Is the iPod touch second generation going to be the new Internet explorer 6? IE6 is a hopelessly outdated browser released in 2002-ish. It had huge popularity at the time of it's release. However, people hung on to it despite it's lack of web standards and overall crapiness. The web was held back by it's need to support IE6. Many companies, including Microsoft, encourage users to upgrade. It became a huge pain for developers to support. * Recently, it's share of the browser market fell below 10%. I see many parallels with the iPod touch 2G. It is hugely popular, and has widespread usage. More of friends have one than any other device. It lacks lacks basic game standards (Open GLS 2.0) and is difficult to develop for. But it's commanding market share means that it can't be ignored (Xenome, for example). And the 2G had twice the time on the market as most other iPods and iPhones. If the iPod touch 2G continues down the path of IE6, we shouldn't be expecting much progress. Developers spend tons of time getting their games to run at all on the iPod touch 2G. That's time they could be using to put in more content or better graphics. What do you think?
While I do see your point, I think you're exaggerating just a bit. I'm not gonna argue, I just think the situation is a little less extreme than you do.
yeah. almost everyone i know with an ipod touch or iphone has a 2nd generation or 8 gig 3g. :/ give it about 6 months to a year for iphone4's to become the standard.
Certainly hasn't stopped ID and Chair from making top-of-the-line games that are only supported by third and fourth generation devices.
You have a point, except there are barely more than ten or twenty apps which require newer/better hardware than the 2g. As long as the appstore is populated by primarily independent, small devs, the games will remain simple and require fewer resources.
Yup. I remember my 2nd gen iPod Touch running circles around my coworker's 2nd gen iPhone, and 32 GB, wow! Caved in and have an iPhone 4 now. 32 GB just doesn't cut it these days, but everything else on the device rocks. (And thanks to contracts it cost me less than my iPod, although it's got this $15/month data plan thing...)
