I know this thread might rub a few people up the wrong way (for which I apologize in advance), but I am genuinely curious how the word 'addicting' found its way into the English (American) language.

Having never been to America, I have no idea if this is a new or a long standing thing.

    Views anyone?

I was only curious as many use 'addicting' instead of 'addictive'.
Sorry for the oddness of my thread. Just curious:eek:

I dunno, I try to use "addictive" as much as I can, but I still seem to use "addicting" sometimes as well.
Language isn't a huge deal unless they can't understand the context of what you're saying. Or if you're writing some major report for a literature professor. ;)

The lamb gave its regards.......just before being swallowed, digested and....well....
I was curious when it came about. In the UK, we talk about a game being 'addictive', whereas in the US they say a game is 'addicting'.

I guess the English language is so organic...You say tomAYYto, and I say tomAHHto.....;)

Haha, I have a british friend who moved to Florida. He was in school and he asked a girl for a rubber (what you yanks call an 'eraser'). The girl freaked out, thinking that he was asking her for a condom, lol.

lol, nice example:). 'smoking a fag' also apparently has a slightly different 'colour' to it in the US:D

Yeah Addictive and Addicting are both proper words (according to my english major co-worker lady friend). They aren't bad. I'll tell you what's bad, people that say "I spelt that word wrong" instead of "I spelled that word wrong". That pisses me off. That and when people say "Nuke-u-ler" Instead of "Nu-clear". Grrr....

Addicting is used in the hyperbolic past subjunctive of the present tense.

Addictive is the present pronoun of the indicative indicated in the conjunctive before the subject.

If you say that you'll be "smoking a fag" in the US...you'll most likely be detained by the police on suspicion of planning a murder and a hate crime.

So...to my UK friends out there...be careful with that stuff.

That doesn't define "addicting" though...only "addict". It's a search result page, and "addict" is the result of searching for "addicting".

    However:

    "Addicting" from Wiktionary

So, apparently started by us Yanks :)p), but also, apparently, recognized by Oxford. And if it's recognized by Oxford, then by English standards it is a "real" word.
