I got the message and my next 5 games are original. Giving some serious thought to the direction to go in. I still feel there is a place for developers to try and improve existing games but for the next while I will put out some virgin games. I hope your comment is not bases on a surface look at the games.
There is a clear market for clones (look at every fps). Small incremental upgrades that have no wow factor will often get lost in a sea of clones. Origonal games have their own problems in that nobody is looking for them because it isn't like something they have played. This presents a different set of problems. Also a lot of people have a different idea of original to the reality. However if your original, first in the market and awesome the potential upside is much much bigger than a clone.
By nature I am a competitive person and a problem solver. Having a good game presented to me to see if there is a way to make it a better experience for players is an enjoyable challenge. In defense of myself I think I added noteworthy value with stickHero, 2048v2 and pianoTap and hope those who play them feel so too. Having said that and knowing creative people from my 20 years of owning art galleries and painting for a living I understand your comments, concern etc. I don't think WOW factor should be the sole goal because lets face it WOW mean walk on water and most games will never reach that level but well worth the developer's efforts.
Always a joy to see you join in. Not so sure why you are so nice, I was hoping for more zing. On the serious side, how did the seminar go? If you have a hard copy of your words to the developer community I would like to read them. truly appreciate and enjoy your honest input.
What gives you the right to take someone's game and then make small changes to it ? Then worst of all you piggy back off the name. 2048v2 ?!! Just apalling you did that. I don't believe as the boss you are oblivious to it. You know what you're doing yet you still act so naive like you didn't have a clue You still don't seem to think it's an issue as you 'enhanced' the original game !! Again if there were major changes to a game then fair enough. When Doom came out a huge range of FPS games came out. But they weren't called Doom 2.1 or had the same graphics. The engine was the same but graphics and storyline were all different. Still stunned at your surprise and your responses to criticism of your cloning and ridiculous names of your apps Look forward to your next game Monumeunt valley 2 as you feel you can make an enhancement to the original
The hell is this thread? Seriously? Upgrades to IP you don't own? lol Still though...improve 2048 all you want and call it whatever you'd like. 2048 deserves to be burnt to the ground for ripping off Threes! **** 2048.
Imagine I took a popular song, ummmm let's say " Smells Like Teen Spirit" reworded the chorus, then released it as "smells like teen spirit v2" claiming id made it better. I'd be torn a new arsehole by Nirvanas legal team and the general public. Should be the same with games. More should be done to stop such blatant shittery getting through the approval process.
Agreed if Apple and Google stopped allowing the use of a previous title in a new game then that would solve the problem.
I fail to differ with you re a small change. Had I taken an engine that enabled a car to go 200 miles per hour and increased it to 400 then it would be a major change, double the speed. With the 2048 game I improved the vertical horizontal moves (4 possible moves) and doubled it to 8 possible moves. In my world 2 times performance means major. That is but one change. I have some other major changes planned and will strongly consider naming it something else even though google and apple are flooded with 2048s and rightfully so because a developer is walking close to the line when he names a game that is a number which represents the goal of the game and then expects that it will be his. Like 3s or 5s or 6s etc. But then again some like walking close to the line.
Or you know? a dev with a moral compass could always not use someone elses name. If the "new game" is obviously ripped off from an existing popular one, that should be stopped too, regardless of title.
I am a tenderfoot in the business but from what I am reading it is hard to find true north on that moral compass. It seems 2048 is a ripoff of 3s and 2048 Ketchapp is a rippoff of the young guy who ripped off 3s and 1024. Can you shed some clarity on this. Who is ripping who off?
So your argument is "other people do it so why can't I do it too?"... Just because you can do something does not give you the right to. Furthermore, plenty of people do really awful things, it doesn't mean you should as well. Cloning a game is a bit of a grey zone but just adding v2 to the name is pretty obviously an attempt to leverage their user base (not a grey zone). Anyway, not saying the people you are ripping off are not ripping off someone else, but do you think it makes you any better than them if you are trying to market an app that is a blatant clone? If you want respect as a developer, this will not earn it from me. I am sure others would agree.
Everyone here avoids the last part of my question. It seems to be a topic you don't want to touch with a 10 foot pole. It seems you don't want to burn bridges. Step up. The v2 I agree it was a name mistake because I really did not need it. To much of a tenderfoot in the business and thought the multi names was the rule of the land.
Can you refresh me what the "last part of your question" was. We are up to the sixth page on this topic. Is it regarding people accused of making clones giving their stories?
It seems 2048 is a ripoff of 3s and 2048 Ketchapp is a rippoff of the young guy who ripped off 3s and 1024. Can you shed some clarity on this. Who is ripping who off and did they make enough changes to justify their game as an original.
To answer your questions 2048v2 is clear clone which have mechanics added which IMO make the game less appealing. I view them as downgrades. It removes a challenging element from the game which has good balance. The pianotap one isn't really a direct clone and there are plenty of tap type games. I made my own clone of it called flipping tiles where the tiles were 3D objects and they literally flipped their way down the screen https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/flipping-tiles/id878626712?mt=8 On the last one again the name make this a silly clone. It is questionable if it is an upgrade but the name just makes the conversation go to trying to leverage another brand.
I mean no offense in any way in my below comment. If this statement is a repeat, then I'm sorry. Let's just set up a fake scenario: You are a game designer who happened to make a popular game, although it didn't have everything your audience was looking for. You don't feel the need to implement these changes and leave the game in a similar state. Later on, a new developer releases a game which has a similar title and basically identical game mechanics. However, it has the additions you had been missing. Your current audience gravitates toward this new developer for this reason. Also, they may be unaware that this is a different developer and not you. You aren't upset at first, but then you become discontent that all your fans favor this new developer (remember, just a scenario). You lose money, you might be discouraged, and you feel as if this was an immoral act. How could they take your concept and make it a new app without discussing it with me? Just to place you in an original developer's shoes. No harm intended. I hope you can find success in making original games, not nearly identical versions of another's work. Game devopment is an art form in a way, you can make copies but you just don't tweak it and re-release it again.
