last year. After burnt by Nuts, I would proceed with caution, but since there is a nice refund system out there, I am going to try it out tonight and report back. Son of Anarchy Well-Known Member Oct 5, 2015 717 130 43 Male Shadow Runner Australia #4 Son of Anarchy, Dec 24, 2015 I didn't want to mention it, but I'm a bit burnt out by HexWar in general, hence my hesitation. You get burnt a few times then learn it's probably best not to stick your hands directly into the fire no matter how pretty it looks. Thanks for your reply. mzinn Well-Known Member Jan 5, 2014 770 0 16 #5 mzinn, Dec 24, 2015 I had such hope for Nuts but couldn't continue & had to bail. Curious to hear your thoughts on this one. Thanks! currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #6 currymutton, Dec 25, 2015 (As written over at Pocket Tactics) After playing 2 games (incomplete) to experience the system, I have not played the physical version before, but I think the presentation is alright. The tutorial is rather short but it runs through the different phases of a turn which is fair enough. It is clear and the player should feel confident to go on. Each game starts by choosing between Eastern and Western beach landings, with the latter seems less resistant. The player has a fixed number of troops for deployed, in reserve and for replacement Fortunately there is an online manual to check the details out, including winning condition et al. You can play several games at once and save it. Current game can be loaded straight right in using "Continue" button. The game feel just "alright" so far. 3D units are present when zoomed in, actually it is quite "odd" looking to me. However, it is kinda glitch when the zoomed all-out view does not show bombardment markers. I am also worried about the replayability value and hope those who have played the physical version would enlighten me in this aspect. Will report back later. Dragan Well-Known Member Aug 21, 2014 365 7 18 Belgium #7 Dragan, Dec 25, 2015 HexWar simply releases to many titles. Quantity over quality has made me stop investing in this war game factory al together and I asked a refund for Nuts. currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #8 currymutton, Dec 26, 2015 (Again cross-post from Pocket Tactics forum) Update #2 Finally finish a game of which I lose. Yes, read the Force manual, Luke... Again, as one who has never played the original, this game is full of surprises, not that edge-on-the-seat kinda excitement you find in Phantom Leader, Japanese units can come out of nowhere if the sector is not in US control Side note: I happen to note that Japanese units can move during her only attack phase, but some how the game does not seem to know what to do with it and stays there. The game cannot proceed and I have to quit the game and roll back to the start of turn. There are a number of random factors aside from random Japanese unit strength, weather plays a major role on the movement speed and the bombardment is not reliable. Combat results are determined by the die roll. Too bad, there is no die roll animation but there is a list showing details of each throw and the outcome each throw implies The number of turns available seems not exactly 16 as the manual says, I need to figure out the how to keep your units alive while having them to do their job. Replacement is crucial too. So far, no game-stopping bug and except for the issues found, the game is pretty solid. Let's pray if HexWar is willing to keep the game updated. Will report back when I have more findings. D1vi8 Well-Known Member May 22, 2014 234 5 18 Belgium #9 D1vi8, Dec 26, 2015 This is probably the Banzaï attack? I bought the game too. I like these kind of games. The manual in the game is good, but I would like to have a printed version of it and of the different tables. Didn't find it on the internet, only some "update rules" word document. I only played a bit, like the game so far. Things are well explained once you are playing. A pity the app closes when the ipad is locked. I would like to see the tables ingame as wel as a pop-up for the sort of terrain a unit is in (terrain is very important), because you can't see the sort of terrain when a unit is standing on it. Or maybe I am missing something? I don't think this game is for everyone. If you like wars and battles, I guess you will like this game. mzinn Well-Known Member Jan 5, 2014 770 0 16 #10 mzinn, Dec 27, 2015 Hard to stay away despite having some reservations. I'm going to go ahead & give it a try. I sure hope this doesn't turn out the way Nuts! did for me. D1vi8 Well-Known Member May 22, 2014 234 5 18 Belgium #11 D1vi8, Dec 27, 2015 I never played the boardgame. I know now you have Japanese artillery, HQ, AT, AA and Infantry. For the Japanese Artillery track it is important to destroy HQ and Artillery. For tanks it is important to know witch units are AA and AT. Japanese strenght is hidden until you fight them. But I guess it is ment to be that the sort of unit is also hidden until you fight them and after the fight the unit is hidden again? And in that same way, after Japanese bombardment, the artillery is hidden again and you have to memorize that? (Sorry for my bad English) There is a lot to take account of during the game. Take Mount Suribachi, take airfields so you can strike harder. Destroy HQ and artillery to weaken the Japanese. Not bad at all ... currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #12 currymutton, Jan 7, 2016 Further tries during the holiday are summarized as follows 1. UI issues pointed out in the earlier posts are not game-breaking, but definitely reduce the level of enjoyment a bit, hope the developer is around hearing this. 2. The game is hard to master but it is fun as no 2 games is the same 3. Really need to have some guide for newbie like me (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
