Actually, ZuneHD will have an app store. MS stated as much, and a vid from a demo unit at a Best Buy store (where they had a sort of marketing push by having a "try ZuneHD" representative at stores) revealed an "apps" icon/folder.

It's not up and running...yet. But MS has gone on record as stating that there will be an app store, it will be tied to XNA dev tools and Windows Mobile Marketplace, and it will allow, eventually, for XBLA crossover...and they hinted at a possible Netflix deal.

False. They both do, and they both kick ass.
    1. Zune HD- has games from the Xbox that are coming over.
    2. Zii Egg- Android. Nuff' Said.

I still think Apple themselves should have waited a year or so to even intro the 3Gs tech. They're still selling the older ARM11+MBX-lite+128MB RAM iPhone3G and 2nd "gen" iPod touch, after all. If they had completely stopped selling those things and concentrated solely on the 3Gs based true next gen updates, then I'd buy one more readily (even though I still wouldn't think it a good move on their part).

The fact is that not many devs will go with 3Gs OpenGL ES 2.0 specific games because it's not only against the 40 million + original generation products (I'm using "generation" here in gamer speak, not Apple speak, the latter of which refers to both true next gen updates and slight model revisions), but also because Apple hasn't stopped selling that generation and so the install base for those devices will only increase.

If you're a dev, what would you concentrate on? The device family with a current install base of 40 million + and growing, or a device family with an install base several tens of millions lower? And even if they concentrate on the latter, to really push the hardware would take a longer dev cycle (up to a year or more). If Apple had waited a year, the prices of 3Gs components would've gone down in a year, ensuring them greater profit margins at launch, and allowing them to accelerate the phase out of the older gens completely.

BTW, someone mentioned dual core this and that. I honestly hope Apple doesn't slip into an arms race with other mobile platform companies. What sells iPhone/touch is the software, not the hardware. Apple could learn to lengthen the life cycles of these devices, thus ensuring greater profits even as MSRP lowers over time, before introducing true next gen updates.

In other words...they could learn a thing or two from the portable game system and video game home console markets, where 5 year life cycles for products are the norm before the introduction of true next gen successors.

    Yeah I know that.
But, they will have an '"App Store", not THE App Store ;).
With the success of Apple's App store, I would not wan't to convert to another device because it's "App Store" probably wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Just take a look at all of these amazing new games coming out.

Oh, and I searched for an iPhone 3GS on eBay, and I found a seller that sells the 32GB iPhone 3GS (brand new) for only £250, which is very good IMO, seeing as you will pay around £500 - £600 for one in most other places.
I am very tempted :( :(

I still think the excitement some have over Android is misplaced.

The marketing for phones and mobile platforms using Android is incredibly lacking, and to the average consumer, underwhelming and confusing.

It's actually a simple fix they could make to get more average consumers interested:

Stop referring to the Android platform in commercials and advertisements as "[device name] w/Google".

When the average consumer hears or reads that, you know what they think?

"So...it has Google? So what? I can use Google on my iPhone/touch, netbook, PC, etc.".

Basically, the mistake is that by not placing the spotlight on Android, by not making a "brand" out of Android, and instead relying and spotlighting the "Google" brand, the average consumer thinks not of a "revolutionary" mobile OS but of the Google search engine.

Say "It's the T-Mobile G1 with Google" to that average consumer and get met with a "meh" and a shrug because they simply think "Google" refers to the search engine. Those ads have got to spotlight the OS. Mention the company behind it, but spotlight the OS. Tell us why Android, from Google, is so "revolutionary" in those ads. Don't just tell us it's "w/Google". It's a branding issue, really.

Actually, I don't see quality as the issue with ZuneHD's proposed app store.

By being C based rather than Objective C based, by being tied to Windows PC in terms of dev kits rather than Macs, by being tied in with the XNA dev platform at that, and by perhaps having Netflix tied in with it in the future, if MS opens it up it will get quite a good deal of dev support. And MS does have internal studios and associate studios that can develop for the platform, an advantage they have over Apple which doesn't really develop games at all (aside from Texas Hold 'em).

That said, the main issue with ZuneHD isn't the platform itself but rather the initial business plans MS has for the product. Initially, it will only be sold in the US. They're still non-committal when it comes to a ZuneHD phone, which is a mistake IMHO as having a dual mobile platform (phone and portable media player) is what gives Apple's iPhone/touch so much strength as a product. And while there are plans for apps, MS, to my knowledge, hasn't made tools available to devs. Not having clear concise plans has always been a problem for MS.

Word to the wise about ebay: If it looks too good to be true, it often is.

    I know from experience :(

Yeah, I understand that the ZuneHD's "App Store" has the potential to be great (although I don't really see it happening), it's just, Apple's App Store has grown so quickly over it's 1 year of existance, and I believe that we will see great things happening soon. We have already seen games such as Real Racing, F.A.S.T, Modern Combat: Sandstorm etc take the App Store by storm, and this is just the beginning. Just take a look at what some of the devs are doing with the 3GS's/3rd gen iPod Touch's power (i.e - N.O.V.A, Ravensword etc). And anyways, I don't want a new, non-Apple device, because I don't like change ;) (sorry, Obama).

... well you must be a very unlucky person. I have found some great bargains on eBay. And if it wasn't for eBay, I probably wouldn't have bought my iPhone and wouldn't be typing this post. Just after the original iPhone was first launched, I found one on eBay for a mere £200. So I bought it, and it was great, no problems whatsoever.

Oh, I'm usually quite lucky on ebay, it's just the one or two times I've been burned have made me much more cautious about deals that seem too good to be true.

I just got mine, I can say that it's awesome, I've tried comparing the speed of My Old Itouch 1G with the 3G and the speed difference is even faster than the 3GS

For those with the new ipod touch get Dark Raider S, Blue Skies 3GS, and Adrenaline Golf. There are a few games out there that take advantage of the new graphics chip other than just drawing faster.
