it could be my primary gaming device if:

    -it had better battery life.

-games have more content and play time to it

Battery life is a kicker isn't it? Compared to other mainstream handhelds it just doesn't stack up. Other than that, the iphone/itouch platform has been much more rewarding, much more fun than any of the other portables. The sheer number of games available, the number of good and unique games available, and the pricing system of the app store makes this platform FAR superior to devices like the psp or the DS. The innovation in software just can't be beat. The fact that often you are supporting indie developers also makes it for me. Sure the big players in the industry have their hand in the pot, but at least on this system, they aren't your only choices. Hardware wise, the form factor is pretty awesome too. Much less bulky than any other portable game system. Plus the control schemes that are available...just awesome.

my one complaint which I think everyone shares is battery life..2-3 hours at most. can't compare with other devices and is the only huge drawback for me

Yeah my other portable console is a Nintendo DSi but I use my iPod Touch for gaming way more.

The battery life for the iPod Touch is not a problem for me because I use a Mophie Juice Pack. It does not add that much bulk. If you have an iPhone, the battery back is much thinner.

I know it's probably hard to give an exact number...but how much extra play time does it give you? If it's like double the battery life that thing would be very nice to have.

Audio Playback: Up to 42 hours
Video Playback: Up to 7 hours

It definitely extends gaming time considerably.

Right now I'm playing PC games the most thanks to the great steam deals recently. My iphone is good for casual games but I have a DS and PSP for the more in depth experiences. I don't think I could use my iphone as a primary gaming platform though. It's basically my lifeline to everything and I don't want to kill the battery too much without buying external battery packs.

    Yeah :(

I would only get it if you are desperate for extra playing time. It does come in handy though on trips/long car rides when a wall charger is not accessible.

My main gaming platform has always been the PC, and still remains so. Also, the iPhone still hasn't got a decent RPG on it, especially in comparison to the PC (or other platforms, for that matter).

It actually doesn't get that hot. The only problem with it is that it's expensive and doesn't give you enough charge, imo.

in my experience it is practical as a charger, and since I have an iPhone, it will definitely extend my stand-by time significantly. If my phone is at 5%, and I switch it on, it will charge it to 100% if I'm not using it.

However it's not really that great at extending game time, the battery seems to drain much quicker if you're using the device for video or intensive gaming (3D, processor intensive, etc.) while it charges. I was playing Ravensword when I got a 10% battery warning, I switched it on, and got maybe an hour worth of play time until the JP was dusted (and it had been fully charged). When the JP ran out, my battery was around 25% and I played maybe another 20-30 mins until I got another 10% warning and had to call it quits.

Just get a $20 car/plane charger, and plug it in to the nearest car plug...thingy.

    That's what I do.

The results in this poll are interesting. I think I'm going to make another thread to find more about the average iPhone as a gaming platform user.
