That's true. But the total, overall reception on those phones is less, because the antenna is on the inside. I'd rather have the antenna on the outside, move my hand away from that part and instantly get better reception, then just not have that extra reception with a 3GS. (I believe the overall effect of covering the antenna on a 4, may bring the reception down, but not down below what a 3GS would give you in the first place.) I've been making calls in so many areas where I just couldn't before on a 3GS. Back in the days when all antenna on cell phone stuck out, or remember when you had to pull them out? It made a difference, if you pulled them out or not. I don't understand why the expectation is for the reception to be the same, with the antenna covered, and not?
Just bought one on ebay. £600 for a new iPhone 4 32GB, factory unlocked. It took me quite some time to pluck up the courage to do it though - my cursor was hovering over the "buy it now" button for quite some time. There better not be any problems - at least I have the seller's address so if anything goes wrong, I'll be over there straight away knocking on their door
So I just got another call from the apple rep handling my case. Turns out my iPhone still hasn't shipped, BUT he fixed the error and will get a tracking number for me by Monday. In better news, he says I'll still be getting my bumper AND the dock! Now I'm not going to hold my breath but I'm happy again! Just hope I don't keep jinxing myself by updating you guys...
So apparently Apple has owned up to the signal strength issue on the iPhone 4, says it's software, and they'll be issuing a "fix" in a "couple of weeks." Except the "fix" isn't. No admission that there's a problem with touching the antenna. So, whoever had "change the number of bars it shows" in the pool, step up and claim your prize. Me? I'm getting a little annoyed, because they're not acknowledging what is clearly, obviously, and demonstrably a hardware issue, though apparently not for everyone. Still, I feel like Apple is really ducking the issue here. It was one thing when Steve was being coy, but this is ridiculous.
I noticed that too. Surely if it's a software issue it wouldn't have affected the data rate quite so drastically? All those images from speedtest.net were what, coincidence?

Or how about just getting an iPhone glove or case instead of a rubber bracelet...? Wouldn't that seem a little more productive? Besides that, we shouldn't have to use things like that in order to keep our signal. This shouldn't be an issue at all and needs to be resolved, not repaired with handy work.
Had any luck at O2 store mate? My ebay order went pear shaped, seller cancelled the auction. So I went to the O2 store as soon they opened this morning at 9:00, massive queue. Then a worker came out and told us that they had all been sold . So then I went to the Apple store where the staff seemed much more friendly and knowledgeable. They put me on a priority list, so when they have them back in stock they'll e-mail me and I can go and pick it up. Now it's just a matter of waiting....
When are the white ones out? If they are any longer I'm hoping HTC will show off a HD3 with Windows Phone 7 that tempts me away from the iPhone 4 lol.
I did have some luck pal. The staff messed me about for the majority of the day, but I was lucky to have a very nice bloke I've known for ages happen to be working there today. He gave us a heads up that they were in stock but no one else knew. So me and my girlfriend sat back and were the first ones to walk out with our phones. It's worth the wait mate, keep up the chase!
Thanks a lot bro! Still feels like I'm dreaming and I've gotta get up in the morning to redo what I just did today! Congrats to you on getting the free dock and bumper! (You old charmer).
I got mine yesterday, in the states. Best Buy screwed up my pre order and I had to wait a while longer but finally I got it. Retina display and form factor are the most notable changes. Visiting certain sites gives that ink on paper look. It is a big leap from my old 3G. Just the speed and processing power alone leaves the 3G as a distant memory. With that said I have had signal and proximity sensor problems. My signal bars change constantly now when in the hand (no case yet) and standing still. When on a call the proximity sensor doesn't turn the screen off when it is close to my face. Will wait for the software update and if nothing changes after I apply the update I will be headed to an Apple store.
That's the sorta thing that can be tweaked with software, so I expect a patch for that. Though then again some people don't have the problem so it could be hardware lol.
My girlfriend and I both have the signal issue, but I had no bars and still made a call that was perfectly clear. She has a case on hers now and it's eradicated the problem completely. I'm hunting for an awesome case for myself now and a screen protector as this thing is a finger print nightmare.
I've had some of the best moments in ages all day on FaceTime. Absolute best thing I can remember in a long time.
