I've seen some other sites suggest this as well I don't think apple would be that stupid though. I guess time will tell.
I really don't think it will happen unless the contractless iPhone becomes cheaper. 1) Not everyone wants a new phone -- some people just want an MP3 player that has some smart capabilities. 2) Some people prefer physical keys for things like texting. 3) Not everyone wants a data plan or internet everywhere they go -- wifi is increasingly common, so it's not a big deal for some people. 4) The iPod Touch is thinner than the iPhone also.
Unless the iPhone comes at an affordable price with no contract... no chance. No iPod Touch means no kids buying games from the App Store. That's a lot of kids.
The iPod Touch is too much of a cash cow for Apple to consider such a move. Besides, what would be the point of spending extra cash to put in more components that half the user base would never actually use, let alone fork out the extra cash to pay for it? This would be a bad move on their part. The day that happens is the day I drop the iPod as my PMP/gaming device.
If so, I'm not getting it. I already have an Android, and I'm not going to get an iPhone, even if it's contract-less.
I don't think they'll get rid of it, I think they're going to align it more closely with the iPhone. Similar to the iPad, they'll be considered much the same device except you can get a wifi version with an iPod touch or a 3G version with a new iPhone
I think they're just stopping production of new any new iPod Touch's coming out and selling the old ones, this way it minimizes the cost of new hardware coming in.
Same thing as far as I'm concerned if they do that I'll pick up the next version of the galaxy player. Although I imagine a few more Android options would pop up in that scenario as well. Killing the Ipod Touch would probably be an effective way of stopping me buying another apple product.
Yeah, same here. I don't want a new phone or a data plan at all. I'm perfectly fine with my iPod Touch and wifi.
What if iPhone mini is out at a pretty cheap price that everyone can afford, then you won't make a pitch for iPod. First of all, is iPhone mini a real thing in the very near future?
What games can be played on it? All iPhone apps? If this happens, devs will have to develop downsized versions of their games-- iPod nano/regular iPod games like Sonic... Assuming that the iPhone mini is smaller than the iPhone.
Hate to break it to you but I could have had an iphone on contract for a lot less cash than I paid for an Ipod Touch but I don't want one and that won't change. If apple gets rid of the touch I'm done with them. I still don't think they will, it would just be stupid and people are just basing this whole thing on a single Icon text change.
Before discarding the iPod Touch, Apple would have to commodify the voice communication aspect of the iPhone. I don't see that happening in a long time, since WiFi is FAR from granted in many parts of the world. The other option would be to simply make the iPhone the new iTouch, available without contract for a low price. All sorts of obstacles to that one too.
I think a lot of people would be angry if they had AT&T or Verizon for their contract, finding out that there won't be a new iPhone coming out for the carrier. I think Apple needs a new product, dropping out both the iPhone and the iPod Touch (which would also make people angry), and have time to produce it, leaving people anxious and wanting more "Apple"
Just means I have no interest in an iphone mini nomatter how cheap it is. Theres several reasons I've chosen a Touch over an Iphone and money isn't one of them.
