Hi, I've been a visitor to Touch Arcade for some time now, but this is the first time I've posted. I have a bit of a quandary and thought that other iPod Touch fans out there might have some advice. For some time now I have been using an 32gb iPod Touch 3 that I bought new back when it was the current gen to replace my aging Palm Tungsten T5 as my pocket computer. I have found it to be an incredible device for everything I wanted it for, which basically was note taking, messaging, music and gaming on the go. Lately I have been thinking about getting a new iPod Touch for gaming and messaging and just using my 3gen unit for music. My problem is that I can't decide to go with the iPod Touch 4 or hold off for 5. I'd be thankful for any suggestions that would help me make a more informed decision
I think wait for the 5. Since Apple did not upgrade the fourth at all last year, I am guessing there should be a decent upgrade to the touches that will make them more powerful devices this year. The third gen you own does everything you say you do with it as well as the fourth except for gaming, but quite frankly the fourth is only a little better and is already struggling with the newest and greatest of games. And the fourth gen's cameras are not too great either. Unless your 3g is struggling for some unusual reason reason , I'd say you should definitely wait.
Definitely wait for the 5. The 4th has been the newest generation for longer than the other generations (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd were new for 1 year, whereas the 4th has been the latest generation for a year and a half).
The 5th gen no doubt. next year the ipod touch 4 is going to be is going to have a real rough year with gaming. It's hardware is going to be somewhat obsolete since it already should have been replaced. It's basically going to be in the position the ipod touch 3rd gen is now.
Here's a nice website that I use in researching my Apple purchases... http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
I have a 3rd gen touch too, and I agree with the others who have said to wait, as there aren't that many games that the 3rd gen touch can't run at the moment. This will probably change as the year progresses, and stuff like Forgotten Memories and Ravensword 2 come along (hopefully). Even then, the 4th gen touch mightn't be supported by either of these, or other graphically intensive games, as it is underpowered compared to the iPhones and iPads. That being said, I personally am hoping to get an iPad very soon, and my iPod's battery has just about had it, so I can understand why you would want to upgrade.
Definitely wait. The iPod touch 4 is already kind of outdated, and can't quite keep up with newer devices. It can play most games, but a lot of the newer graphic intensive games run like crap. Hopefully Apple announces something soon- they really should've updated it already, unless they plan on killing it off- which seems unlikely (at least in the case of the iPod touch- wouldn't be surprised to see the other iPods disappear).
I got bored of waiting for a newer iPod and splashed out on a Vita, I don't think it looks like Apple are going to bother making a new Touch anytime soon if ever. The 3rd you have now runs games as smooth as any 4th and actually has a little more free ram, so upgrading isn't really a benefit when it comes to gaming so unless you really want a camera or the screen there isn't much point.
I doubt another iPod touch is going to show up at least until the next iPhone does. They only seem to bring them out along with other new devices. I wouldn't bother waiting, it'll be at least next March before it shows up.
yeah I have a 3rd gen 32gb too - and am definitely waiting for the 5th gen. I had planned on upgrading to the 4th gen but didn't when I found out it didn't get the 512mb of ram that the iPhone4 got. I am not sure if I want to upgrade my iPod or get an iPad at this point though. I am leaning towards an iPad because my iPod is still more than capable for my needs (I just wish it had a camera).
