There are no 3rd gen 8gb iPod touches. Apple just re-released the 2cnd gen 8gb at the same time as the upgraded 32gb and 64gb 3rd gen touches. So therefore you have a 2cnd gen. And yes it should work but you won't be able to use multitasking.

It's easier to say it's a 3G because it contains the bootrom from the third generation, as well it was released along side the other third gen devices. Jailbreaks that work on the 2G 8GB that don't work on the 3G 32 and 64, will not work on the 3G 8GB.

So why exactly is there no multitasking support for 2nd Gen devices when Kirikae and Backgrounder have been supporting it for a while already?

So Apple can sell more iDevices by getting people to upgrade.

It was a really clever mode from apple to do so... there was very much confusion about this. I also got spoofed (is that even a word :D)

I bought a brand new 8gb 3rd gen (2nd gen) ipod touch in december 2009, so i have only had the device 6 months, i felt cheated by apple cause i generally thought i was buying a top of the range latest 3rd gen ipod from littlewoods (uk catalouge), only to find out i actually bought a 2nd Gen, now for me to enjoy the full ios 4 i have to upgrade, doesnt seem fair to me at all.

Yes, but I believe the 8GB 3rd Gen is treated the same as a 2nd Gen iPod Touch because its processor, for whatever reason, isn't the same upgrade as the "actual" 3rd Gen iPod Touches.

EDIT: Erm... it looks like we've already covered that. My bad

I've installed iOS 4 on my iTouch 3G / 2G 8GB and it works but:

    - I have flight mode option in Settings
    - No multitasking
    - No homescreen wallpaper (why, a hell, why?)

Do you have iBooks? I can't seem to get it on mine so I'm not sure if its 3rd gen exclusive or just me..

For some reason, on my iOS4, The WiFi signal is says I have 2 out of 3 signal, when my iPod is right next to the WiFi.

Honesty, I have a 2nd Gen iPod touch and the only thing I really care about is the folders. I constantly have more apps than pages and it's a real pain in the ass to figure out what's on those pages. So folders is a HUGE upgrade in my book (don't understand the whole page limit to begin with).

Sure, I'd like multitasking and for the life of me I don't understand why you can't have backgrounds on 2G when you could have them if you jailbroke.

Anyway, I'm still look for the update...please come soon!!! At least on my lunch hour so I can update when I get home.
