Like really hot to where you can't touch it? Or just warm. Mine gets warm when I charge it from having little to no charge, and while I am playing Graphic intense games but not that bad.

Like I said, especially with graphically intense games, it can get pretty warm. But I haven't had a problem yet and I have owned mine for several months now. If it does raise a concern for you though, call Apple, and have em send you a new one ^.^

It's definitely normal. When I played Order & Chaos on the charger a few months back, it would often feel like my iPod would suddenly burst in flames. It literally burned my fingers. I have the latest 32 GB iPod Touch. Using it while it's on the charger, especially with games that push the system, will often result in the iPod heating up but to a lesser degree than the above experience. But yeah, your device will be fine.

Mine doesn't seem to heat that badly even when playing games and charging, it does warm slightly but nowhere close to what you describe.
Then again maybe it's normal for the fourth gens which have a different case and possibly retina could give them more of a work out.

Just remember to minimize the heat. If you overheat the battery life will decrease immensely. Try to find a case that at least gives your ipod a little room to breathe.

Well, seems as if Apple did quite some design errors with the iPhone 4 / iPod 4.
But don't worry! If your device ever gets too got, you'll see the following screen:

and then your iDevice will automatically shut down to protect itself, afaik.
But you can still use the slider to access your phone in case of emergencies.
The same screen applies for the iPod 4th gen, but without the slider. Would be... senseless. ;)

So charge, play, do whatever you like and let the temperature control do the rest.

Mine got really hot the first few days after I got it when I played intensive games as well. Now it only gets that hot when I play the more intensive online multiplayer games. I'd give it a few weeks to see.

Never had an overheating error, but my iPod got really hot one day while charging, just let it cool down for about 15 minutes or so and it should be fine, shut it off too and don't charge it

For people having this issue, the easiest way to reduce heat is to lower the screen brightness in your settings.

It's much easier on the ipod and reduces heat dramatically.
