My iPod Touc started turning off whenever I plug it into the computer or use the charger to charge it. In addition, my computer said "USB port has experienced a power surge" or something along the lines of that when I plugged my iPod in. Any ideas on what's wrong? :(

I think the USB port is experiencing a power surge.

Yeah, I'm sure that helped him a lot. <_<

Have you tried using the USB port with any other devices? If not, try that now, it should help narrow down whether there's really a problem with the power your computer is supplying to the USB port (could be a PSU issue) or if the problem is in your device (probably a battery short).

Well I googled it and a lot of other people are having this problem, but their ipods don't turn off. Several people say it is a problem with the motherboard.

EDIT: One person apparently had their motherboard replaced and it worked fine. But since these cases usually happened when nothing was plugged in it may be a different problem for you.

Not yet, but this cable IS like 6 years old... it came with one of the "original" iPods way back when. One of my friends accidentally took my new cable a few months ago, but he's mailing it back today after I told him about the problem. I'll try it with the new cable. The old cable does look kind of beaten up though...

I'ts prolly the cable. Some wire must've become defected or something. Not sure if opening it up, finding the defect, and soldering it would be worth the time (or if it would work, idk since I've never taken apart a ipod cable).

Yeah, could definitely be a cable problem. If not, it might be a battery short, which would explain why Windows detected it as a "power surge".

Alright, thanks for the help. I'll see how things work out once I get my new cable. :)
